Fuji Sushi Buffet

I was very disappointed to see that they have closed :(I really enjoed their food. I wonder why they closed though.

This place is closed. they’ve had a «closed for remodeling» sign in the window for three weeks and nobody answered the phone. I tried calling tonight and the phone was disconnected.

Well, went to this palce last night and it is closed. So much for the sushi buffet concept

A staggeringly large collection of dishes at this buffet that tries to be all things to all men but only does some of them right. I would actually rather go to a place with smaller selection of well prepared dishes. A lot of the chicken, pork, vegetable offerings were pretty good. The appetizers were hit and miss. Dumplings seemed to be frozen and then overcooked. Decent sushi, and freshly made too. Very good assortment of soups. And the strawberry ice cream to finish off was a nice touch. Look for discount coupons in the Chicago Reader.

This is one of the first places I have ever been at that fails on all levels. I wish I could say there were a few redeeming qualities about the food or atmosphere, but this was one of the worst meals I have ever had in my life. Me and my finacee tried dish and nothing made us want to go back for seconds, our stomachs felt queasy with each bite, and if not for the free refills on soda I wouldn’t have made it through half of my dishes.
Food — When I go to a buffet I don’t expect the highest quality of food, I expect something decent that I won’t mind having 3 plates of. If there’s a few dishes that stand out, all the better. However, everything I hate at this buffet was flavorless and mushy/​dry. Stay away from the oysters and mussels with a ten foot pole. The sushi is all right for a buffet, but the saran wrap over half-​empty trays makes it unappealing. I never thought something raw could taste stale. The hot dishes are no better. You know a place is bad when they don’t even have a decent egg roll, or if the egg roll smells like rotten cabbage. I didn’t even touch the hot wings because they looked green (not because of the seasoning). The only part of the buffet I somewhat enjoyed was the chocolate pudding, which was probably just JELLO brand.
Price — We went on a Friday night and it was $ 16.95 per person. That is perfectly normal for a sushi buffet, but the quality of their food doesn’t come close to meriting what they charge. I never thought I would walk away from a buffet hungry. For 3 dollars more you can go to a Sushi Para restaurant with better service, quality, options, and BYOB.
Overall — I saw this place was closed late last year for health code violations. It makes me wonder how bad it was prior to their re-​opening because this place must represent the absolute minimum quality a restaurant needs to operate in Chicago.
Avoid this place at all costs!

Pros: The service. the strawberry dessert cake thingy and the water.
Cons: Everything else.
My cousin wanted to go here so I obliged. Yes, I know it’s a buffet so I shouldn’t have high expectations, but Jesus H. Christ, this place is terrible.
The décor is decent. But if a restaurant is called Fuji Sushi Buffet, why is there a mural of the Great Wall of China on the side wall?
The bathroom didn’t smell like ass or barf so i guess that’s a plus.
Now, the food, overall it was god awful. Everything tasted as if it was out for 5 hours. The sushi was chewy. Even the fried stuff was hard. If i bit any harder my teeth would have snapped apart.
This place needs an overhaul badly. Like restaurant impossible bad.
If i compared this place to a woman, i wouldn’t bump uglies with this woman with another dong. I would touch myself for lightyears before eating there willingly again.
Lastly, If I served this food to the poor, they would be offended.

This is almost EXACTLY the same place it was a year ago when it went under the name «New China Buffet.» Nothing has changed except the price. $ 16.95 for dinner here is way too much.
It might improve matters if the place had enough customers to keep the food from getting gummy and gloppy and dried out but that’s not the case. I won’t be back.

Fuji lost it’s pizazz. Sure, I found things I liked and ate but overall I wasn’t as wowwed as the first time. Perhaps it is spending the pricey amount and not getting any steamed crab legs because some greedy Gretchen takes them out as soon as the bin is refilled. I know it it isn’t Fuji’s fault that thoughtless jerks dine there but they could have refilled the bins more often. The sushi was still decent but way too much rice. The chocolate pudding was rancid — how can they mess up pudding that comes out of a can?

