This was our first experience with lamb barbacoa and it was pretty damn good. We waited about 10 minutes for a table on a Sunday morning around 11. We didn’t know, but you can make reservations online, which I would recommend because it’s usually pretty busy. Being first timers, our server was very helpful, briefly describing the cooking process and recommending that we get a large order of the lamb barbecue plate. Our plate included a half pound of the«meat»($ 12.35, choice cuts of lean meat), a cup of lamb broth(we ordered an extra cup so we each could have one), tortillas, salsa, lime, cilantro, and onion. The wait was short and we dove right in. The lamb was fall apart tender. The meat shredded like a pork butt, but was a touch leaner and firmer to the analogous pork equivalents. This is where the consume comes into play as it will add moisture and even more flavor. I could of eaten another order or two by myself, but we needed to go with a five hour drive ahead and I didn’t want any headlines reading that a man had fallen asleep at the wheel and drove his car off the Cajon Pass with 3 pounds of lamb barbacoa in his stomach. Another trip is definitely warranted to try the other cuts of meat from the lamb and to give the quail, rabbit, or grasshoppers a try.

They have the best barbocoa here! This is the only place that has good quail! It’s grilled and comes with lamb broth! Their consumé is the best! There’s always a crowd as the dining room is small so come when it’s not lunch or dinner hours.

Love the friendly staff who always take the time to say hello to us and to our daughter. The owner is really nice as well and I love that everyone seems happy to be there and enjoys their job. Food is always delicious and always prompt, and the menu has some awesome items that are nearly impossible to find elsewhere. Five stars every time!

got the lamb barbecue tacos because i remember tasting it at the SD reader’s fest a couple months back, however, the tacos doesn’t seem to have consistent quality. the ones i tried in the shop today wasn’t nearly as good as the last time i had it. also, the service was slow. However, the owner was nice, but with many other great tacos place nearby, the place has got some serious competition

Are you down for some Mexican food but not up to your usual Taco Bell or other traditional taco shop here in rainy San Diego? Try Aqui es Texcoco! I like this restaurant. It’s not expensive and you can get a different flavor of Mexico. They specialize in Barbacoa style, which involves slow roasting their meat for that oh so delicioso taste! I’ve been here three times and each time they don’t disappoint. The customer service is good, and if you go at the right time, it won’t be as packed. Down for some chicken? Boring. But they have it. How about some lamb? Now we’re talking. They have that too. Rabbit? Hell yeah. They have that too! Grasshoppers!?! Are you serious? No they don’t. Sike! They have grasshoppers too! WTF? Dog? Nah, I think that’s where they draw the line, but don’t be surprised if another restaurant down the road has that. I’ve tried each of those except the rabbit. But I’ll be trying that next time, along with brain tacos. Yeah, I said brain. The only thing I wasn’t a fan of was the Huitlacoche, but it was worth trying. If you order the grasshoppers, you won’t finish it. Well I didn’t at least. I wonder where they get so many? Well, go check this place out for yourself. It’s worth it!

This place is overrated !! I was there to have the famous borrego it sucks(if u know how is done correctly) !! The broth was almost plain water no flavor just color ! And the service seriously horrible !! I live in north county and honestly the place in vista is 10 x better than this crap I would not come back to this place !! I think only the tortillas is worth the lonely start!

very good lamb barbacoa. super tender and great flavor but they could do a better job removing some of the bones in a bite, or diners can be a little gentler when it comes chewing but why would we have to. the flan was also good in taste and sauce with little to no bubble holes. would’ve gotten more than 3 stars but those bones.

Service was a bit slow. but it was packed with only 2 people waiting on everybody but they always had a smile and were nice. We got the Medittrainian style lamb, it came with Pita Bread and a yogurt sauce in the side. They also brought condiments to the table which consisted of fresh onions and cilantro, pickled onions and limes, and 2 hot sauces. It came with a soup as well.

There was a bug in my taco. A toasted, crunchy, lemony insect that tasted salty, sour, and amazing. But besides the awesome chapulin tacos, the main attraction is BARBACOA. Honestly, not even Einstein with his theory of relativity could explain the delicious intricacies involved in the craft of making barbacoa(Im tempted to call it BBQ, but that would do you –dear reader– a diservice). Its basically a slow-cooked red meat, tender, juicy, and brought to perfection in a traditional earth dug hole, where its cooked by an open fire. Its glorious. Pair it with some pulque, the ancient Mexican drink the Mayas, Mixtecs, and Aztecs used to get wasted with. Its delicious. Its not beer, so dont go there expecting it to taste like IPAs(damn hipsters, although IPAs are pretty good). Its a fermented drink derived from maguey plants. Its strong, bitter, cold, and awesome. Salud!

