Formally Modern Tuxedo

Rented a tux to stand up in a wedding… Formally modern screwed up the order and rented some of the grooms men a vest, and not to others… Caused a little bit of panic as some of the groomsmen noticed the others had vests… Needless to say, none of us wore them. The tie that they rented me (of course not adjustable) was only about a FOOT too short (one size fits 5’2″ guys only), and finally just to make it even more fun the adjustable pants lived up to their name and the fasteners on the sides wouldn’t hold, so the pants would get larger as you moved. Of the six groomsmen two of us had to find a bunch of safety pins to keep our pants on. Although I will say this made for one of the more interesting pictures as a bridesmaid was on her knees trying to pin one of the grooms mans pants on.
On the positive side — the tux’s did all look the same, they were the right sizes (other than the pants falling off), and they charged what they said they would…

We went here to get a tux for our wedding and set up tuxes for the groomsmen to rent. Initially intended to rent but ended up buying one so the fit could be perfect.
Service: No problems here. Everyone was helpful, even when we were vacillating between different colors and styles for our groomsmen. We tried on things for over an hour until we found something that fit our style. Donnie was our main point of contact and he was great. The fitting was spot on and quick.
Tuxes: All the rental tuxes were wool instead of the polyester usually found in rentals. They were clean and looked sharp. People sent in their measurements and no one had any issues. The rental included white shirt, black shoes, studs, and tie, cummerbund or vest. The cost was comparable to other quality rental companies.
Location: the location is great. If you live downtown and drive, it can take a while to get to in traffic since it is off a major thoroughfare. The shop is a decent size and has a good selection of tuxes, suits, ties, and other menswear items. There is free parking.
Definitely will recommend this place based on our experience.

I’m not a Unilocal person, and I’ve always been of the opinion that the negative comments speak louder than the positive ones. I’m here to change that, and you really should listen to what I have to say before you buy your next custom suit. If you’re lazy like me here’s the skinny: their people are fantastic, their service is every bit as good as you would expect, and their product is impeccable at a price you won’t be able beat unless you’re related to a tailor. For the rest of you, here’s the long version:
The doors on a Mercedes Benz close with a satisfying vault-​like thunk. They always have, and that sound and the feeling it produces are an unmistakable trademark of the Mercedes brand. When Donnie at Formally Modern draped a custom suit jacket over my shoulders he asked me «so how does it feel?» I replied, «like you just closed the door of a Mercedes S-​Class.» That is the level of quality and craftsmanship that I have come to expect from this company.
For the record. I’m a 5’11″ 210 pound power lifter. I can’t wear off-​the-​rack anything because nobody makes clothes that fit or flatter my figure, especially in formal wear. I either look like a brick wall, or a kid trying to wear his dad’s big-​boy clothes. I don’t even own a pair of jeans, and the part of my wardrobe that isn’t custom is composed of sweat pants and gym clothes. I have an impossible body type and have been on quest my entire adult life to find a tailor that can make me a suite that not only looks good on me but that also won’t have me rattling empty McDonald’s cups at tourists on Michigan Avenue.
Guys, this is it. Take it from someone who has spent a literal fortune on custom clothing, you won’t find a better deal. I’ve had custom suits made by some of Chicago’s best tailors. Don’t get me wrong, they look great, and they fit great, but they max out my credit cards and I just can’t afford to have a wardrobe like that.
When Donnie showed me their price list I was equally shocked and skeptical. I had been paying 2 – 3 times what they charge for my suits, and I was totally BLOWN AWAY when my first order came in. Granted, these guys aren’t going to give you a glass of scotch when you walk in the door, tell you that you could be model, and rub your tummy because you’ve had a bad day. What they will do is give you a top-​shelf custom suit at a more than a fair price. Like I said, their people are fantastic, their service is great, and their product is impeccable. Don’t waste your time anywhere else.

This place deserves 5 stars simply for their outstanding service. I was asked to a black tie wedding last minute and needed a tux fast! I had my fitting at a different location but needed to pick my rental up in the city. These guys assisted me right away and made sure I was comfortable with my selected options for the final fitting. When I expressed interest in a more slim fit pant, Tom delivered. The new pants were great but too long for me; Tom told me not to worry and hemmed them on the spot! My date loved my tux but preferred a different shirt style/​tie option. So, I made one more trip to this location. Tom and his staff swapped out these out for me without hesitation. This wedding was sprung on me last minute and could have been a disaster if not for these guys. I’ll be a returning customer.

