You have to try their salsa… it is amazing. But I was already sold on their special” the reuben” and the smoke turkey sandwich too. their homemade everything just has so much favor, texture, and balance. It totally brings out the umami taste buds. They are so friendly like great neighbors. I was eyeing the smoked hummus so I have to go back and try it. Yes the pricey are high but seriously they make everything in house almost, how many places have their own smoker? It is worth it for the quality you are getting.

Very over priced!!! Got a turkey sandwich on gluten free bread and it was horrible. The bread was so dry that it crumbled and tore apart when I took the first bite. So it was no longer a sandwich. Turkey didn’t taste anything special. Very disappointed. Especially because I paid $ 16.51 for a turkey sandwich!

Very true, as many stated here, their food is very good and I appreciate the local, organic thing. But the prices are a bit out there.
I used to live *just* around the corner and liked to wander there on my days off for a bite, but even tho I moved only two el stops further west, unfortunately, I won’t ever bother making the small trip, other than maybe some wandering stroll once a summer.
I love me some deli food, but I don’t love me spending $ 14 for a pastrami, nor $ 8 for a children’s PB&J.

City provisions get an A+ for atmosphere and presentation.
But for 14 $ I expected more.
I got a roastbeef sandwhich that came with a pickle, chips, and a root beer.
The sandwhich… ill say the beef itself was darn good but the horseradish sauce they use with the sandwhich doesnt pair well with it, its not tangy enough, that and the fact that it was drenched and dripping down my hands wasnt appealing either.
The Pretzel bun however was nice and tasty!
The chips and pickle… the chips were just meh. not salty or flavorful just kinda there. The pickle also wasnt sour or dill it was actually a bit sweet which with the meh chips and sopping wet sandwhich just didnt satisfy me.
They do offer 10% off for locals which is cool and i may try them again but for what i paid just didnt cure my sammich itch.
Im actually contemplating jimmy johns right now…

They earned the final star! Why, you ask, because the wait is still long?
Oh, but the food is SOOOO GOOD. And while you wait, HAVE A DRAUGHT BEER THAT CLEETUS HELPED CREATE. The Slackjawed Dunkel is icing on the cake.

The concept gets an A+++ but the execution fails. I’ve been here a few times and each visit left me disappointed and confused. When you walk in someone immediately asks if you’re dining-in…do they actually have table service? Am I allowed to just peruse the grocery section? And where, specifically, am I supposed to stand in line and order? I have 3 different people asking what I want but they’re all standing in different sections of the store. On top of that someone always cuts in front of me. It’s always a clusterf*** even when it’s not crowded.
The food, for all of its rarity, is actually not that tasty. Lunch for 2 costs at least $ 25. This place wishes it was Zingerman’s in Ann Arbor (it has the audacity to charge the same prices but it doesn’t even come close!).
And FYI: You can find local, organic produce and products for much cheaper at the farmer’s market.

I was torn between 2 and 3 stars, so it’s probably more a 2.5 stars in the end. It is a cute little shop with lots of new and local food products. However, I just didn’t think the quality and taste of the sandwich I got was worth how much I paid.
I got the Siracha egg salad sandwich on brioche, and I’m pretty sure they left off the siracha sauce, which by the time I brought it home I wasn’t about to go back for some. So the sandwich was really dry and didn’t have a lot of flavor besides eating a giant hard boiled egg. I also got one of the oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, and it was okay, just a little hard and crunchy.
The price was just a little steep for something I could make at home. Maybe I just ordered the wrong sandwich? I’m all for small restaurants trying to make it, but I just don’t think I’ll come here again if I’m wanting a quick sandwich.

Great place to sit and relax and enjoy a coffee and a sandwich on a weekend afternoon. The turkey club is amazing and so are the strata.
They have an excellent beer and whiskey selection and tons of local products like Bill Kim’s sauces. I was so happy to see the Belly Fire sauce when I walked in today… yum. They also sell spices from The Spice House. When you check out do not pass up the caramels for 50 cents… they are soooo good. Just a really laid back place with friendly people. If I lived in this neighborhood I would probably come here too much.

My friends and I popped into City Provisions today to drown our sorrows after a disappointing Cubs loss. A fine-​looking selection of gourmet «provisions» is on display here. Although I did not purchase a pile of goods to go like my friends, we all enjoyed a sandwich and a brew at one of the wooden tables. There is also some outdoor seating along Wilson. My smoked turkey focaccia sandwich with gouda and lettuce was very good with tasty potato chips and pickle wedge. It’s relatively pricey because everything is either made in-​house or locally produced. The sample sip of malted milk stout from the staff was greatly appreciated, and two of my buds did wind up buying a glass.