Grilled cheese lamb tacos… I’m not even a lover of lamb but I am now a believer that this place was heaven sent! While visiting San Diego we were on the hunt for some good tacos and nowhere delivered until we tried Aqui Es Texacoco. I have never in my life had meat so tender and full of flavor, nor have I had a taco shell made of grilled cheese. Combined, this made for the absolute best experience my mouth has ever encountered(aside from red wine lol)… Words truly can’t describe how delicious the food is and how amazing the service is!

I almost never write Unilocal reviews so for me to be moved enough to write one is my greatest compliment. I implore everyone within the sound of my voice to go here and order a lamb’s head. It is quite simply one of the best things I’ve ever eaten.(See picture) Juicy, tender, delicious, falls off the bone. Not the slightest bit of gamey flavor. I was expecting some when I ate the tongue and eyes but it was never gamey. Instead when combined with tortillas, fresh cilantro, and an assortment of sauces, it can only be described as groin grabbingly transcendent. It is $ 18.50 at the time of this writing and definitely big enough for two, but I ate the whole thing myself because I am a man of might and consequnce. Also, we ordered a few more dishes and everything else there is above par. Highly recommend.

I could blame the jingle that gets stuck in my head for hours, but who am I kidding, this place would be memorable on its own with one taste of that tantalizing lamb broth. When our server set it down in front of me, my first impression was the heady aroma. It was intoxicating. Once I tasted it, I was hooked. It’s delicious, it has a nice spice to it, and a rich lamb flavor. Even better, there were pieces of lamb and lots of garbanzo beans in there. Definitely perfect for those days when you have a hangover, not that that ever happens to any of us, right guys? Aqui es Texcoco is located in a strip mall on Broadway St between L St and Naples, close to the 5 in Chula Vista. There is plenty of parking. It does get busy, so be prepared. I noticed a table outside with a sign in sheet for table seating. We hit it at just the right time though because they had one table available and it was busy the entire time we were there. This is the home of the famous lamb barbacoa. They do serve chicken, pork belly, lamb brains, potatoes, bean and cheese, grasshoppers, ect. I came for the lamb barbacoa. I’m sure next time I’ll try other items. And make no mistake, there will be a next time. The lamb barbacoa was everything it promises and then some. It’s tender and flavorful. I ate my lamb taco first without any sauce to taste the meat properly, taking a page from fellow Unilocaler Randy B. It was wonderful. I did end up adding a little of the marinated onions for crunch and a tiny drizzle of the hot sauce, not because the meat needed any flavor, but because I just love hot sauce. The lamb sope was also very good. I maybe should’ve started with this one because of the beans, it got a little messy halfway through, but I didn’t mind, still tastes the same. Last thing I ate was the lamb flauta, and was amazingly crunchy for having sat on my plate for so long! I’m a slow eater :). It was just like it had just been fried. It was also very good. I liked it with their green sauce, it gave it a nice acidity. I can’t take credit for the recommendation though, Walter M ate his first and told me to try it that way, he was right. One thing I will do next time though is order my food with no lettuce. Everything came covered in lettuce and it was just too much. It’s a personal preference though. It made my flauta and sope get a little soggy and it just gets in the way of everything. The kids meals here are nice too. They have a good selection of offerings and the sides are healthy. You can choose fresh seasonal fruit, yogurt, or rice. My son is notoriously picky and he was able to find something he likes here and ate it all. Lastly the service is good. We were greeted immediately and given a table. Our server was friendly and helpful. Our food came out fast, and she checked on us just often enough. She never tried to rush us with anything. The prices here are really good in my opinion. I’m a pretty good eater and I was really full on the combo meal I ordered which was under nine dollars and I barely finished it.

