The store’s selection features items of varying styles and prices. And the selection changes weekly!

History

Established in 2005.

ENJOY, AN URBAN GENERAL STORE was opened in July 2005 as a specialty retail gift store. The concept of an urban general store is a nod to general stores of the past but updated to meet the needs of today’s modern shopper. The store carries a wide variety of fun, functional, inspirational and well-​designed items so that all your gift buying can be accomplished in one store.

Rebecca W.

Business Owner

Rebecca Wood is the founder of Urban General Store. Raised in a retail family, Rebecca helped out in her grandmother’s jewelry store as soon as she could walk. From elementary school through college, Rebecca worked in her parents’ gift stores, learning every aspect of the business. After college, Rebecca worked as a manufacturer’s representative, selling to small gift stores throughout Southeast Massachusetts, Cape Cod, and Rhode Island.

Rebecca first visited Chicago’s Lincoln Square neighborhood when she relocated to the city in 2002. Rebecca realized that the neighborhood would be the perfect place to fulfill her life-​long dream of opening a modern-​day general store. Like the rural general stores she recalled from her youth spent traveling to visit her grandmother in Vermont, Rebecca sought to update the concept to one focused on gifts and fun items that cater to smart and savvy city dwellers. In July 2005 Rebecca opened ENJOY, AN URBAN GENERAL STORE.

Love this store! I can always find a fun gift for a bday. I like that they have Chicago magnets, glasses, wallets, etc. I’ve picked up cute handmade earrings and dammit dolls!

One of the best gift shops in Chicago! This store has presents for all ages and all tastes, mostly affordable quirky items, as well as toys, Chicago souvenirs, and nice accessories (hats, scarves, gloves etc) and jewellery. I managed to find numerous Christmas gifts for family and did not break the bank.

RUDE! That’s all I can say about their customer service, even though the store is well laid out, and carries novelty items you would love to give as gifts. I was strolling through The Square after dinner with a friend, and the door to Enjoy was wide open. There were about 15 customers inside the store, on Friday, 8⁄28. So my friend and I walked in.
NO sooner are we looking at kitchen items, that a cashier yells out, «We are sorry guys, but the store is closed.» «You need to leave.»
Now, granted, when I looked at my watch it was 7:06 p.m., BUT the glass door to the store was WIDE open, and nowhere did I see a visible sign with store hours proclaiming that we were to assume they were closed. There were some people still milling about, and others were waiting in line to be rung up. What attracted me to go in in the first place, was a canvas tote on display in the window that said «I remembered my grocery bag.» I thought it was perfect as a gift for my mother, given the recent ban on plastic bags in the city of Chicago.
We ended up walking out and I will look for the bag online or in other stores, and will now buy one for every female friend I have, out of spite to Enjoy. It was not the fact that the store was closing for the day, it was the way it was said. And besides, stores in The Mag Mile, or the shops at Armitage and Halsted ALWAYS have a person standing by the door near closing time, who is politely letting you know their doors are locked. I own in the neighborhood and while real estate prices are high, this is still NOT Lincoln Park, so the attitude has to stop. I, for one, will NOT be spending any more money at Enjoy, and will not recommend it to anyone with me that wishes to peruse its aisles. There are other stores in the city that carry similar items who know how to treat their guests.

I was in enjoy today buying a card and was very disappointed in the customer service of the girl that rang me up. She was unfriendly, dismissive and rude. I have gone into this store many times for their great selection of cards and I make it a priority to shop at independent, local stores but I think I will take my business elsewhere after today. I worked in retail for many years and greeting someone, eye contact, a smile and saying thank you and have a nice day go a long way. This employee would be wise to remember that.

Yes, they definitely have some very general merchandise in this store. I’m talking sunglasses, jewelry, kitchen tools, mugs, cups and glasses with goofy sayings, baby apparel, and novelties like the ever popular bacon bandages. They have wall art and some kitschy cool shopping bags. They have a really nice selection of cards for all occasions. I don’t think I’d come and shop here on a regular basis, but I think this is the perfect place to run in and get that small, last minute gift. Heck, you can pick up the card, too.

