El Popo… long story short: our family comes together and makes Tamales once a year. This is where we always come for our masa. This year, I noticed they did a complete remodel in the front of the store and it looks GREAT! Very clean and organized. Plenty of room for the crowds of people coming to puchase their masa for making their own tamales. You purchase their masa by the pound(CASHONLY) and if you like fresh tortillas, you should also grab a package or two of their homemade tortillas. They are quite yummy. Speaking Espanol is a plus, but their employees also speak English for the gringo in you. There is also premade masa ready to roll in ohas and with your ingredient of choice sold in containers in the coolers next to the counter and some other snacks, such as homemade popcorn and cinnamon tortillas. A little something different you don’t find at Jewel or Dominick’s. This is one of a kind and our family’s favorite place to get our masa for TAMALEDAY every year.

El Popo! We love you!!! Well, I have no basis for comparison because we only come to YOU for masa and fresh tortillas. We make tamales from scratch as a family once a year(sometimes more often… shhh. Don’t tell.) Dad picks me up in the burbs and we drive out to pick up forty pounds of masa and as many tortillas as we can handle. It’s easy to find. There are trucks parked around the corner with the name on them. Someone sits right outside the entrance with their shopping cart. Don’t let that stop you from going in. Just smile and say good morning. Once inside, there’s really no where to go. Order your masa at $.50 per pound and go. Cash only. English speaking folks like myself can mumble through, but speaking Spanish would be very helpful!
