Huey’s Hotdogs

Sad update (from facebook, and yeah I was lazy and didn’t look it up till now): They were unfortunately forced out of their location on Balmoral. A newer post I saw said they still were doing GrubHub deliveries from an undisclosed location (sans the Italian Beef), and that they were looking for a new brick and mortar location.
Hopefully they do find another one within the neighborhood, though I worry if they will succeed in finding another location. El Norte tried to find one, and still hasn’t been successful in relocating to a new spot.

As people are mourning the upcoming loss of Hot Doug’s, I continually walk past the disorganized building construction on Balmoral in hopes that Huey’s has once again opened their doors.
Ever since that fateful Facebook post detailing the unfortunate (hopefully temporary) demise of the best joint for classic burger n’ dog eats, I have craved nothing more than a Kelly’s Bleu Cheese Burger, a Turducken Sausage with fries, or even those delightful mushroom morsels recently attached to the bottom of their hand-​painted menu.
Whether I’m looking to load up on cheese, or take a break from the heavy-​foods and lighten things up with a vegan Reuben, Huey’s was/​is my mainstay.
Come back, please.

Mystery of the night aka Get it together.
Well, I can’t give more stars simply because:
I was starving. I searched for veggie burger options on GrubHub and excitedly found Huey’s. I decided on my order. I saw on their website that they were only open until 10pm on a Saturday night. I ordered at 8:55pm.
I got a «this Sprint voicemail box is full» message over and over.
No professional line informing it was the correct number for Huey’s, as listed ontheir website.
No info on actual hours if different from website.
No idea if the restaurant still exists.
Just a mystery and lots of remaining hunger.
In conclusion, Get it together, Huey’s. What’s the point of a website and a GrubHub presence, if the info is inaccurate?

2 stars only because i cant bring myself to fail a place that ive never set foot in; however, and with that being said, pretty much everything i just ordered sucked
oreo shake: kept sucking up frozen bits, either ice or ice cream, either way no buena
mac n cheese bites: literally bit into fried air multipile times at a dollar a pop
ranch for m&c: tasted sour
fries: every last one was burnt to a crisp
burger: not too bad, but i ordered cheddar and mine came topped with american
chili dog: not too bad, chili had some heat but not a whole lot of flavor
upside, delivery came about 40 min before estimated time so my food was actually warm

Solid hot dog joint. I’m no connoisseur but I do enjoy a good Chicago style dog with all the fixins and I like to branch out for a cheese dog or chilli dog on occasion.
I always prefer char dogs over steamed, Hueys does char dogs very well. Very nice fresh tomato slices and pickle spear. Tangy, sour sport peppers, relish that isn’t neon green/​blue (I know you’ve seen this at some places), chopped onion, well seasoned with celery salt, fresh soft poppy seed bun. It’s a darn good Chicago char dog.
Their Cheese char dog hits the spot too, fewer toppings but who cares because CHEESE SAUCE. Real good.
Their fries are the let down for me though, a little soggy, a little limp, cold fast but I will say well salted. Fries come with the dogs so it’s really not a big deal. Plus I’m here for hot dogs man, not fries.
Also worth noting is the continually friendly service from absolutely everyone who works here. Thanks for being cool.
I should probably try their cheese burger or something else on a day when I’m not experiencing too much shame and self loathing. One day.

I love Huey’s. I always get a char dog, light on the celery salt, with everything else. It is in my top two for favorite hot dog in Chicago, it may be first place. I also get fries with cheese. I typically eat pretty healthy. I usually am not one who gets excited about a pot of cheese to dip my already high calorie fries into; but this cheese is glorious! It’s like a cup of high calorie cheese gold, tasty fucking gold!
I don’t know why people have such an issue with the price. First, it’s in damn Andersonville. They are paying Andersonville rent for their storefront. Second, the ingredients are fresh. The bread is always good, the tomato isn’t some overly ripe mess. The onions are good. I’d rather pay a $ 1 more for my hot dog and fries and have the bun and toppings super fresh.
Also, the guy at the counter is always pleasant.