Oh, this is a dangerous place. Shelves lined with organic and locally sourced sauces. Artisan cheeses. Cooler full of craft brews. Rotating selection of small batch beer collaborations on tap. Deli case filled with innovative, tasty salads. Yep, if one were not vigilant, a whole paycheck could disappear quite quickly in this joint.
But it’s all so good…
I’ve stopped in a few times. Drawn by the beer. I mentioned the beer right? Oh, the beer… Sigh… The proprietor, Cleetus Friedman, teams up with the regional microbreweries to create some truly amazing beers. The most recent release is a malted-​milk stout, brewed with New Holland Brewery in Holland, Michigan. Well, I do enjoy a good milk stout, so I used that as my excuse to finally get over to try the Sunday brunch.
Alas, they were out of the milk stout. Disappointment, to be sure, but the excellent food did much to soften the blow. The menu is small, but the offerings are inspired. They were feeding the vegetarians a beet and potato hash on that Sunday, so that was what I ate. And I was quite content. It had great flavors and textures and came with a side of apples that had me dancing in my chair. Yes, apples. I don’t know what they did to them, but those apples were the culinary high point of my week. The hubby was pretty happy with his crab Benedict and blown away by his side of bacon. I have no appreciation for the finer points of bacon, but I will trust his assessment that this was some fine bacon indeed.
When we finished our meal we ordered some beer for dessert. Sasparilla Six Stout, brewed with Dark Horse Brewing Company in Marshall, Michigan, was standing in for the milk stout — which will be back on tap on Tuesday. Oh, what a delicious, inky black concoction of saparilla, vanilla bean and malty goodness! I seriously love this beer. I was told that this is the last of it, but I do hope it makes a return appearance at some future date.
Yes, it most certainly is pricey. No getting around that. Much as I’d like it to be, brunch here cannot become a habit. However, one can be frugal here if one tries. A cup of soup is only $ 2.95, and quite tasty and filling. They try to always have a vegetarian soup offering. Which is good, because I’m going to have to come back soon to try that milk stout.

Hot damn! Crazy good.

Brunch review:
Went to their new brunch to try the lox and bagel sandwich. It comes with smoked whitefish spread too… it’s very good!
On the downside, this is definitely the most expensive brunch I’ve ever had. The fresh, local ingredients are apparently super expensive! Their menu is fairly small and my fiancé would not want to go back — not enough choices he liked.

Fabulous fresh food that’s local. They even have a map with pins showing where the food comes from. The pastrami sandwich is amazing.
I the lack of a star will echo other Unilocalers’ sentiments: The Prices. They’re steep. Like really steep. A sandwich will set you back about ~$ 12. There’s a deli near my office that sells $ 10 sandwiches. Their sandwiches are so big you can’t finish them in one sitting. I was still hungry after cleaning my plate clean.

It took me a while to check out City Provisions, despite it being literally a 3 minute walk from my apartment. I was a bit intimidated. A place like this, where they stock locally produced food items, you would think the people working there would be snooty and pretentious. That wasn’t the case. I was greeted with a smile from just about everyone there. And I have to say, what a great place to grab lunch!
I ordered the smoked turkey sandwich, and it was excellent, piled on tomato foccacia with smoked gouda, lettuce and mayo. It came with home made chips, which were really good. I browsed a little while I waited for the sandwich. They have a nice selection of local wine and beer and pop (including Reed’s Ginger Brew, one of my favorites), deli meats, artisan cheese, side items like dips and chips, snacks, and a lot more that I’m likely forgetting.
The price was somewhat on the high end. $ 12 total for the sandwich and chips, but it’s worth it if you love high quality ingredients and you’re into supporting local businesses.

