Places like Home Depot and Lowe’s became the go to for most people’s home improvement projects, putting the«Mom and Pop» hardware stores out of business over the years. I guess Doppes didn’t get that memo because they are going on 150 years in business! I grew up with parents that owned their own business and I actively try to support others like them. I went to Doppes for a gallon of paint, but discovered they offer a vast selection of building materials and supplies. The Pro’s — The staff are friendly, experienced, and knowledgeable — Affordable, competitive pricing — The service of a local company — All purpose hardware store — It’s where the pros go The Con’s — Only one location(Queensgate/Downtown) — The«Old Boys Club» vibe may scare off the weekend warrior — Some of the brands are not household names Like I mentioned above, I went in for a gallon of house hold paint. They carry Martin Senour Paints, which have been around for close to 100 years as a dealer supported brand. The big box stores carry brands that are exclusive to their stores, so you won’t find Behr or Valspar, but you will find brands that are just as good, if not better. The price was actually cheaper than the box stores too! Don’t let the contractors, and work trucks scare you off. Make this your first destination next time you have a home improvement project and support a local company!

Headed to Doppes one day during my lunch break to pick up a tape measure. I was in need and this place was close. Either way, upon walking in I could tell this place was not for amateurs. As Tony S mentioned in his review, its a bit more old time but no less functional. In fact, when walking in there were quite a few professionals checking out and even what looked like an interior designer. If that is the case, then I know this is legit. Just to give you a run down of what they stock, a lot of the fluff products they simply don’t have. You want paint, go somewhere else. You need anything related to pluming, wiring or framing, head here.

This is a great«old school» lumber yard. Its only a couple of blocks from 8th St, so its really convenient to downtown. They carry a complete line of hardware, paint, lumber & drywall. The employees are experienced and have been able to answer all my questions.
