I attended a comedy show and fundraiser called Laff-Fest 2010 at Notre Dame College Prep in Niles, IL, where the entertainment was provided by Mike Oquendo Events, aka, The«Mikey O. Comedy Show.» It featured the following stand up comedians: — Joey Villagomez — HBO Latino — Kenn Garr — Second City — Ethan Peldo — Wisecrackers — Patrick Chase — The Improv — Marci Deloney — Global Giggles All these comics were local(or «loco»)and their performances were superb. They all had good rapport with the audience, good material(sufficiently irreverent, personal, Chicago-tinged, ethnicity and religion were not taboo, in spite of the Catholic high school venue, and delivered with great comedic timing and energy.) Mikey O. was the perfect M.C., warming up the audience and revving us up for this fundraiser and other causes like how to support sending pizzas to our troops in Afghanistan. The small theater at Notre Dame was a great room for an intimate, energized evening of yucks. And I just couldn’t help having my favorites here. While I loved them all, Joey Villagomez was superbly funny as the young latino dad who plays off his short guy, wise-cracking, and very self-deprecating gang banger image. Ken Garr is the loveable energetic and irreverent south side Irish guy, with biting personal and family stories. And Ethen Peldo had that deadpan, Bob Newhart approach, with the wise use of pauses and appropriate«looks.» All in all, walking into a show with no expectations, I was pretty much blown away with the talent and impressed with Mikey O’s production. $ 20.00 admission. Proceeds to the comedians and to Notre Dame’s Service immersion trips to New Orleans and Harlan, KY. Mark your calendar for next year’s Laff-Fest. Just what the doctor ordered on cold February Saturday night in Chicago. And check out these comedians to see where else they’re performing, too.
