Sprout Market & Eatery

My review is similar to a lot of others. Great food, but poor service. Two of us dined their during lunchtime. It wasn’t crowded but took over 30 minutes to receive our food and I had to approach the single server to try to pay my bill. It was a strange service environment they might have been understaffed but I don’t think that was the issue.
I had the turkey and cranberry sandwich, which was delicious. My friend had the Bok choy which he spoke very highly of.
My recommendation would be to maybe skip lunch, as they don’t seem to put a ton of energy into things, and maybe try the dinner.

With a name like Sprout, these vegetarians had high hopes for a quality brunch following a fun morning at the Krohn Conservatory. We walked into this beautiful, light-​filled space and, well, we waited. We stood in the entry for several minutes with no clue how or where to proceed. Finally, I walked up to the bar where I managed to get the attention of one of the women behind it. I asked if it was self-​seating and was told yes, but that there were no tables open.
So, we took seats at the bar and got ourselves menus from a pile at the corner. The menu was fairly brief with mainly egg dishes. My friend opted for the yogurt bowl with homemade granola and fruit ($ 7). She also got a gluten free, corn cake with honey drizzle ($ 3 a la carte). Both were tasty, but the corn cake definitely beat out the yogurt bowl which wasn’t all that for the price.
I had previously looked at the menu online and was hoping to get the green goddess salad, alas it was not offered. Neither were several other things listed on the website’s brunch menu. I finally went for the homemade biscuits with local preserves ($ 3) and an adult, root beer float with bourbon ice cream ($ 9).
One of the three servers, they worked round robin style, brought a small coffee cup and said they had run out of ice cream. She offered me a free sample of a tablespoon or so that was left with some root beer on top. Would have loved if they had been able to do the regular size.
The two biscuits were very flaky, but needed some jazzing up. After asking for butter and honey to go with them, I waited almost ten minutes before they were brought out. I understand a busy brunch hour, but really? When it was time to leave, it was once again a waiting game to pay. Everyone working was quite nice, but they need a better system or more people as we weren’t the only customers who had a problem with pacing.

We went here for brunch on a Saturday. $ 5 mimosas are a good way to kick it off. The brunch items are great. The crab frittata is legit, and the egg and cheese sammy was tasty also. The staff here is very friendly and welcoming.

Sigh* Let me first start off by saying that the food is excellent. The bread was ever so lightly brushed with olive oil and salt… it was perfect. The caesar salad was delish… even the soft croutons. The cubano… yummo. It’s definitely the best food in Mt. Adams.
What I can’t get behind is the poor service. The service reallllllly lacked. When we arrived tonight the place had about 4 – 5 tables seated with no one seated at the bar. We were seated immediately and given menus. We ordered beverages and placed our order. I’m not sure where the breakdown happened but then our waitress never came back to check on us. Another woman served us our meal and left. The woman that initially waited on us kept visiting a different table and completely forgot about us. I’m assuming that they were her friends because she kept running her hands through the hair of one of the people dining. She happened to walk past our table so we asked for another beer, which we never got. We actually asked the other woman to get it once we realized we had been forgotten. We waited for the check and after waiting so long, I decided to just go up to the bar and ask for it. The food was really good but the service is definitely lacking.

I went back to Sprout with my boyfriend to give it another shot after the owner left me a friendly and sincere message on Unilocal,which I really appreciated. I want to love this place and what it stands for, but I still can’t justify a 4-​star rating. Based on my experiences, maybe 3.5 stars would be fitting.
The mussels were good, not amazing, but I liked them. The braised chicken thigh was actually a very good dish that we both enjoyed. The stuffed pork loin sous vide was weird. The girl at the bar (where you order) told us that we could order it hot or cold, but she’s had it cold and it’s good. Being the adventurous type, I decided to try it cold. Maybe I should’ve gone with a safer choice and ordered a sandwich instead! My boyfriend really didn’t like the refrigerated pork, and I thought it was interesting but not something I would ever crave or order again. I did like the broccolini it came with though.
Service was generally good and our waitress was friendly. At one point, she opened a window right next to me. I was already cold and this made it worse. I couldn’t close the window (because my arms are so weak lol) so my boyfriend and I switched seats — not a huge deal. Then we were asked to move to a different table not once, but twice, because a band was coming in to set up where we were sitting (and our second table was too close to their speakers). Again, not a huge deal.
To make it up to us, our waitress threw in a free dessert — lucky us! The lemon goat cheese gelato sounded so good to me… And it might have been good except it was served too frozen and had ice crystals throughout, giving it a freezer burn texture. Not the way gelato, ice cream, or even sorbet should taste. :(
I’m sure I’ll eat at Sprout again someday, but this experience just did not make me all that excited to come back. Compared to the other restaurants in Mt. Adams, Sprout is definitely a good choice for a nice meal, but the rest of Cincinnati has so many other options for great dining that is better executed. Still a solid 3 stars from me… until the next time!