Stopped by here on a Sunday afternoon and had a pretty darn good brunch. I went with the Steak & Eggs (their special for the day) and the wifey got the House Smoked Ham sandwich. The Steak & Eggs featured a very flavorful and tender cut of Dietzler Farms beef, a lightly dressed microgreens salad, and a fantastic Sweet Potato Biscuit. The biscuit was not of the heavy butter-​laden variety (not that there’s anything wrong with that), but rather it was light and delicate, and a perfect addition to the dish. I was fortunate enough to try a bite of my wife’s ham sammich and I can easily say it’s the best ham sandwich I’ve ever had. Now I’ve enjoyed many a ham sandwich in my lifetime, but I’ve never found myself thinking about that wonderful smoky, savory flavor of that ham on the next day and wishing there were left overs.
If you’re looking to take some goods home they have a great deli case, as well as some locally distilled spirits. Oh, and they sell rendered duck and pork fat, too! This might not the cheapest place to grab a bite, but definitely some very delicious eats and the focus on high quality, local and sustainable ingredients is a big plus.

I’ll be back here again. Good stock, great ingredients, friendly people, not overtly expensive. Locally sourced items, donuts on Sunday is better than County Line Orchard. The donut is large and expensive, however, next time, I would share it with someone. It’s also not as sweet as others, which is a big plus in my mouth.
I also tried the goat milk latte. YUM. I love goat cheese, and this was perfect on a dreary Sunday morning. Also a plus is that everyone was friendly.
Most of the items they sell seem pretty reasonable. You won’t get discounts but you aren’t paying arm and leg for bitters or honey or some North Shore Gin.
The outside doesn’t really represent what’s inside and is very disjointed from the comfy interior. I wish they would do something about it, but at the same time, maybe it keeps the locals not be overwhelmed by hipsters.

Best pastrami i have ever had. Really like this place. The staff is super nice cleetus the owner actually cares and involves himself in the experience and seriously the sides and the cheeses are fucking great!
A little pricey for the area but you get what you pay for here…
FYI a great way to eat there is get two or three slices of each meat and a few cheeses and go at it

I finally checked this place out last night after having it bookmarked for a few weeks. It’s unusual for me to wait that long to try a place I’ve had my eye on as I am a big believer in instant gratification.
City Provisions has it all: a coffee bar (I sipped on a rich sea salt and Callebaut chocolate mocha while I looked around), prepared foods, condiments, pastries, dairy items, ice cream, fresh meats and chicken, a nice selection of beer, wine, and liquor, and farm-​to-​table dinners.
Everything is locally-​sourced, farm-​raised and organic, so naturally that’s reflected in the prices. While I was happy to pay $ 7.25 for a giant bottle of Scrumpy’s cider, I flinched a bit at paying $ 4.95 for a tiny serving of sour cherry sorbet.
The staff was genuinely friendly and quite knowledgeable about their products. They’re happy to be working there and it shows.
I will definitely be back to try some more of their unique offerings.

A great sandwich can be so simple but so elusive. All it requires is a handful of quality ingredients combined in perfect proportion; yet the feat is so rarely achieved with true excellence. Other establishments which aspire to greatness should take the master class from City Provisions. Pastrami with spicy mustard on rye? Yes. Roast beef with horseradish mayo on pretzel roll? Yes. Old Bay shrimp salad with lettuce on brioche? Yes! Smoked turkey with rosemary mayo on focaccia? YES OH YES MY DEAR SWEET JESUS LORD PLEASE TAKE ME YES YES YES!
Whew, excuse me for getting carried away. They’re all wonderful, but I assure you without exaggeration that the latter is one of the three best turkey sandwiches ever to pass my lips. I nearly wept at its beauty.
My tuna-​salad-​loving girlfriend gives their version a big thumbs-​up. The house-​made chips which come free with the sandwiches are nothing special (and can be ridiculously greasy), but the rosemary potato salad is a standout. I don’t care for the currants in the quinoa salad, but otherwise that stuff is pretty good too. The chocolate-​chip cookie is one of the dry types, but will still crack my top ten – it is that good.
I must give especial praise to the beet salad. I am a connoisseur of the beta vulgaris in all its possible preparations both lofty and low, and I must state – again with no hyperbole – that City Provisions wins the all-​time gold medal for beet salad (deli category). Carmelized onions, sunflower seeds, just a touch of some kind of delicious dressing, and big, beautiful chunks of red and yellow beets.
They have seemed to work out some of their early supply kinks, although service in general is friendly and helpful but slow. They always seem to have a battalion of employees flitting about behind the counter, yet it still takes ten minutes to prepare a couple of items.
But you know what? I’d wait thirty minutes for standard-​bearing sandwiches, superlative beet salad, and superior chocolate-​chip cookies. I will become a regular for certain.

Quick! The great flood is coming! We need to stock up on provisions to ride out the storm. Oh what a world, what a world…
