We specialize in Schwarzkopf Color, Keratin treatments and cutting. Schwarzkopf is a première coloring treatment, and we use it for its low ammonia levels and long lasting results. We’re also the only salon in Chicago that specializes in Pintura Hair Coloring. This method is more natural than foils and not as harsh, and gives a superior look for surface hair coloring.

Our salon offers a comfortable rowhouse neighborhood ambiance combined with the convenience of 3 Free off-​the-​street parking spaces makes this a convenient location for his clientele.

JV Color Salon has a beautiful, expansive interior and our expert staff always delivers! Owner John Vaillancourt brings His Oak Street finesse and New York expertise to make this salon a favorite for many types of hair and people. We look forward to seeing you soon.

History

Established in 2000.

The salon was recently located in a new neighborhood. We were on Oak Street for 10 years — the «Madison Avenue of Chicago.» We’re now in a beautiful loft space in the River West neighborhood.

We still have the same finesse and experience of an expert salon on Oak Street, but with a more laid back attitude in a comfortable, welcoming environment. Customers occasionally bring their dogs in, and that’s just fine with is. JV Color Salon is focused on offering you a superior experience. We are relaxed but professional — a high end salon without a stuffy attitude!

After moving to Chicago in 2000 with a successful career in New York City, John opened a color –focused salon on Oak St. Six years later outgrowing his small atelier; John moved JV Color Salon to a spacious loft in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. Only available here in Chicago are John’s skills in the art of Pintura highliting. He works his magical color expertise on discerning clientele, creating natural looking color that earns rave reviews and keeps clients returning for many years.

John Vaillancourt’s expertise was featured in Chicago Magazine’s Best Tressed in the Fall of 2006 and several cover stories of Modern Salon Magazine during his twelve years in Chicago. In his many years of business experience, John encourages you to remember past experiences that did not work for your hair. We look forward to hearing from you.

I was very surprised to read the negative reviews on this salon. I have been going to John for over 10 years for everything from color, cut and keratin. He is exceptionally talented as well as accommodating. I have spent many hours in his salon and have never seen him act rudely in any way to any customer. His first concern is always for the satisfaction of his clients. As a small business owner myself, I have at times given certificates for fund raising auctions and have found that sometimes these clients are the most difficult to please. I am confident in saying that if you go to JV Salon you will be absolutely thrilled with how you look when you leave… and that is the truth!

I hate to do this, but unfortunately I was never even able to step foot into this salon due to a bait-​n-​switch that occurred. I purchased a LifeBooker certificate for a Keratin Treatment for $ 100, which is indeed a deeply discounted rate for this service (but JV Color knew what they were getting themselves into when they agreed to signup to a daily deal site). When the receptionist called to confirm my appointment he mentioned an extra $ 25 fee that would be applied if my hair is «longer than shoulder length.» So I call LifeBooker who reported that the salon should definitely not be charging additional fees since nothing was noted in the fine print when the deal was being sold. Then LifeBooker contacted JV Color and they stood by the fact that the $ 25 fee is in place, despite not mentioning that during the original marketing of the deal.
Needless to say I cancelled the appointment and will not be visiting this salon. I read through other reviews and it appears this has happened with JV Color in the past. It’s unfortunate for JV since I have been looking into finding a new stylist and could have potentially been a lasting client.
Apparanetly the customer is not always right…

Master Esthetician, Jennifer Goldsmith, lives up to her title. The one and only Master Esthetician in Chicago who treats the neck during facial.
My quick treatments with Jennifer can rival the unworthy hour treatments from other estheticians. A chat with Jennifer re skin issues is priceless.
Jennifer does not push products. Will gladly incorporate existing products with suggested products. However, I did get Glo Therapeutics to try… it works! That bio-​therapeutic element is true. Surprisingly, in-​store Glo products is cheaper than online.
As a licensed massage therapist, Jennifer is able to provide a TRUE luxurious, relaxing experience in facial by utilizing appropriate pressure points.
I gladly submit to Jennifer’s care! My days of Groupon Esthetician hopping are over.
NOTE: Everyone at JV Salon is professional, pleasant and sincerely nice. It feels like I am a member of the harmonious family. Easy to get appointment as well. I look forward to a one stop beautification treatments.

