History

Established in 2009.

Sapere Art/​Intuitive Works was opened June 1, 2009 by Gary W. Marr, former hospitality executive who spent 30 years in the sales, execution and visual/​content design of special events. Himself an emerging artist, Gary left the Hotel world to take a breather after 30 years, to practice his art fulltime, and in doing so, founded Sapere Art — the Art Gallery side of his business in the Flat Iron Arts Building in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago — the «Heart of Art» in the city. Amongst over 35 other artist studios, Gary’s collection of Artists run the gamut in genre and mediums. His selection process is easy — 1) Their art has to be good, 2) Even with different genre’s — it has to all work together and 3) The artist just has to be passionate and a nice person.

Business Owner

Gary spent 30 years in Hotel Catering Sales, where he sold, visually as well as gastronomically designed special events and meetings in major hotels in Chicago and across the country and Hawaii. Utilizing his visual design experience, Gary «got into Art» later in his life, and truly found his passion. Deciding to take a break «for awhile» from Corporate and the bustling life in hotels and meetings management, Gary founded Sapere Art, originally meaning just to have a little hide-​away «to do art in». That in about ten minutes morphed into Sapere Art, with as of this publishing, 11 artists and over 170 works of art on canvas, paper and fabric in stock.