Friday night friends and I stopped by Sprout after Art After Dark at the CAM, I heard good things about sprout, we walked in and sat at one of the long high top tables as there were 3 of us and possibly expecting a few more friends.
As we sat down I was facing the bar and looking over their craft beer selection with local, regional and national craft beers, I saw Urban Artifact, the new sour craft brewery in Northside, so wanted to try their beer, which was a Key Lime Gose beer, perfect on a Friday night.
We were hungry so we were ready to order food right away, I went with the turkey sandwich, which my friend Amy also selected & her boyfriend went with the trout sandwich. We also ordered the 16 Bricks Breads which arrived warm, toasty and melted with butter, nice simple treat.
Our food came within minutes of ordering, turkey was good, friends boyfriend raved about the trout and two more friends came in saw his sandwich & ordered the same thing. We had good conversation, the only issue is when we we’re ready to leave, trying to find our server to pay the bill. Found out you have to go to the bar to ask for your tab.
Sprout welcome addition to Mt Adams with healthy fresh food with the right beer & wine.

Reunited with an old friend from BITD for brunch at Sprout.
It was a rather humid day, drizzling rain, but we were troopers.
The spot was somewhat empty, the hosts were very nice.
I had just finished a morning workout and was starving so I zeroed in on the Egg and Cheese Sammy and got the Yogurt Bowl. Delicious.
Not sure if its even on the menu any more, but my friend got the Vegetarian Chili. She seemed to love it because she make quick work of it. She was apparently hungry too after her Fitness Bootcamp.
Great spot.
Got to Sprout for a tasty after workout meal! And enjoy ALL the scenery. :)

I have been here several times and am always pleased! A few of the delicious things to try are the mussels (delicious broth you want to just drink), cheese plate featuring several local cheeses and dried fruit, and the grilled cheese. I was just here the other day for a drink and tried one of their house-​made shrubs. The drink was a grapefruit/​orange shrub (vinegar-​based) with soda and I chose to add tequila. Tangy, fruity, and beautifully colored!

We have visited Sprout 3 times now and able to give review. This is a welcome and amazing addition to Mount Adams. It is a complete redo of the space and really well done. The space is a huge draw setting great ambiance for either a fun dinner or drinks. I like that it can swing either way.
The menu is interesting and has changed already. The chef grew the celery root that went into a very different cabbage soup. We eat Vegan and they accommodated us easily. But plenty of carnivore options that looked great.
The three owners WORK IT! It is off to a great start brining a little OTR food feel to Mt Adams.

This is much needed in Mt Adams. Not only a market selling high quality local food, but a bar, eatery, and lounge in one.
The main part of the establishment is at ground level and is open and full of light. The two walls that aren’t the bar are floor to ceiling windows so you can totally scope the street scene. The tables are a mix of larger communal tables and smaller «date» tables. The entire interior was designed by the owner and incorporates a good deal of vintage reclaimed local barn wood.
You walk to the bar to order food and they will bring it to your table. Even though they are busy on weekend nights, it’s not a long wait for a spot and for food. All the food is prepared fresh from local farm CSA. As a result, some menu items can sell out, so some flexibility is required.
They serve many varieties of local beer. They also have a selection of organic wines.
On Friday and Saturday nights, there is a lounge bar downstairs at Roots which has live music. It’s very cosy and swanky. They list the bands and dates on their Facebook page.
They are brand new. There may be some growing pains or intermittent sell out of certain items. However, this is to be expected with the concept they are bringing which is local and organic. I think this integrity of purpose is worth any perceived inconvenience. The owner and staff are top notch and the spot is a great place to meet up and chill.

With this onomatopoeia I have to express how I felt about the price to food worth I experienced today.
I really like this place, it is a good and very needed addition to somehow diminishing food&bar scene in Mount Adams. There is nothing not to like about the ambience: simple, clean, eco and pleasant.
The food is tasty and prepared from locally supplied ingredients. However, the portions are quite small and it seems like it might be a better lunch than a dinner spot.
My husband and I enjoyed the house made tomato fettuccine and risotto with vegetables, but the portions were more of a lunch size and left us hungry and a bit disappointed. Since there was not much more on the Sprout’s menu that would do for a dinner, we had to grab a burger at the near Bar&Grill afterwards :)
Taking into account that you order the food and pay at the bar (so there is no real service), I do not feel like the price/​value ratio is justified. Even today’s special that I did not try, but saw on neighboring tables, was called ‘Crab cakes’ and it was basically one cake with a tiny side of risotto.
Felt like Gargantua and Pantagruel in there today :) Maybe it’s just us…

Sprout was enjoyable quaint cute very modern with some history attached to the restaurant bar/​grocery/​store. I fell in love with the healthy & fresh food options such a wonderful thing for the Mt. Adams area.
This establishment offered some amazing Mussels & spinach artichoke dip on top of an amazing bar on the upper and lower level. The décor of this spot is very unique and decorated very nicely this is a spot for all ages. We thank you for opening in the Mt. Adams area. I can’t wait to visit again.

