Stage 773 is a four theater performance facility in the Belmont Theater District in Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood.

The shows in our building feature Chicago’s finest off-​loop artists in musicals, theater, dance, comedy and more.

Stage 773 offers affordable event rental space for productions, shows, meetings, and events. We offer material, technical, organizational, and emotional support to all our tenants.

Every year, we bring together more than 75,000 patrons with 5,000 artists in productions that range from low-​budget, intimate shows to the largest sketch comedy festival in the nation. Stage 773 presents accessible, affordable, and exceptional entertainment, as well as opportunities for artists to develop through continuing education and programming.

History

Established in 2010.

Brian Posen, Stage 773’s artistic director, had a vision. It was to create a multi-​complex theater that is welcoming, nurturing and collaborative. People have witnessed Brian’s vision on a smaller scale through the Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival, which he has produced annually since 2000 and has grown to be the largest festival in the nation. This vision became reality after years of working with the Stage 773 board to locate quality space on the north side of Chicago. In June of 2010 the Stage 773 opened its doors as the new off-​loop theater on Belmont Avenue. With this opening came new friendly faces, a fresh new outlook on off-​loop theater and a plan to proliferate theater culture throughout Chicago. Having just undergone a massive renovation (website included!) in mid-​2011 Stage 773 is now proud to open our doors as a four-​theater complex with the ability to host everything from low-​budget black-​box productions to the largest sketch comedy festival in the nation.

Business Owner

Brian Posen is creative director of Stage 773. He also is the co-​founder of Cupid Has a Heart On, the longest running musical comedy show in Chicago, and the executive producer of The Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival, the largest sketch comedy festival in the nation.

Brian currently teaches at The Second City. In the past, he also has taught classes and workshops all over town, including Steppenwolf, Columbia College, The Actor’s Theater, and the University of Illinois.

Saw Dreamgirls here. I was skeptical as to how they would stage this production in such a small space, but it ended up being one of my favorite musical theater experiences to date. The show felt intimate and did a great job of immersing you in the story. The acoustics were great, aside from a couple minor microphone feedback sounds here and there, but they were barely noticeable.
That being said, everyone in the cast and band did a fabulous job. It’s incredible how much talent each and every person has, and how much heart and soul they put into the show. I could not stop smiling throughout, it was just that wonderful of an experience. Go see it!

The sign blazes 773 in giant numbers. So how was it, I had driven down this stretch of Belmont countless times and have never seen it? Just another of life’s mysteries.
But my advice? Go. This theater focuses on local talent and the intimate surrounding will have you feel like you are actually a part of the show. Well, I guess I was, as the 4 feet between the actors and me were quickly breeched and I became involved in one of the skits!
If you go– go for the banquette seating as it has to be more comfortable than the café chair that I was seated in. And don’t forget to grab a drink at the up front bar (drinks are allowed inside the theater). This bar is one woman show and she gets the drinks poured and you on your way in no time, no matter how many people are clustered around. And a bottle of wine? Just $ 24. Can’t beat the deal!
Usually there is street parking available on this part of Belmont which is also a nice feature. Tickets are cheap, the entertainment level is high and it’s just a fun way to spend an evening!

Great theatre space with 4 small venues inside. Has a bar in house as well! Staff is super friendly.
We came to see the «Cupid» show which was hilarious, but not for the easily offended. The show had a lot of music, a little dance, and some audience interaction too. There was a short intermission, which was nice, but maybe not necessary? But we were able to get another drink in that time, so I won’t complain.
Ticket prices are reasonable– $ 22, but with a $ 3 service charge for online ordering. For the Cupid show though, we got a free drink ticket for a drink up to $ 6! That was a nice surprise! They have a drink menu and nothing was more than $ 7, which was nice to see in a downtown theatre. They also offered beer buckets for $ 20 which included some (but not all) revolution cans.
The theater had nice, comfy seats, and for our show it was general admission. We chose to sit front row, which, again, if you’re shy, you may want to avoid, because there is a 98% chance you’ll get picked on by the performers.
Bathrooms were clean too!
I wouldn’t hesitate to come back here. We had a great experience!

Just had one of the worst experiences of my life at this place. The show I was watching had a small intermission so I decided to get a drink at the bar big mistake. There were two people working there and neither would take my order. I need to premise this by saying that this would have been my first drink. First attempt talking to the guy at the bar about my drink order he flat out ignores me and walks away. Second attempt I am holding the menu and flaling my arms about trying to get someone to take my order. The female accidentally makes eye contact with me as soon as she see ‘s I am aware of this she rolls her eyes and turns away. I am standing there speechless as other people as soon as they step to the bar they are being served. When I realize that I am the only person of color at the bar. PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT A BUSINESS THAT PRACTICES DISCRIMINATION WHEN THEY THINK NO ONE IS LOOKING

Cool venue. Went to see Cupid has a heart on and it was really funny. Drink prices at the venue are fair and not overpriced. I would recommend this place for seeing a show. I’ll definitely be back to see other performances.

I saw the show called «» oh man I am forgetting the name! Actually it was pretty forgettable. Wait let me go to their website… oh yeah it was «Cholesterock». I have no idea why the audience was going crazy. Don’t get me wrong — the actors were brilliant (I have seen some of them before) but the script really just meandered all over the place; didnt know what the point was. Didn’t feel it at all (honestly felt like most of the audience was friends and family but I could be wrong). The last show I had seen here «Cupid has a heart on» was amazing! That is why I went there; this one was disappointing.

Add this to the list of «Why don’t we come here more often?» places.
I’ve seen a mix of different shows here, and please note that Cupid Has a Heart On is really freaking hilarious, so go see it. We recently saw a Tap Dance troupe situation thing and it was excellent as well.
Tickets are really reasonably priced, you can usually find a deal on Goldstar or some other discount site, so definitely give those places a look!
My only small complaint would be that my butt always ends up hurting after sitting on those chairs for an hour or so & it’s always chilly in the theatre so bring a sweater or jacket. Other than that, two ecstatic thumbs-​up.

