You have to have a lot of pride, determination and class to operate the Chicago consulate of a Slavic nation in one of the most blue-​blood, WASPY sections of the Gold Coast. The building is gorgeous – a landmark of sophistication and elegance designed in the Beaux-​Arts style. I saw the interior once, and it’s a bit different from the ornate façade – functional business spaces instead of fancy guilded parlors.