Enjoy has something for everyone, I think. From candles that smell like your favorite cocktails (Sazerac, Mint Julep, etc), to horse head masks and crazy cat lady action figures, you’re sure to find something you most definitely don’t need but will buy anyway because… crazy cat lady action figure.
This is a great stop for unique gifts, fun socks, cards, kids stuff and especially white elephant gifts. Where else are you going to find a Christmas ornament of a pink and purple unicorn dressed in lederhosen? You know your tree NEEDS this to be complete.
Prices seemed decent, there’s a good amount of parking nearby and it’s only a block or so off the Brown line.

I like this store because it’s impossible to walk out without finding something silly or sweet or funky to buy for yourself or someone you love. Today, I found some funny greeting cards, a ridiculously adorable wooden whale tape dispenser (awwwww, yeah!), and a sentence-​a-​day diary of happiness. My life is going to be SO awesome now.
All kidding aside, I think this is one of the primary reasons to visit Lincoln Square and you should pop in if you’re ever in the ‘hood. Love it!

This is literally one of my favorite stores in Lincoln Square. I love collecting random things, and this store has a great selection. From awesome unique greeting cards for every occasion possible to toys, games, clothing, candies, jewelry, accessories, buttons, home décor, mugs, and wallets, it’s a cute store to stop by to check out their items. I found a bacon watch and a pink spiky mini backpack that I thought was pretty neat. The store itself is very cute and very bright and cheery; check them out!

This store to rename itself to «Enjoy, An Adorable General Store». I mostly try to avoid it, because I would find something to buy every. single. time. I came to browse. Nothing that I need, but a cute mug that would make office life more fun, or a cute card for someone’s birthday or 4 cards for an upcoming anniversary (seriously, doesn’t everyone have a card buying problem?).
It is perfect when you are in a pinch and need a gift. They have things for ladies and gents — jewelry and fun Chicago-​themed things and beer journal and candles and teas — a perfect hodge-​podge of loveliness. Plus, their card selection may not be chain store huge, but they are the fine quality, darling print kind — SO much better to opt for these, I think.
I’m so glad this is in the neighborhood. One of my favorites in Giddings Plaza.

Enjoy, Urban General Store is full of creative knick knacks perfect for gifting — I want to buy everything in the store for my friends and family, coworkers, neighbors, myself. Not just because it was the holiday season when I visited!
It’s a small little shop in Lincoln square. Of course, crowded on Christmas Eve because this is the place for stocking stuffers.
There’s a great children’s section in the back. For my friend’s two year old, I purchased tiny gloves with each finger numbered. Practical and educational!
If you ever find yourself on Lincoln Avenue, you should take a stroll to Enjoy!

What a «statement» general store! Need somethin fun and unique that you wouldn’t find on the shelves of your big box store? Hard to please friend that says you didn’t pick up a last minute gift at the drug store? Whether you or that «friend» is younger or older. you can find desk stuff, art pieces, functional home goods, jewelry, and funky things like sock puppets. I know, I got you at sock puppets! Oh and funny shaped ice to spice up your life! Another fabulous reason to stop in!
You can’t get to Lincoln Square? They’ve got their goods available for sale online. It doesn’t take the place of teetering around in this cute store, but it’ll do if you just can’t get here. It sort of reminds you of that popular online store catered to the creative-​types. But, I’ve found my new go-​to for unique finds in one stop for those in my life I want cheer up or thank! Thanks E!

This is a cute little shop with an interesting selection of cute goods for your home novelties you can purchase as good gifts. For bacon lovers, they have bacon covered frosting in addition to other bacon flavored items.
I was save 5% on two mugs by checking into the store on Unilocal so for those looking to save a buck, check in before you check out.

Ridiculous little store filled with ridiculous little things. Fun to peruse, find little gifts, cards, and novelties.
I walked around for about thirty minutes and left with an adorable necklace, a box of thank you cards and a birthday card. I spend about $ 65 on everything including tax.
Oh, and if you want anything having to do with mustaches or monkeys… this is the place for you.