This musical comedy was really funny.

Booked tickets online to see A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum for Mother’s Day. It was our 1st time at this Chicago Theater and we didn’t know what to expect, tickets were «open seating». Thank goodness we arrived early, Studio 773 offers valet parking for a nominal $ 10 fee but, we were able to find parking on the street. The downside to street parking, it only lasts for 2 hours. However, after we picked up our tickets at will call, the polite usher greeted us and informed us how long the play would be and when the intermission would occur so we could put more $ in the parking kiosk.
As we entered the smallish theater, many of the seats had been reserved for parents/​friends of the performers. This was a special Mother’s Day performance so cast members treated their friends and family. We were able to find seats in the upper tier. It was a completely full theater.
I had seen the play in New York City many years ago with Nathan Lane and it was hilarious! The smaller production at Stage 773 was engaging. My mom was in from Albuquerque and she laughed during the entire performance. I’m glad we sat up high because the stage is on the smallish side and we were able to get a good depth perception of the performance.
The lobby is large enough to mingle prior to the performance and they have a full bar service. Tickets were very affordable and I would definitely recommend this venue.

This was our first burlesque show that we have ever attended. Since I do not much about these shows this review is about the venue but the show was good and entertaining. Everyone here was very helpful and friendly. It’s very unique with all different kinds of art. Small intimate place that has a cozy feel to it.

Love this place! Very intimate place to take in theater. Waiting area is smal, but they do serve alcohol, etc. pre-​show and there are a few tables if you get there early enough. Parking is free, also if you get there early enough across the street.
Last time I went it was raining so parking at the lot across the street was super handy!
Great place for theater and great experience without that downtown tourist heavy vibe.

I’ve been here for a couple of my friend’s sketch shows. The shows were fine. The quality is probably going to vary greatly based on the show you see, which likely depends on whether you’re obligated to see a friend’s show.
The 2 theaters I’ve been in are nice and comfy. They have a bar, so be sure to get loose before your show.
The lobby can get really crowded before a show. The theater doesn’t even really attempt to do any crowd control until your at the door for one of the 3 theaters in the building.

I was impressed. Came to see «Pretty Windy». The Chicago Sketch Comedy Festival had something for everyone’s taste in humor. From funny, too witty and even gender specific. Downton Abbey groupies… maybe not.
The comedy troupe had some very witty and challenging moments. I was worried it would be superficial and predictable. The stages were perfect for sketch comedy.
Waiting outside the theaters for the 9 PM show, I was struck by the image of the Cook County Jail. The cinder-​block walls and cage like fencing added to the charm of the place, not to mention a thesaurus like wall filled with all description of human genitalia, sexual acts and excrement’s.
Seating was general admission. You’d be smart to get there early.
I will come back next year, maybe twice for their two week Sketch Fest. Although, they could do with larger pours of wine and selections of munchies at the bar.

773 theater is a living breathing space, get there early and take it all in, the auditions taking place, a stack of head shots on the table, the theater folk warming up in the lobby prior to their audition, post performance buzz talk, it’s the real deal. You will also want to get there early when the seating is GA so you can line up to have your first pick of seats. Be sure to take in all the cool art that is displayed in the lobby as well, very unique pieces that make the lobby space that much more intriguing.
There is a full bar in the lobby that is very convenient and you are allowed to take your drink into the show with you, so no need to rush that beverage, and gives you something to do when you show up early.
Plenty of great places nearby on Belmont to have a bite/​drink as well.
Parking, plenty of meter spots, and a really nice pay garage within walking distance. Tip — If you use the pay garage, be sure to take your parking ticket with you or else you will not be able to get back into the garage.
Taking public transport? The blue line Belmont stop is within easy walking distance as well.
We came to see the production of Sweeney Todd and it was one of the best I have seen. Bravo to all involved, but especially to Mrs Lovett who steals the show and your heart. Tickets tip — if offered, get discounted tickets from Goldstar.

Went to see Cupid Has a Heart On last night on a bit of a whim. I’ve walked by this place 1000 times and never been inside, and I’d seen some positive reviews for this long-​running show.
Overall, fantastic show and hilarious. The audience was laughing non-​stop for most of it, and the musical talent of the group is great. To avoid some awkwardness, I would highly recommend not going with a parent or with an adult child (the last number is about how your parents still do it all the time). Fortunately I didn’t, but I can only imagine. Ticket price is a little steep at $ 22 but this beats most other comedy I’ve seen in Chicago except probably Second City. The atmosphere in the lobby is great too, if you get there early and want to sit for a drink.

Came from LA to chicago for the week and found that this place was hosting The Windy City Burlesque show, so i had to attend!
Looks like a small place from the outside, but the inside is big! Cool little bar inside with a variety of drinks. A stage with vendors and the stage for the shows were big.
Great show! Best i’ve been to!
After the show, it was nice to mingle in the hall with pastries and snacks!
Valet is quick and cheap.

Came here on Friday night for the preview of «We 3 Liza’s». As my note stated my daughter in law plays Liza was. A perky 1970’s party girl Liza Minnelli. To go into the musical would be a long explanation so I will try and give the Cliff Notes version.
Conrad Tickelbottom invented a box inspired by Andy Warhol. Conrad’s box has run it course and he needs help. So 3 witches come and cast a spell on him and he has visions very similar to Ghost of Christmas Past. The three Liza’s try and get Conrad back on track with some amount of success. Ok it is far out I know. If you are wanting to see a fresh musical check out the 3 Liza’s the run will be short just through Christmas.