Formerly New China Buffet, Fuji Buffet seems to have had a shift in management and a small swap in menu. I have rarely seen sushi buffets done well and I think California is the only sushi buffet that I’ve seen where everything was fresh and the rice was correct in form, texture, and taste. Is Fuji Buffet as good as a sushi restaurant say in Boystown? No. Is Fuji Buffet as bad as 7-​Eleven sushi? I emphatically say no.
Gone are the french fries and chicken nuggets that populated the former New China Buffet. There is a lot more sushi rolls and they are edible but they are not as good as a specialized sushi restaurant. I really like that they added some dim sum dishes at Fuji so you can find shrimp dumpling/​hargow and some pork dumpking/​shumai however the shumai is quite awful while the hargow passes.
If you’d like dessert there are cookies and cakes and fruit and if you’re willing to dig in the freezer ice cream. Fuji is about $ 20 a head and might be worth taking a risk depending on your tastes. If you are high brow and expect the finest of sushi don’t come here, but if you want lots of sushi and can take a lower grade of quality, Fuji Sushi may suit the bill. It’s not awful, but it’s not great either — it will do!

I was very pleased with the food selection (which was enormous) and the service. The coconut shrimp, pork shumai, and pork gyoza were amazing. It cost $ 16 per person not including tax or tip and the entire restaurant was exceedingly clean. I’ll definitely be coming back. I think some of the reviewers here need to step down from their pretentious pedestals and remember that this is an Asian buffet, not Alinea.

You’re right. Whatever you’re thinking about the words «sushi» + «buffet», you’re probably right.
Yep, it smells like fish when you walk in. Not the good kind, either. The kind where you know it’s not fresh and it’s just been sitting out under warming lamps all day. Blech.
So, don’t get the sushi or any other fish product.
All of the other stuff (noodles, mongolian beef, etc.) was pretty much on-​par with a typical, bad Chinese restaurant. Which means it wasn’t that bad (definitely edible, anyway). Just stick with that stuff and the desserts. Ice cream and Jell-​O are awesome.
This place is definitely not worth $ 22 per person.
Also, not really sure if its BYOB. There wasn’t any signage indicating yes/​no on that front, but no one said anything when we opened beer. Weird.

The 4 of us went in today because we were craving sushi and plus I got one of those $ 4 off coupon in the mail. First, the sushi bar… I have to say I was disappointed with the amount of sashimi and variety that was available. Many of the rolls had too much rice. But if you are looking for your bread and butter sushi like salmon and avocado or dragon roll then I would definitely say it’s better than most sushi places I’ve had in Chicago. What won me over was the vast selection of seafood, hibachi (even with nice cut of steak) and Asian delicacies (think dim sum, frog leg, shrimp etc). Plus, it’s BYOB! I would definitely go back if I am craving good Asian food and hungry.

Mmmmmk here’s the deal — I don’t know much about sushi buffets but this was terrible. I tried many different things, between their sushi rolls (bland), or their hibachi (the meat was just not good), crab rangoon was mush, shrimp was disgusting, the oysters are the worst I’ve ever had. The best thing I had was the ice cream. I would never ever go back

I really don’t understand the 1 star reviews. I stuffed myself with oysters, crab legs and nigiri for $ 17. Everything was fresh and the décor was much better than I’d expect for an Asian buffet. The sushi was being prepared right in front of me, and I for one appreciate not having to fill out a little piece of paper to receive sushi that has way too much rice and then pay a fee for not finishing my plate. I’ll be back!

I thought this place was great since I went in looking for a asian food/​sushi buffet, not a gourmet meal.
The exterior is a little uninviting but everything looks nice inside. it was 14 bucks for a saturday lunch and the options were quite impressive.
The sushi buffet was decent quality and had a decent selection. It had Nigiri rolls which is unusual for a low price all-​you-​can eat sushi establishment. Other items included delicious chicken on a stick, crab rangoon, sesame chicken and anything else that I might want to satisfy an asian food craving.
There is also an intimidating selection of seafood (everything from Mackerel, to squid and clams) that i stayed away from but others may enjoy.
This place is definitely worth going for if you are hungry and don’t have sky high quality expectations.

Usually when I hear something called «sushi buffet,» I think it’s going to be one of those places where you check off a bunch of rolls on a little order sheet and the waitstaff brings them to you freshly made.
This is not that. This is the Old Country Buffet of sushi and seafood. I ate one bite of shrimp and it was MUSHY somehow, like a mealy apple. I stuck to the veggies after that (which probably had meat sauce in them – don’t even bother if you have any kind of eating restrictions because almost nothing is labeled.)
Even a piece of pineapple I tried to eat was spoiled, unless it just had vinegar spilled on it or something. Either way, ick.

