Sol de Mexico

We came in on a Sunday so it wasn’t that busy and we the meal was very delicious. Ambiance is very nice, welcoming, and trendy. Food looks just as good as it tastes. We tried various margaritas, my favorite one was with cilantro! Will be back for more.

Ate there last night with my wife and kids. I ordered the pork in green mole. I asked for it medium-​well. My dinner arrived at late and luke warm at best. The pork looked to have been cooked previously in the day or maybe even the day before! I asked for it medium well and instead I received a cut of pork rib that was barely warm with a pink to red pink middle.
I did not feel well the rest of the evening. There’s also a sign on the door, asking for a part time cook. Not sure what has happened, but this place needs an internal food and service review.
You need more than one wait staff. You need to kitchen to COOK the food to order. Not re-​heat. I will not be going back.

Hidden gem in the Belmont-​Cragin area! This is my family’s favorite restaurant. The food and service is exceptional all around. We have NEVER had a bad experience here.

My wife and I wanted a night out at a good resturant. We were avid fans of this place since the owner is so hands on from all aspects of resturant and we very much like the food. That said, we had good expectations.
To start, the owner did come out to greet the clientel and as always is super friendly. We always appreciate that. Let me get to the reason for the review. My wife ordered a pozole dish that has chicken. To our dismay, the chicken was undercooked. That is already bad as it is but my wife had to wait close to 15 minutes to get the attention of a server to say what the problem was. On a side note this was happening all night long (the service). No consisent server or service.
She did get another plate minus the chicken. We ordered dessert and were done. The worse thing regarding our service was that the owner did not come out to acknowledge the incident. Last I checked eating an undercooked chicken can get you really sick. At the end of the night a server removed the dessert from the bill which was a whopping $ 4.00. That left us speechless. We are not asking for full compensation of dinners here but just some ownership to the lack of service and food. This place charges quite a bit for their dishes so you would hope to receive some type of consistency in all aspects.

Walked in on a week day with my bf. The place was kinda quiet and different. Carlos is great, he helped us pick something from the menu, a really good steak and a seafood dish. The food is SO delicious it has an amazing taste. Also the best Bloody Mary. I definitely recommend this place.

I would call it high end Mexican food. Absolutely delicious. My husband had lamb shanks. I had the steak. The mole is award winning. I would like to go back to try their tasting menu. Margaritas were very good. I tried the habanero and the pomegranate.

One of the best Mexican restaurant in town in such a unexpected location… the food and service was superb and their silverware is very unique, the waitress was nice enough to write down the name of it.
Had the Entremes appetizer, all four items were delicious, main course was the Lamb and the Pollo Mole Negro and both were very good, the mashed potato with the Lamb was so good and the mole was expertly made… will definitely be back to try some more items on their menu.

Appetizers were good. Wasn’t too crazy about the fact that there was so much fat on my dish but the staff was so sweet. I think if I returned it they would have changed it. Really nice staff makes you want to come back

Great service and great food. The tortillas were handmade. I had a glass of white wine and my girl friend had a glass of red. Both choices were perfect for our dishes. The waiter took care of us from beginning to end. He went out of his way to name each of the ingredients that were in each type of Mole we ordered. I’m definitely coming back for more!

This place is a hidden gem. Excellent food, good service. Not to be missed are the flautas, enfrijoladas, tamales de elote and the guacamole. Would have given it 5 stars but I got a weak drink I had to send back. I ain’t mad. Will definitely be back!!!

We have been here twice now and both times were wonderful, start to finish. Authentic, flavorful food, with exquisite presentation, and a very reasonable price.
On top of that, the ambiance is accentuated with wonderful art work.
If you’re looking for excellent Mexican that isn’t the usual fare, please try this place out. And be sure to leave room for dessert.

The food is also AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS!!! I can’t even explain the taste sensations going through my mouth when I tried the puerka with pumpkin sauce. Might sound weird but WOW. and the chorizo and bean salad accompanying this dish was so perfect, I can’t say enough!
The apps we chose were the ceviche and the sopes– my favorite. each one had a different topping like meat, chicken, guac and one with fried plantain!!! Can you even imagine the tastes that are going through your mouth!
I also had a guava mojito, which is always a hit. They had sangria too which I tried and it was okay.
The dessert was just the perfect end to a perfect Sunday night… Traditional flan, but it was so soft and sweet, melt in your mouth greatness!!! If I hadn’t been so full from everything else I would have enjoyed a nice glass of Frangelico… Next time… Always a next time. Can’t wait!!!