Yea, I agree with Oscar with it being tasty, short order food.
We always get an order of their chili cheese fries. I enjoy their burgers and tried their char dog today and thought it was okay.
The onion rings could use some work though. I prefer them to be thick cut and crispy.

Among my favorite delivery places! The veggie dogs are excellent. I may not eat meat, but I’m a Chicago girl, and as such, sometimes I gotta have me a Chicago-​style dog. The veggie chili dog and burger are also delish (brats also available, but not my thing). They even have vegan options! For the meat-​eaters, you still have plenty of traditional burger/​dog/​brat options, too, and some less traditional ones like turkey dogs!

Huey’s is a solid place to go.
They have a large menu to choose from. Service was friendly (and patient, as we took forever to decide!) I got their chicken tenders, and the boyfriend got a Chicago dog. Everything came out quickly. The fries were super crispy!
Their food is a little more than most comparable places, but they are in Andersonville…

It’s pretty basic. You like it or you don’t like it. Cheap, tasty, short order food. I’m actually a fan of the burgers and chili, more so than the dogs here. I’ve got vegetarian pals who insist the veggie dogs are superb. Plenty of seats. It’s really great for when you’ve gone tired and broke shopping your way through A-​ville.
I should add that their future is uncertain, thanks to Marty’s Martini Bar’s coming expansion. Here is hoping they find a new home nearby.

I went to Huey’s this sunday, Huey’s was almost filled with people. I can’t forget the taste of juicy, smoked flavor sausage. The price of Hotdogs are included fried potato. If you visit this town, you have to eat it!
(in that day I had already ate a hotdog before visiting Huey’s but Huey’s hotdog is more delicious)

Huey’s is a great little spot. Good food and good feel; feels like a couple people decided to open a little shop in the bottom floor of a little house. The rear of the place can get warm and stuffy, but there is outdoor seating as well.
Good chicago dogs and shakes. $ 5 for a hot dog and fries is fairly reasonable, but I’m quite cheap. Nice little spot I’d like to support.

The stars were deducted from this place because of the service. The guy taking our order was quite rude. Food wise was delish!!! They’re lucky to have good food cuz otherwise I would’ve dismissed this place due to the service.
I had the cheddar brat. Wow! Paired with crispy hand cut fries. Need I say more.

Popped in to Huey’s for some quick grub during Midsommarfest. Huey’s staff is soooooo nice and friendly. Huey’s has an ample side room for inside seating, and a few tables and chairs outside along their sidewalk area.
The hot dogs look good, and I’ll have to go back and try one– the onion rings were light and puffy, not overly fried. Some of the best O-​rings I’ve ever had! (I’m an O-​ring fanatic). We stayed and lingered at their outside table, watching a band at the festival sidestage. An employee was really kind to us, and made small talk. I’m a fan, and I’ll be back to try more!

I love hot dogs! Thick, long and real beef preferred. Nomnomnomz.
Huey’s uses the Chicago staple Vienna Hot Dogs so they fit the bill!
I spotted Huey’s during the Andersonville Midsommarfest on Saturday and mentally noted them to come back to for dinner later. I tried their corn dog which came with a good helping of fries for just $ 4.75. The guys working the shop were super friendly matched by the guy manning things outside for them.
They freshly corned my dog clearly as it came out piping hot. The batter was thick and a bit better than your standard. I had it sans any condiments as they truly were not needed. Flavor was spot on. Loved their fresh cut fries, as well.
I was able to sit and eat my amazing food while listening to Eric Himan on the Out Rock stage during the fest at Huey’s awesome outdoor sidewalk seating. They had some other non corny dogs that looked so good covered in gooey goodness that I will be back to try!

Huey’s is the local burger joint that’s better than just a burger joint. I have friends who come in from the suburbs to eat the veggie dogs from here! Their food is made to order, which is nice, and they have daily specials you can choose from. Their food is a la carte, and can end up being much more pricey than, say, the local McD’s or Burger King, but it should be. It’s better quality food, and they have a nice range of burger toppings, sides, salads, and chili. I usually grab food to go, but I have enjoyed their BYOB dining room and can’t wait for the weather to warm up so I can do that on their outside patio again!

