Wow, the price of snake oil has gone up.
I’m almost embarrassed to write this because it will prove that I went into this place. Look, I was looking for lemon grass oil to bait beehives with — honest! But while there I had a look around. I was horrified.
Look, I understand the impulse. I’m an office worker. I sit on my posterior all day, every day. I eat too much food whose redeeming value is quick and cheap. A year ago I had a health issue that I feel like I never have recovered from. But my health problems — aside from age — are caused by two things: a lack of movement and the consuming of too much garbage food. That’s it. It isn’t from a lack of supplements. As my doctor told me once, we vitamin fortify our doughnuts in the this country, for gawd’s sake.
The store was bright and clean and the shelves were full of well-organized…stuff. That’s the good part. I guess.
The clerk was helping another guy when I walked in. I poked around looking for my lemon grass oil. I waited. Then waited a bit more. Then the most irritating thing happened. The phone rang. The clerk ditched the customer he was helping — the guy that actually walked in and was going to buy something — to answer the phone. I hate that. He did acknowledge me after he took the call and returned to his guy. When he did get to me and was able to tell me he was out of stock he did call the store down the street. Wait! That’s good. What would have been better is if he’d asked me what I wanted it for. Nope.
I guess what bothers me is the cloak of ‘health’ this place puts on. And the expense. The health claims seem specious — at best. I looked agog at the prices and realized that for the cost of muscle building powder or weight loss juice or a good colon cleansing agent a nearby poor family could eat fairly healthy. That bothers me.
Look, if you feel like crap then go for a long walk, eat better, but mostly just realize no matter what that you’re going to get older and you’re going to fall apart and someday die. There’s no supplement around that. And if you happen to see a place that sells lemon grass oil, let me know.