Thanks to these guys (and ladies), my groomsmen and I looked fly on the big day! Everyone at this location, especially Amina, went above and beyond to make our big day, even bigger. Amina helped us pick out a new style tux to meet my bride’s demands. This new and unique look meant the availability was limited. Amina put our fears to rest and the staff helped ensure that my groomsmen (from across the country) had their measurements in on time… and even helped us ship the tuxedos to North Carolina for the wedding. Amina even tracked down a tailor in Kitty Hawk North Carolina just in case we needed a hand! The tuxedos fit great, the tuxedos arrived on time in the Outer Banks, and we had a great wedding. I cannot even count the number of times people stopped and commented on our tuxes. Even if your wedding isn’t in Chicago… or your groomsmen aren’t in Chicago, don’t count these guys out. They were awesome. Thanks again for making this entire process painless!

I am so elated to have this place close by! They have the absolute best staff. Great customer service, and plenty of individual attention.
They have been my lifeline when it come to picking out things for my husband! I usually buy all of his casual clothes, but he takes care of his suits, sport coats, etc. However, we had a few events pop-​up unexpectedly and I had to get outfits for him ASAP! I remembered they had his measurements at FM, and I stopped in. They were absolutely incredible!!! They even found a tailor to do a same day alteration… And marked the pant leg for me.
These guys are class acts… major attention to detail, friendly, and genuine gentlemen. It is great not having to go to River North or Gold Coast for great products and service :)

Can’t even explain how happy I was with this place. Everyone’s tux’s fit perfectly! On time and tux tracker worked great. Turns out a very good friend of mine who was at the wedding was wearing a suit made at formally modern and he looked awesome. The staff is on point and very knowledge.

If we’re not counting T-​shirts I’ve worn tuxes a grand total of zero times in my entire life so to say I’m a novice would be pretty generous. I guess when your brother is getting married you gotta do whatever the boss says though so we hit up Formally Mondern for some fittings the other day.
I was shocked at how many styles they had and the woman who helped us had a whole lot of patience. Overall it was a pretty painless experience. Even though guys don’t seem to have half as much fun as women when trying on wedding stuff I’d say this place will get you in and out fast and with some pretty sweet discounts on rentals.
They also have some comfy chairs and a TV to watch while you’re waiting for whoever you’re with to try their stuff on. Now all we need to do is convince the bride to let us wear Chuck Taylors. #notgonnahappen

Nothing more to say than the best. Donnie and his staff really know how to style a guy. All of the items I have rented fit perfectly. And don’t get me started with the custom services they provided. They have made several shirts and pants for me and my husband and we keep on going back for more. The price point and quality is the best we have seen. Lastly, huge fan of the casual shirts and jeans he has in stock. If you are looking for a nice blazer or cool shirt for a night out with friends, make sure to stop by and check his inventory.

This place is a hidden gem.
I have been going here for a couple of years whenever I need a suit for a special occasion or most recently for a Tuxedo for my own wedding this coming May. My review is specifically for the retail side of the business as I expect to follow-​up with a stellar review of the Tuxedo rentals in May when my wedding takes place.
If you appreciate fine quality, upscale brands and pieces that are designed for a more tailored look — then this is your place. I am about 5’9 /​130 lbs so it’s hard to find NICE suits and dress shirts that fit my slim body ‘off the rack’. They carry J. Lindbergs, Hugo Boss, John Varvatos, and many others but everything seems to be hand selected.
Donnie, who I have worked with on many occasions is simply the best. He gives his honest advice and works hard to ensure his customer’s are satisfied. He has taken care of me and in return I find any opportunities possible to give him my business when I’m in the market for a nice suit, pair of shoes, or jeans!
Go here if you value your appearance without the pretentiousness you’ll get at other places around the city.