I had thought if I should review or should not for this place. I am glad to see Mt Adams got a cool concept restaurant/​bar.
But on my first experience at Sprout, love atmosphere and décor, music there was really well selected. The server was nice, but it was strange that she also got on computer sitting at the bar while she was working. Maybe she got business to do. My lunch was $ 15 which I think it was decent price not get service as cafeteria. Just weird.
This place got a lot of good local beer selections. Foods were just fine.

Great Food and awesome atmosphere!
Sprout is a great new spot in the heart of Mt. Adams. It has a quaint atmosphere with dim lighting that’s great for dates and conversation. They have Great Mussels and asparagus risotto. I’m not usually an asparagus fan but their asparagus risotto is an exception. Live music in the lounge below is also a plus! Looking forward to taking my gf here!

Sprout is amazing. Delicious, locally-​sourced food, and a pretty good selection of beers on tap. I usually stop in for brunch on weekends, and the steel cut trout is my absolute favorite thing on the menu. For lunch, I’m a big, big fan of the scallops. All things considered, the pricing is very fair as well.
Best of all, the service is awesome. We live down the street, and Sprout always helps us out by selling veggies and herbs that we may need — even if they don’t carry it in the market, they will get it from the kitchen for you. No mark-​ups, either. Can’t recommend them highly enough.

Sprout is a cute space. It’s also small and with limited seating, can get crowded.
I came here with a co-​worker for lunch. We waited a while and were finally offered menus. After more excessive waiting, we ordered our lunch. I had the eggplant sandwich and she opted for the mushroom risotto and a bowl of soup. My co-​worker got her soup with her meal. Although our bartender didn’t bother to ask how our food was, or offer refills, we both enjoyed our meals.
Long story short, the food is great, the service isn’t.

Wow, what a gem! We’d heard from our friends that they had some odd experiences with coming here and finding the kitchen closed, but everything seemed to be operating normally when we decided to visit.
I got the roasted vegetables (delicious! and I’m not usually a summer squash fan — though not sure where they got summer squash in January), and the side of bread which was a nice balance between crunchy and chewy (and good for sopping up the veggie juice). The highlight of the meal was definitely dessert — my fiancé and I split the challah bread pudding and the coffee stout ice cream. Both were stellar, and I don’t think we were able to decide which one was better.
Decent wine and beer selection, and a cute little side room selling some food goods. You order at the bar, and they bring the food out to you when it’s done.

Following my last experience at Sprout we received an honest message from the owner encouraging us to come back to give Sprout a second try. I can 100% say I’m so glad we did — they nailed it.
We were immediately greeted and received great service from the bartender. I tried the Reuben on gluten free bread and my fiancé had the Beemster grilled cheese. If you can make sandwiches feel like a real dinner — not just a simple sandwich — you’re doing something right. My bread was grilled golden, the corned beef was super tender, and they serve a great mustard with their sandwiches that I am guessing is house made. We also shared a 50 west coffee please beer that was delish. One of my favorites was the hen of the woods chips. We’ve grabbed these to go in other places around Cincy so it was a great treat with the meal.
I tried to think if there was something I would change about the meal and there really wasn’t. It hit the spot and has won us back. Which with items I’m dying to try like Imushroom risotto and coffee stout icecream I’m so glad.

This review is for Roots, the newly-​opened bar and jazz club in the basement of Sprout. Get it. Roots…clever huh!?! The space downstairs can only be described as «swanky»…Super swanky! Have I said «swanky» enough? Low-​lighting and couches set the perfect ambience alongside the live jazz that’ll knock your socks off. Cocktails range from $ 7 and up and my Gin and Tonic was delicious; not watered down and great quality. I wish there was more seating available, but then you would sacrifice the intimacy of the small space. Check this place out, now!

I’m from Minneapolis, and Sprout felt just like home! I went on opening weekend, and was glad to see there was a place that wasn’t a sports bar in Mt. Adams. They’ve got wine and a good selection of beer available. Such a cute ambiance, and a good crowd! They play some really good music too, in the realm of the Passion Pit Pandora station. We went on a Saturday night and there was a bluegrass band playing downstairs later in the night!
They’ve got some sandwiches and the like on their food menu, though my friends and I didn’t try it (we just came from dinner across the street!). Even though we stopped in around 8:30pm, it seems like a great place for a lunch date or a laid back night. Either way, I’ll definitely be back!