I ate at the Fuji Sushi Buffet earlier this week. It took about 13 years off my life. I tried as many «dishes» as possible. I’d say I tried about 40 different things. Of those, the chocolate pudding was the only thing NOT toxic. I mean, if the luke-​warm oysters that tasted like elmers glue and pencil erasers didn’t turn me off, the not-​yet-​deveined shrimps with poo-​poo still in their backs did. The defining moment was late in the meal when one of my friends brought back the «pizza». This completely changes the saying, «pizza is like sex, even when it’s bad, it’s good.» I think the new saying should be, «pizza is like sex, even when it’s bad, it’s good… unless it’s Asian.» The one thing I did really enjoy, was the detailed painting on the back wall of The Great Wall of Japan. I would go back, but only for the pudding and the painting.

Ate there earlier this week with a bunch of friends. If it was possible I would have given it ½ a star. Here’s what everybody had to say about our dining experience: «there were about 4 things (out of ~100) that were pretty ok», «It had all my favorite asian dishes, only there wasn’t one that I could say, with honesty, was edible.» «Actually, good chocolate pudding… they should call it Fuji Pudding Buffet» «The BYOB is great, but BYOF would be even better»

To be fair, this place is not bad at all, you just need to know when to go. I for one love oysters and crab legs, but do not want to pay a $ 10 premium to have a few. The prices are reasonable when you go Saturday for lunch ($ 14) or for lunch during the week ($ 12 I think). You still get a ton of choices of some good and fresh seafood. I ate my weight in mussels, fish, sushi, shrimp, and fried squid.
Decent atmosphere and everything looks well taken care of (including the food). I would pick this place over any all you can eat sushi buffet since you are limited to only sushi at those places plus you probably pay around $ 20 for those.
Give it a shot, but remember if Oysters and crab legs are not a «must-​have» go for lunch and save yourself a few bucks.

If you have at any point called yourself a «foodie» you will NOT like this place. This is a place for when you realise you are too broke to go to Sushi Wabi or any other high end sushi establishment.
Why 4 stars? The concept and they just opened and I am hoping to go back.
The placed used to be occupied by a Chinese buffet place and now it’s a sushi buffet! Lots of stuff stayed behind like the décor and some neon lights but here is my view of the food.
You get what you pay for. It is $ 24 for sushi dinner buffet. You get LOTS of stuff! There are chefs preparing and refilling the sushi rolls. There are raw oysters, clams, as well as chilled cooked shrimp. The problem is that since they just opened there is not enough turn over to keep the rolls fresh and not dried up. They are on cold trays and there are plenty of sneeze guards but but dried nori around a sushi roll is not that great. When more people showed up, more rolls were made and they were pretty good. There are some pieces of raw fish that is in limited quantity as well as raw fish over rice. So maki and nigiri buffet… And it sounds terrible. But because the sushi part is always looked over by a team of chefs making sure stuff is fresh it was way less scary than some places that just bring out the fish from kitchen in the back and leave it there… So that makes you feel a bit better.
There were different types of crab, hot mussles, as well as a good stand by like General Tso’s chicken. Some tasty soups are available as well as sea weed salad. As much as you want.
Craw fish and larger prawn are are served and I couldn’t figure out how to eat them… sigh…
Over all, it’s for the times when you have sushi taste but a hot dog budget with a big appetite. Was some food kinda … suspicious? Of course. That’s what make buffets, buffets.
If you going to, at any point compare the place to any of the sushi place in Chicago area — remember that you are paying $ 24 dollars. For sushi. And dinner. And desert.
Also, oddly enough, oysters were not bad. They were scary, sitting there on a mountain of ice. And I had really good oysters before. So while I was extra suspicious — they turned out just fine, salty, tasty and went well with a tiny bit of cocktail sauce.
And while sushi buffet might be an oxymoron to some, it is worth a try when on a budget. You get what you pay for and it is surprisingly pleasant!
P. S. — I get food poisoning easily and nothing happened. Already a win.