For any other dining establishments that are trying to compete for this award, please read on, as I’ll periodically provide tips on how to provide below par service to the masses.
I was eager to try Sol de Mexico, based on the great Unilocal reviews. I made reservations online, but when I didn’t receive any kind of confirmation page/​email, I decided to call to make sure that the reservation went through. Sure enough, it didn’t, but I was able to make my Mother’s Day reservation with Maria. Or so I thought.
TIP #1: Create a website and make your customers believe that making a reservation is actually possible.
There were people waiting outside and inside as I made my way to the hostess. She already had an unwelcoming look on her face as I began to tell her that we had a reservation for 4 at 8pm.
‘We’re not taking any more people.
But I made a reservation.
We can’t take any more people. We’re overbooked.’
(I glance around and see an available table for 4 just beyond her and noticed more in the next room.) ‘Soo, why would you accept my reservation if you’re not able to honor it? You should’ve told me that I wouldn’t be able to get a table over the phone when I made the reservation.’
(Getting frustrated) ‘We accepted walk-​ins, so we’re overbooked now. We can’t take any more people.‘
TIP #2: Think of the most qualified, gracious, people-​pleasing person that would be perfect for the host/​hostess position. Hire the opposite.
No apologies, absolutely no sign of any kind of desire to rectify the situation. My mom tells me that we should just go somewhere else. As we leave, we encounter another family who made reservations that weren’t able to get seated. I’m not sure what kind of business model Sol de Mexico follows, but turning away patrons who have made a reservation on the most lucrative day of the year for dining establishments is outrageous.
TIP #3: When Mother’s Day approaches, turn away everyone who made a reservation. Better yet, also hang a huge sign in your window that says, ‘We don’t like making money.‘
There are a MILLION amazing Mexican restaurants in Chicago. One would think that you’d be on top of your game with all the choices your customers have. Thankfully, I did my research, and we had a fantastic dinner nearby, but it was still a frustrating experience. If you were able to turn away about a dozen people in the 2 minutes that I was there, I can’t imagine how many more families whose Mother’s Day you ruined.

My fella’s band is practicing in a new neighborhood, which means a new neighborhood for exploring eats. Our first go was a good one. A very good one. The queso fundido turned us into murmuring idiots. So did the sopes. And the pineapple margarita.
One tip: When they say the jalapeño margarita has «jalapeño syrup,» take note that it also has an entire jalapeño, seeds and all, crushed into the drink. Holy fahrenheit, I almost died after a single sip.

food: we had a mini tasting of what dishes we are having for the party and well… Let’s just say the food tastes as good or better as it looks ! I’m mexican and I’m very picky about «upscale «Mexican food. I don’t like when ppl try to fancy up food and it’s just tastes like everything but Mexican … NOT HERE the food is amazing can’t say anything less…
Décor: the interior design is so beautiful that I really felt like I was having a dinner in San Miguel de Allende.

On a Saturday night one might prefer a night out, some romance, or some time among the pretty bottles behind a bar. The kid works counter to this so on this particular Saturday we went with the take-​away option.
We kept it simple and ordered the venison and the Chilean sea bass. They quoted 20 minutes. I got myself together and started driving.
The neighborhood doesn’t have much to offer at night and a lot of the block seem darkened to this place stands out. The inside is cozy, lit by paper stars lamps and decorated with fun art. There’s a small bar in the back with a healthy amount of pretty bottles.
As soon as I walked they were ready with the bag of food. I thought I’d arrived early. I handed over the vCard Andover heard so, even talking about the black molé so quickly tried to halt the transaction to acquire some (in case a charge was required). They rang me up anyway, suggested I sit at the bar, and one of the women disappeared into the back only to returned with a little bowl of dense black lovely and a spoon. The favors were amazing. Earthy, a little smokey with a hint spice. She was so kind and brought me a freshly made tortilla as well. I’ve never smelled or tasted a better tortilla. The again most tortillas are the standard corn or flour variety without much flavor or character. I thanked them profusely and high-​tailed it home to open the presents.
The Chilean tilapia was served with unknown vegetables that were all good but the fish itself and the sauce were extraordinary. The fish was seared on each side but cooked perfectly on the inside. The sauce was so icy and rich. The venison was also perfectly cooked and served with Mexican rice with veggies. The sauce on the venison was a lovely red molé full of dried pepper and spice. Less smoke than the black molé and a little brighter but still earthy and rich.
Heading back here as soon as I can to keep working my way through the menu.