I had just about lost hope in my search for a proper tuxedo for my wedding. With my time constraints, I didn’t think I could do anything other than a terrible rental from the usual suspects, a cheap, stiff, ill-​fitting tux off the rack somewhere or shelling out thousands for one of the higher-​end brands. Luckily, I found Donnie at Formally Modern Tuxedo in Chicago, and he gave me an outstanding alternative.
I could get the perfect fit, style, wool and construction by going custom. I didn’t think there was any way four weeks would be enough time, or that I could afford such an apparent luxury, but I decided to hear him out. It was quickly apparent that Donnie seriously knows his stuff. He can tell you styles and trends in an instant while explaining the precise differences between different materials and cuts. Need a slightly modern look in the right color with enough classic cut to still look good in 10 years? He knows exactly what’ll get you there or anywhere else. Of course, as the measurements are taken precisely for your body and even the shirt is custom, there’s no need to worry about finding the right fit. Once we had finished looking through all the options and taking the measurements, I was quite convinced and a bit excited, but I still wondered what the hit to my wallet would be.
It turned-​out, I could get my first-​class, all-​custom tux for about the price of a mid-​range off-​the-​rack. I was floored and decided to go for it. When the tux came in a few weeks later (right on time) I couldn’t believe the quality of the work. This tuxedo can outclass high-​end options that costs two or three times as much. With high-​quality wool and cotton as well as a perfect fit, the comfort and the look are as good as it gets. That’s before you start to find the really nice touches like the boutonnière hook and the fully-​studded shirt. From here on out, I’ll be getting any business or formalwear I need from FMT on Clybourn.

After searching repeatedly for the best fitting tuxes, my best man found Formally Modern Tuxedo. Not only was it more affordable then other competing tux rental places, but everyone in my wedding party was very happy and looked great! Thanks!

I chose Formally Modern Tuxedo for my wedding this past weekend, which was out of town in MI. I had groomsmen all over the Chicago area and one in Austin, TX. The suits were great, the fitting was nearly exact for all groomsmen (after the initial sizings) and the customer service was exceptional! Special thanks to Donnie and Alex! Highly recommended folks.

So I’m going to a black tie wedding on Saturday and don’t own a tux. I went in on Tuesday for measurements and a quick explanation of tuxes available. Tux rental was $ 169+tax and includes full tux, shoes, cuff links, bow tie, choice of vest or cummerbund. Seems kind of expensive, but I may be wrong. I spent about 40 minutes total and will pick my tux up on Thursday. Convenient location on Clybourn.
I dropped the tux off on Monday.

This place is very professional and clean. Prices are reasonable and customer service is definitely 5 star… Alex helped us as soon as we walked in and made sure everything was complete detail by detail… I’ll definitely recommend this place to anyone

We stopped at Men’s Wearhouse to look at tuxes and then came here directly afterward (thankfully). Formally Modern has a better selection, better service, and lower prices.
If you need to rent or buy a tuxedo, this is your spot.

Formally modern is the best! Kyle came through big time. One of my groomsmen’s flight was delayed… Kyle brought the tux to the rehearsal dinner. That’s true customer service. Thanks again to Ky;e and the team at Formally Modern Tuxedo! You’re tops in my book.

We rented tuxedos from Formally Modern Tuxedo for our April 2013 wedding and we had a great experience. We had 6 rentals (4 groomsmen, 2 fathers) so the groom’s tux was free. The other tuxes were very reasonably priced, especially compared to Men’s Warehouse. My husband really wanted a shawl collar tux, and FMT carries a very-​high quality tux in this style. All the tuxes were in the store on the Thursday before the wedding, and everyone was able to try the tuxes on and address any issues (which turned out to be minimal) at that time. My husband has since rented tuxes from other establishments (only because he had to), but he’s always paid more than FMT prices for lesser quality tuxes.

Whether you need a tux or a new pair of jeans, Donnie’s place is 100% on point. I can’t speak for the rental side of the business but I will tell you that this is a place where you’re more likely going to walk out of looking GQ, rather than like you’re going to a cheesy prom or early 90’s wedding.
It’s my opinion that you should always buy, but if your wallet doesn’t extend that far, try purchasing the shirt, tie, shoes and cufflinks to go with whatever they fit you in best.
Free parking too is the icing on the cake!