Friday night out for a walk with the girl and she asks «Want to get a hot dog?» How can I say anything but, «yes please» her «I have a great place for us to go, Huey’s and it’s BYOB.» me «Sounds great!»
After a trip to the liquor store for provisions we headed to Huey’s. A friendly welcome by the guy behind the counter made for a nice first impression. With a nice selection for under $ 10 it made for an inexpensive night.
Food — Polish or me, Cheddar cheese dog for her both with delicious fries. They will even allow you to order ketchup on your dog, although I don’t know why you would want to.
Atmosphere — Comfortable and welcome with a nice seating area separate from where you place you order… added bonus they have a foozeball table.
Grab a beverage and some friends and enjoy a great representation of a Chicago staple, the Hot Dog.
Will be back for sure.

I recently received a business owner comment on my last review update, when I lamented the lack of italian sausage at Huey’s. They were reaching out to let me know that they were adding a smoked italian sausage to the menu, and that this would be the August special of the month (sandwich plus fries and drink for $ 7.50).
1. That’s great customer service.
2. Damn, this sausage is fantastic. «Oh, customers are asking for italian sausage? How about we give ‘em a SMOKED italian sausage?» It’s delicious. They offer it with any of the standard hot dog toppings, or you can get mild or hot giardiniera, green peppers, marinara sauce… what a great range of options. I eat mine with green peppers and grilled onions, and this one was by far one of the best I’ve ever had.
So, italian sausage fans: check out the special through August 31, or get just the sandwich after that for $ 6. Maybe I’ll see you there.
PS. The fries are great, the people are as cool as ever, the sidewalk seating is shaded and spacious (still good people-​watching but without the incessant foot traffic of Clark Street around the corner), and they now have a PA system to call out when an order is ready.

Hot diggity dog!!! This place makes one fine vegan hot dog!
Huey’s Hot Dogs offers vegan hot dogs Chicago style or any style you want. They even have veggie burgers, veggie chili, and other offerings such as salads. What’s not to like? The Chicago dog is VERY GOOD and is made with fresh/​quality ingredients. The food is so good that I returned within 3 days — and let it be known that I made the trek from downtown to Andersonville for these dogs.
Both times I ate here with non-​vegan friends and they loved all of the meat offerings. One of my friends even said this place serves the best hot dogs he’s had in town. I say you should just go there, you’ll love it.

We were in the neighborhood and were looking for a quick and cheap lunch… started searching Unilocal and came across Huey’s, so we decided to walk over.
I loved it from the outside because it looked non-fancy…no glowing hotdog with LED lights flashing. And when I walked in the guy cooking in the back yelled, «Hello…I will be right with you guys!» I could tell that this place understands customer service and I love that! I can not tell you the last time a cook even talked to me!!!
We went with the basic Chicago Style Hotdog with Fries. We also had the option on how to cook our dog too and we went with charr… I love me a Charred Hot Dog!!! I also got all of the Chicago Toppings except relish… I just can not do it… I have never been a relish fan at all. I also must compliment the hot peppers on the sandwich. The stems at the top were cut off. In all of my Chicago Hot Dog Experiences, I always have to pick these off. So I was so happy to see that Huey’s cared enough to remove these for me.
I also must comment about the fries because they were really really good. The fries came with the hotdog and typically when a place does that, it usually means that they suck. So I was surprised at how yummy they were… in fact I ate these first because I did not want them to get cold.
I noticed that they had a board with daliy specials. Also there is a Hotdog Happy Hour daily for two hours with Hotdog, Fries and Pop for 5 bucks. (I believe it is 4 to 6pm) The place is also BYOB too. And do not forget Cash because it is cash only!
As we were leaving the cook who was now reading a paper at the front counter said, «Thanks for coming… hope to see you again!» Again good customer service… I can see why this place has 4 stars… good food and good service!!!