I purchased the coupon in April 2013 … so a year it does not even come close. I tried 3 times to schedule appointments with you — I was willing to add on other treatments to accommodate the expiration of the coupon — I have never been called back

Although this salon is clean and modern it has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere. When I walked in someone immediate greeted me, took my coat and offered me water/​something to drink.
Stevie C. is my stylist at the salon and is always on time as well as very friendly and professional. She’s been doing my hair for around 6 years now and every haircut/​style she’s given me has been fabulous. I think the main reason why every style has made me feel really confident and pretty afterwards is because the decision making process on how to do my hair has always been a partnership. When I come in with an idea, Stevie will explain based on her years of experience, how the style will look and what the up-​keep will involve. She customizes the hairstyle I want to fit in with my lifestyle. Plus, she’ll always politely tell me if a style that I’m thinking of will come out differently than how I want it to look. For example, if I asked her for a new hair color that might look terrible on me (and I won’t know it yet), she’ll break out the hair color palate and share how maybe a slightly different shade of my desired color will enhance my natural beauty more.
Recently, she gave me highlights for the first time. As a «color virgin,» I’ll be honest, I was nervous. I didn’t know what to expect with upkeep and maintenance, but I knew that I needed the highlights to enhance the up-​doo for my wedding. Stevie worked with me to lock in the best highlights and lowlights, which resulted in people not saying to me «You dyed your hair» but rather «Did you do something different with your hair?» The look is very natural and blends very well with my hair color. Needless to say, Stevie will be doing my up-​doo for my wedding and doing the bridesmaid’s hair too. Her ability to work as a partner for a great hairstyle as well as her «enhancing natural beauty» ascetic makes her my clear choice.

I’ve been getting my hair cut and colored by John for over 20 years and he does an incredible job, especially with color. He is also very flexible and accommodating when I need a last minute appointment. Hip new location on Milwaukee is very conveniently located with 2 reserved parking spots!

I started at John’s salon after going to another very well known and talented stylist for years who moved around too much.
At first I was a little wary to have John both cut and color my hair. I have now been going to him for years for both services and love his work. Not only that, I get many compliments, especially on my color, and my husband always loves how I look after I visit John.
John is also an incredibly nice down-​to-​earth guy, who is really thoughtful, and very service oriented. I know that every time I go, I will have a great outcome and be spending time with really enjoyable, professional people.
If you want to look great and enjoy getting there, John is the guy!

HORRIBLE customer service– very rude.
I was worried about going to a no-​name salon but read these reviews and thought I’d take a chance. Very wrong.
I purchased a Living Social deal for a Keratin treatment and the fine print says not valid on hair LONGER than mid-​back. I called and explained my hair was AT mid-​back and the employee said I might have to pay an extra $ 50 for long hair. Fine, if they need to use extra product, I get it. Well then the salon called back leaving a voicemail to tell me the owner canceled my appointment and would not accept my voucher! So I called the owner and told him what HIS employees told me and he said that wasn’t his problem, he wouldn’t see me. It didn’t matter to him that my hair is actually at mid-​back; he hadn’t even looked at me yet, and that now I’m out $ 135. When I told him how rude this was to do the day before an appointment and not offer any refund he HUNG UP ON ME!
Thank God Living Social refunded my money and I wasn’t the only complaint– BUYER BEWARE. This owner is horrible and I’d never want to do business with this place.

Keratin Treatment Update: My hair never fell out! It has now been a solid three months since my treatment and while it’s definitely wearing off, it’s been a great run. My hair has been glossy and manageable all summer, with the exception of one über-​humid night in South Carolina (but hey it’s not actually magic). I liked having my hair keratin-​ized so much that I’ve since bought another deal so I can re-​vamp my do’ for the remaining hot summer/​fall months, albeit for a different salon offering the treatment for $ 115.
So, good work JV Color Salon. A great process that looked and lasted as promised. But for the sky-​high prices I’d be a return customer.

Just realized this is the second time I reviewed this salon, but I’ll leave them both and let Unilocal sort it out. John has been coloring my hair to perfection for about 6 years. I had someone (frankly, less expensive) cutting my hair at another salon. But when she left and I couldn’t track her down, I started having John do both my cut and color, and I have left the salon feeling and — I think — looking fabulous every time. He’s certainly no more expensive than the best salons in Chicago and he’s every bit as talented or better.
The first time I had John color my hair, it was a little different than I was used to. I wasn’t sure how I felt about it until my neighbor — at the time an aesthetician in the salon within Harpo Studios (who knew?) AND the head of training at The Ritz Carlton Chicago spa — saw me and said, «Fabulous hair. I see you went with the runway look.» Imagine my chagrin when I – the hair snob — learned I was out of the loop on the latest style in hair color!
I’ve followed John faithfully to a few salons and am thrilled that he’s had his own salon for several years now. I love that the space is intimate and quiet relative to the typical top salons downtown. I love the cute little bottles of ice cold Diet Coke. I love that John’s assistant «G» is generously and thoughtfully willing to run down the street to get me some lunch. (It takes time to look fabulous and a girl gets hungry!) But most importantly, I LOVE the way I look when I leave the salon.

Very personable, attentive and determined to satisfy their customers!
I purchased a groupon for a keratin treatment and unfortunately the first time the process did not take. John worked me in less than a week later and performed the process again, no questions asked. Luckily this time my hair was a bit more cooperative and now I have shiny and straight hair! Thank you John!

John has been cutting (and coloring) my hair since I was 12, and it always looks fantastic. The salon is clean, welcoming, and quiet, and you even get to stop by Kate Spade on your way out the door. If you’re looking for upscale, professional hair color, this is the place.
