History

Established in 1987.

Founded in 1987, Mr. Kap Shin opened up a small auto body shop in the upper northeast Chicago community to support their (at the time) three children. After word got out about Royal’s quality work and great service, more and more vehicle owners sought after Mr. Shin’s body shop which grew the shop to it’s next location near Northpark University in 1989.

In 1995, a fire that was ignited by an adjacent building destroyed the building which forced Mr. Shin to move his business a few blocks north. After three years, Northside Prepatory School claimed the city blocks, forcing Royal to move to its current and fouth location.

Now serving the greater Edgebrook/​Jefferson Park District, Royal has made a permanent home just off the corner of Elston and Central Ave. Once started in a small 1500sq feet garage, Royal has grown to a 30,000 sq feet. facility. Services offered range from Body repair to & Engine/​Trans replacements. In 2011, Royal expanded to sell pre-​owned vehicles.

Su L.

Manager

Ever since she was young, Su Lam has always known that she would take over the family business her father had started in 1987. What started out to be a simple goal to retire her parents has evolved into a true passion.

Su Lam has been a part of the Royal Automotive family since June 2001. She started out as a body tech assistant while receiving her Bachelors degree in Marketing and Management from the University of Illinois.

After her BA, Su pursued more technical education at the Oakton Community College where she studied Automotive Service. With more hands-​on experience, and formal automotive education, she received her I-​CAR and ASE Certifications.

Su specializes in auto damage estimating, Insurance Claims, shop production, and custom paint projects (classics/​antiques, show cars, body kits).

I am generally so wary of car repair shops, because so many of them rip you off, but Royal is honest and efficient, and they do amazing work. I brought my car here after it had gotten damaged from multiple accidents, and I feel like I have a brand new car. Royal’s price for the work was lower than the pricing I received from 3 other places, and they got it done much quicker than I had expected. From the first phone call to the moment I drove my car out of the lot, every interaction I had was excellent. Su and the rest of the staff are so knowledgable about cars and they are so pleasant to work with. I cannot say enough good things about this place; I am so happy with the work they did, and I had such a pleasant overall experience. Whenever I need work done on my car, I am bringing it here.

Have been here twice for some minor work (front bumper, grille, hood, and passenger side ding) and each time I’ve always thought they did a really good job. Sue and her team care about their business, customers, and the work they do. I’ve felt comfortable letting them know what I needed and they share their honest opinion and advice on what should and shouldn’t be done. They are very easy to talk to and always keep you updated on the work they are doing and what they will do; always in constant communication. I highly recommend them for body work as I can only speak on that aspect. Thank Royal.

The best auto body repair shop in the city. Unfortunately, I have had either my car or family car repaired over the years because of body damage and have been disappointed with the work of other shops. The folks at Royal were friendly and professional from the start to the finish. Josh told me what had to be done and when the work would be completed. The work was done on time and my daughter was pleased with the results. Did not have any extra or unexpected charges. I would not hesitate to recommend Royal Auto.

I’ve taken my car to Royal Automotive several times in the past, each worthy of a positive Unilocal review, but this is the first time I’ve taken the time to do it.
This time, perhaps due to Chicago’s ridiculously large & steep speed-​bumps, my car’s engine under cover partially detached & was hanging low ready to clang against anything too high & to rattle when driving over bumpy terrain. I made an appointment with Royal Auto they made time for me promptly & I had my car in the next day, after a short time it was ready to pickup. The engine under cover was salvageable, they repositioned & clipped it back into place, at no charge. When the last owner of my car had the same issue resolved at the dealership it cost ~$ 200.
Royal Automotive always have my car info & past repair files on hand, call me by name, listen to my description of the issue & desired result, call post-​diagnostic/​pre-​repair, give work options & prices, complete visits & return car quickly, their customer front-​end is always clean & bright, personnel are cheery & helpful. I’ve had my all of the last 2 years of car issues resolved there (from repairs to maintenance), had a positive customer experience, & had a lower bill than expected. I will return to them in the future & I’d recommend you give them a shot.

I’ve been going to Royal for a year now. These people are remarkably communicative and accommodating. They try to save you $ where they can and their quality of work has been 5 star. I’m at the point where I won’t go anywhere else for automotive work, even for a simple oil change.

I have been going to Royal Automotive for about 5 years. A friend recommended them to me, and I have been 100% satisfied with their work. I have since recommended them to several of my friends, and all have come back to me thanking me for the great advice. I feel very lucky to have a repair shop I can trust.
I have mostly worked with Chris or Su. They are super friendly and knowledgeable. They always take the time to fully explain what is wrong and what my options are. They have often come up with creative solutions to help me save money on repairs for my older car. They have even done a couple of minor repairs free of charge, telling me they appreciate my loyalty as a customer. When they are busy, they still find a way to fit me in. Their waiting room is spacious and comfortable, with big comfortable couches. Repairs are always done on time, and have often come in below the estimate, but never above. They don’t pressure you to have more work done than needs to be. I have never once had to return because something wasn’t fixed correctly or completely.
This is a family business that is doing everything right. If you are looking for warm, knowledgeable service, excellent work, fair prices, and easy on-​time scheduling with a comfortable place to wait, this is the place.
One more thing: As of this review, Royal has 50 reviews and 48 are 5 stars and one of the other two is 4 stars. I use Unilocal all the time, and I have seldom seen such unanimous praise of any business, let alone the oft hated auto repair shop. Just wanted to make sure people recognized that :)

