Patrick Richards started Richards Patent Law after leaving McDermott Will & Emery, where he served as a partner in the Intellectual Property Media and Technology practice group. Patrick founded Richards Patent Law to focus his significant patent law experience into a practice directed to meeting the needs of Chicago businesses and individuals.

Patrick opened Richards Patent Law in 2009 after spending over eight years as a patent attorney with McDermott Will & Emery LLP, a large general practice firm in Chicago where he concentrated his practice on patent prosecution, counseling, opinion work and litigation.

As a partner at McDermott, Patrick managed international patent portfolios for several large corporations, as well as a number of small and medium sized businesses. Patrick has experience in all phases of utility, design and PCT patent prosecution in many technical fields, including the areas of mechanical, electrical, computer systems, chemical and financial products technologies.

In addition to his extensive patent prosecution experience, Patrick has counseled numerous clients on matters concerning: patent portfolio acquisition and management; licenses, sales and purchases; freedom to practice opinions; patentability opinions; non-​infringement opinions; and enforceability opinions.
