Specialties

Hoertt Custom Guitars specializes in the repair, maintenance, modification, and even creation of stringed musical instruments. Anything as simple as changing strings all the way up to a 100% custom made instrument.

The shop is equipped to take care of your stringed instrument needs as well as amplifier repair and Live sound equipment.

The guitars and basses are built 100% in house and are fully custom. Embracing new technologies they are drawn in CAD, machined by our CNC machine and hand finished for absolute top notch quality.

We also specialize in «higher technologies» for electric guitars. These items can include sustainer pickups, piezo installation, midi pickup installations, LED lights in the fretboard/​body, xy midi pads, etc. If you can think it up then we can probably make it.

History

Established in 2013.

Hoertt Customs was started in 2013 at 1907 N. Mendell. Located in the Bucktown/​Lincoln Park industrial district this building houses many artists and artisans and is a great location for creative thinking.

HCG was started with the belief that high quality work and quick turnaround time are not just a possibility but to be expected.

Not only does Hoertt Customs do the typical repairs/​modifcations, but we do full custom electric guitars and basses. With CAD/​CAM and CNC capabilities… if you can think it, we can make it.

New technologies seem to be shunned by the guitar world but we embrace it.

Business Owner

Phil Fensel started this business in 2013 after working in a job in rapid prototyping. His beliefs are that technology and guitar making should not be mutually exclusive. New and exciting trends are happening and musicians should embrace them.

With a degree in mechanical engineering and a huge passion for musical instruments you bring together the best of both worlds. Real knowledge about how mechanical systems work as well as the understanding that sometimes musical instruments just have their own mojo.

As a gigging musician himself Phil understands the importance of having high quality reliable gear.

Look no further, this is the place for all your guitar-​repair-​related-​needs!
I needed someone to assemble my dream guitar for me, so I went looking for the right person to do it. After researching 5 or 6 places, I chose Phil. I could see that he has some of the best knowledge and expertise in all things guitar related, gets it done well and in time, and is just a nice guy. And I was right! He did EVERYTHING that I needed, and nobody else would give a price as good as his. Nobody.
Phil will listen to what you want and need, and will make sure it is right. He gets it done a lot quicker than everyone else, and does it without compromise. Email and phone always get a response, and he’s a cool dude. And you don’t need to spend as much on the repair as the guitar itself costs. He is very well priced.
My guitar is exactly what I’ve always wanted, and it wouldn’t be what it is without Fast Action Music. I will definitely be coming back when I need any sort of guitar repair or setup. Thanks Phil!

I’ve had very positive experiences with Fast Action Music. Phil did a great job repairing my Egnater Tweaker-​40 combo tube amp. The power transformer died and Phil got it replaced quickly with a more reliable part. Very professional and efficient service.
Fast Action Music also built a custom guitar for me. It was great working with Phil because I would describe in general terms what design and sound I wanted and he would come up with several options for each part (pickups, electronics, design, wood choice, etc). The end product is amazing. I love it.
I wholeheartedly recommend Fast Action Music for both repairs and custom design.

I am so happy I found Fast Action Music. Phil worked on three of my guitars: a strat-​style, a semi-​hollowbody electric, and a classical guitar. Each one came back better than I had hoped, and for a very reasonable price. The turnaround time, professionalism, and communication were all top notch. I will definitely go back to Fast Action next time I need an axe tuned up.

Phil built a pretty awesome customer guitar for me. Fast Action Music was willing to listen to what I wanted, conceptualize it for me, and deliver a product that was far superior to what I was expecting.
They are incredibly responsive and reasonably priced. I would recommend them to any music aficionado who is looking for some repairs or all the way up to a customer guitar like myself.

I play a Steinberger bass which is really tricky to set up well. Phil did a great job with the setup and fixing an intonation problem I was having related to the saddle bridge.
Phil’s rates are good, turnaround time is good, and his knowledge of instruments second-​to-​none.
It is also helpful that he is at Music Garage quite frequently and can pick stuff up or drop it off.
Oh, and I just dropped my SVT 4 Pro amp over to get repaired too. I’ll review that when it comes back.

This guy knows his guitars! Fast, knowledgeable and SUPER helpful. He even drove me to guitar center and helped me pick out which strings I needed for my Banjo! Very happy with the speed too!
