Business Owner

Dr. Sims is the director of the Chicago Institute for Voice Care at the UIC Medical Center in Chicago. He is a board certified Otolaryngologist with a career focus in professional voice care. A graduate of the Yale University School of Medicine, H. Steven Sims, MD completed a research fellowship at the National Institute on Deafness and Communication Disorders as well as a clinical fellowship at the Vanderbilt Voice Center. He is also an accomplished musician playing trombone, bassoon and piano, has been a member of choirs, and an experienced vocalist as well.

His personal experiences and education are employed to address the problems of performing artists and other voice professionals. The Chicago Institute for Voice Care is dedicated to increasing the awareness of the unique issues faced by performing artists and providing comprehensive care. He has worked with «Wicked», «Jersey Boys», «Book of Mormon» and numerous shows as well as soloists and Chicago’s Oscar winning Dreamgirl.

First OFF, I can not thank everyone at the Chicago Institute of Voice enough for helping me work through my vocal rehabilitation.
Dr. Steven Sims & his team have been a HUGE blessing to me & other vocalists I’ve worked with.
Personally, my experience with Dr. Sims has been GREAT. I have been with him since I was in college back in 2006. Unfortunately, for me, I’d been struggling with vocal chords issues for the better part of 9 years due to misuse of my voice.
What I LOVED about Dr. Sims is his medical expertise & personal understanding, being a vocalist himself. It is not often you come a across an ENT who knows what being a singer is like. I appreciated this on many levels.
First off, I appreciated his honesty regarding the severity of my condition & his non-invasive approach. He was not quick to jump straight to surgery as an option. He advised/referred me to a wonderful speech therapist & offered an alternative therapy, which I all found to be life changing. The therapy is an IV therapy that injects Glutathione. It has many healthy benefits & been recently used to help vocalists heal along with proper & healthy vocalizing. Truly an amazing & great alternative to vocal surgery if recommended & possible. Secondly, I appreciated his understanding & compassion for me, during a stressful time. He kept it real, but encouraged me not to give up. He helped me out when I needed him most. Lastly, the fact that he introduced me to an organization called MUSICARES, shows his compassion & desire to help the musical professional community. With out his advise or referral to MUSICARES I wouldn’t have healed as much as I have. I’d still be stuck in my own vocally injured HELL.

I received Dr. Sims’ info from industry professionals, which is why I was surprisingly disappointed with the entire visit. (The other staff, however, was lovely and professional.)
First of all, Dr. Sims was fumbling through the office. He kept bumping into me, had trouble getting a device around my neck, and couldn’t get the recording device to work.
In the end, after several troubled attempts with using the video scoping tool, all of which was very uncomfortable, we only got one quick glance at my vocal cords. (Most of the video footage he took was either blank or of my shoes. No joke.)
When it came to discussing my diagnosis, I had to ask all the questions. He provided no information on his own, and the answers he gave were vague or seemed made up. Most of my time with him was spent with him googling the contact info of my general internist, etc. So awkward.
Before I left, he recommended I order glutathione, a healing-boosting compound, to be administered intravenously. I did some research online, and that seemed legit… until I got a call from the Wellness Pharmacy in Alabama, who provides the stuff, questioning the unusually large amount that Dr. Sims had requested. Ugh. After contacting him again, he fumbled through an explanation of the possibly weeks-long injection process, and I was immediately turned off the by whole procedure. Who wants to have a fool sticking needles in their veins?
I won’t be going back to see Dr. Sims in the future.
I had gone to Bastian Voice Institute before, and I felt I was in great hands. They may be in the burbs, but they’re definitely worth it!