In January I had a really bad accident that total the front left end of my Toyota took my car to Royal and these guys repaired my car like it was brand new out from the dealer they did such a great job the car even drives better now, these guys are clean there fast and they are amazing and what they can do to make your car brand new paint job amazing all I have to say is A+ and 5 stars… thanks Royal…

You never want to have to go see a body shop, but when you do, you want them to be like these guys. After my car was keyed and its side mirror bashed, my fiancé took it to the closest shop, which happened to be Royal. Turns out they were an authorized repair shop for State Farm, my insurance, so all repairs were guaranteed for life. That plus how nice the staff and facility were why we chose Royal initially.
We made an appointment for the next Monday, but we got snowed in by the Super Bowl blizzard. They were very understanding and had no problem with us bringing it in the next day.
Originally, the estimated repair time was about a week, but we got a call that Thursday that the car was done. When we picked it up that Saturday, we were very, very impressed. They kept my car in the showroom after they washed it post-​repair, so she was shiny and warm when we got there. More impressive was the workmanship. They blended a paint color to match perfectly to my 2003 Pontiac Vibe… 12 year old paint color! And the new side mirror matched perfectly as well.
I hope I never have to go back to them, but if my car ever needs body work again, I will be bringing her back to Royal.

I found Royal Automotive when I was researching for a reputable body shop in my area. So, I decided to give Royal Automotive a shot. I made an appointment and had my vehicle inspected by Chris. Chris was very professional and courteous from the start. I got a very competitive quote and was pleased. He explained what the job to repair my vehicle would entail and made me feel «Safe» to leave my car at their body shop. I am very cautious when leaving my vehicle anywhere, but you can trust this company. Plus Enterprise works on site which is a bonus. I ended up getting my car repaired for my rear bumper. It had minor damage/​paint scuffed off of bumper. It took Chris and his crew Only 2 days to do the work. It turned out looking Brand New again! I would recommend Royal Automotive to my friends and family hands down! If your looking for a professional job and showroom quality, then Royal Automotive is the Only place to go. Thanks again Chris!

I brought in my challenger in for repairs after a car accident my front end and some of my passenger side was damaged totaled at least 5 grand in damages they kept my car for about 10 days to make sure everything was perfect gave me a warranty on the work performed my car looked the same as the day It came of the truck from the dealer everyone was so nice and helpful suh is so awesome and extremely helpful kept me updated while the repairs were happening I highly recommend them.

Less than 24 hours after I bought it, my car was hit by a truck while parked in front of my apartment. I found Royal by checking out Unilocal reviews and took it in for body and mechanical repairs. From the initial damage assessment with Chris to navigating the insurance with Su, I found the entire process to be efficient and problem free. They were very friendly as well. The repairs performed, which required a fender replacement plus a lot of hand work and color matching were performed flawlessly. They even took the time to fix some interior trim in the car that wasn’t part of the claim, free of charge.
Overall, it was a great experience. I wouldn’t hesitate to go back to Royal for body or mechanical work.

This was my first time dealing with an auto body shop and it was a great experience. The turn around was faster than they quoted and the final product was flawless.

Avoid! I went in for a valve stem replacement because mine broke while I was filling my tire up with air. The manager behind the desk said because I have a tire pressure monitoring system they couldn’t do it and I should go to the dealer. That’s false, on a 2010 C300 the tpms is inside the tire and is not affected by the tip of the valve stem breaking off. I have had just the valve stem replaced before. Their techs are not properly trained. Avoid!!!

It had been awhile since I’ve had to look for a auto body repair shop so checked on Unilocal for shops in my area. Royal Automotive had great reviews, so I gave them a call. I took my vehicle to them, got an estimate which was sent to the insurance company. The repairs covered an OEM rear bumper and exhaust. They also worked with the local Enterprise which had a vehicle there and then picked up at Royal after my repairs were completed. The Mazda looks great and although I wish I hadn’t been hit, my experience with Royal has been great. Thank you!

I don’t know where to start with this review. I was taken away by their great customer service. Initially, I was afraid to leave my car at any body shop because just like a parent leaving their child for their first day of school, I was afraid of anything happening to it. I took my 2008 mustang to have some work done to the front and rear bumper. After getting updated throughout the whole process by sue, I was told that I would be able to pick up my car the following day.
This blew my mind because I was expecting my car to be in the body shop for over three days. Furthermore, when I picked up my car, I was amazed at how dead on they were with the paint color.
The great thing about this body shop is that they guarantee their work for the life of you owning that car. I would definitely suggest this body shop to any auto enthusiast who is skeptical to leave their car at just any random body shop. You will not be disappointed.

I had the master plan of taking out two tasks with one trip by dropping my car off to get an oil change and walking down to the DMV to get an Illinois license. It was unsuccessful due to my dumb ass forgetting my social security card, but Royal Auto was awesome.
They were quick, cheap, and they had a super comfy and convenient waiting area. There’s free wifi and the staff was super nice so even though it’s a little off the beaten path I’ll definitely drop off for auto work when I need it.
If you’re venturing to the DMV, take a breath of fresh air a half mile up Elston. It’s worth it.