Wow! This was an experience, not just a meal! You have to try the grasshoppers! They come lightly fried & limey! Whoo! You can’t eat to many all at once though, the lime seasoning is amazing but gets intense when you eat a bunch. I sprinkled the grasshoppers all over my food like salt. It added a fantastic flavor. Two of us shared the lamb barbacoa plate with«meats & ribs». The lamb was a tad bit dry but delicious. It comes with onion/cilantro, salsa verde, & corn tortillas. They also brought out two cups of the lamb broth soup! That was amazing. Probably my favorite dish. It has garbanzo beans & onions in it. We also ordered the 3 quail plate. The quail comes split in half, marinated, & roasted. The final order we tried was the fried cheese. It comes out like a huge waffle cone. It’s the perfect tortilla substitute if you’re going grains or carbs free… I got a glass of their homemade horchata. It was perfect. Not too sweet & just enough cinnamon. Now here is the best part; the waitress came out to say hi when she saw my 2 Labs in the back of the truck! The restaurant was busy & she is the only waitress but she’s GOOD! She had time to come out give my dogs some sweet talking & get back to her customers.(Don’t worry she went straight to the sink to wash her perfectly manicured hands). She didn’t miss a beat, showed us to our table & took our drink order & came right back to get our dinner order. The food came out very fast & at the perfect pace. We didn’t want for a thing. She even gave us a doggie bag of bones!

We went there today upon the advice of a friend. We had also seen the Restaurant featured on Bizarre Foods on the Travel Channel. Parking: Aqui esta Texcoco is located in a Strip Mall on Broadway. We arrived at 1:30PM on a Friday and parking was tight, so I can imagine it would not be possible to find parking during peak times. Service: We were immediately greeted, seated and served. The waiter was friendly and explained the different kinds of lamb they serve: lean, rib meat, brains and meat off the head of the lamb. This is what the Restaurant specializes in, so it would be lame to order chicken or beef here which they do have. Kind of like ordering chicken tenders in a steak house. Food: On the advice of the waiter, I opted for 1⁄3 pound of lean lamb with corn tortillas so I could make my own Tacos. They brought lime, onion and cilantro and several salsas to put on the tacos. There was enough meat for five tacos. The green salsa was really hot, just the way I like it. My better half ordered a combination plate also with lean lamb which consisted of a flauta, a taco, sope and an enchilada. First they brought us some Lamb Consome. This is an acquired taste, quite strong, and well lamby. Tasted fresh though, but neither of us could finish it. — Here I must pause to note that neither of us is a big lamb eater. We’re more into poultry and fish. — The lean lamb meat was very good, fresh and very tender. It could easily be cut with a fork, but for both of us it was just a bit too much lamb. Total damages for the both of $ 29.45 plus tip. Generous amounts of food. The Verdict: If you like lamb, go here, the food is fresh, well made and the service is very good and efficient. The restaurant is clean and bright. It’s just that lamb isn’t our scene, but if it is your’s you’ll love it. The things I did not like were the TV, the loud dance music and the restroom could have been cleaner. Parking could be a challenge.

The way they cook the lamb here should come with a warning because one bite and it will drive you insane. Or to put it in simpler words, the lamb at Aqui ES Texcoco is «Slap you’re momma» good. I was taken with this place after watching an episode of Bizarre Foods on the travel channel. The segment highlighted the owner and how he prepares meat the traditional South American way,(slow cooked and prepared in a cauldron placed under ground for hours). So after seeing it and hearing that they specialize in Lamb(my favorite type of meat) I had to put this as a go to location. So once we arrived My wife and I ordered the speciality of cooked lambs head. That’s right an entire lambs head cooked whole with all the fixings, including the brains. At first I hesitated at the thought of tasting brains but I’m so glad I tried it. Some advice: Great brains should be moist but a little gamey. They should have a slight velvety smooth texture with a distinct flavor profile. They paired the lamb meat with warm tortillas, onions, cilantro and special sauces, some with spice. I wish I had enough time to try all the different options on their menu. From what I’ve seen you can’t go wrong with any of them and thats including the cricket tacos. Although The location isn’t large it still holds a good amount of people. The staff are friendly and definitely work hard at taking care of the customers. I personally can’t wait to go back and try something new.

Not a ton of options for a vegetarian(duh), but the bean and cheese enchiladas were great. I’d definitely get them again. The chicarron de queso was insane — the photo in the menu makes it look like it will be small, but in real life it is enormous. An enormous, rolled up, piece of fried cheese — like the stuff that seeps out and gets toasty on a grilled cheese sandwich. Delish. They also have some craft beers from Mexico, which you can’t find at other places very easily, including Cucapa. They had at least one other Mexican craft brewery, but I can’t think of it now. Fair prices, and the staff was very friendly and helpful.
