The Pig & Whistle Sports Pub

Because I live nearby, we visit the Pig and Whistle often. The food is decent and moderately priced. I especially love their boneless wings and the pretzel bites with beer cheese. My vegetarian friends have always been able to find something delicious to eat as well. The biggest draw for us, besides a convenient location, is their beer selection. Make sure to check out their wall of beer!
At least once a semester, a group of classmates and I go to the Pig and Whistle to celebrate surviving another semester, etc. It is spacious enough to accommodate a large group and our service is usually good. If you visited this location when it was Mulligan’s, it is almost the same. The menu is slightly different (in a good way) and they painted the building a gaudy blue color.

I haven’t been here since they’ve changed from Mulligans (which was not my favorite place to begin with). When Miami Alumni decided to host a Miami University Hockey watch party here on a Saturday afternoon, I decided to meet a few friends to watch the game and have a few drinks.
My first impression was that the only change the new owners (assuming they are new owners) made was to paint the entire place blue. Blue? The only reason I can think of to paint a place a depressingly dark color is to hide the dirt, but it failed in even that. I don’t think the bathrooms have been cleaned in several months.
The layout is exactly the same: a giant covered patio with dead leaves hovering in the corners, a back room where the bathrooms are, the decently-​sized bar area, and another weird «back room» with a few tables. They still have their Wall of Beer (bartenders have to use a ladder to get to the top taps… woohoo).
The drinks were moderately priced, $ 3.75 for 20 oz domestic drafts and $ 4.75−5.75 for imports. The menu was typical bar food… apps, burgers, wraps, etc. We went for the «irish nachos,» because they feature tater tots. Who doesn’t love tater tots? Why haven’t they replaced french fries yet… moving on. The irish nachos were delicious tater tots topped with some very un-​tater totty toppings. Black beans and rice? Tomatoes? Onion? Olives? I would have loved the appetizer if it had simply been tator tots with cheese and bacon, with ranch or sour cream to dip them in. As they were, they were pretty good, but if you have the ingredients on hand, why not put a more traditional take on the menu as well as the «fusion»?
I probably won’t be back any time soon, the menu didn’t have me drooling to try something else. But the owners seemed very nice and ready to help out frazzled bartenders, so you should at least check it out for a happy hour beer.

I checked out the Pig & Whistle for the first time last night to catch the UConn game (GO HUSKIES!). My first impression was of the bizarrely disorganized parking lot and the generally unimpressive (but large) back patio. Perhaps the patio would be more impressive when there were actually people on it. For now, it was just… kind of gross.
The inside of the bar was classic sports bar: high ceilings, lots of crowded tables, and televisions everywhere you look. They have an impressive selection of decently-​priced beers on tap, and a menu that nicely divides those beers up according to style (American Pale Ale, Stout, Lager, etc). The set up behind the bar looked pretty sweet – taps so high there was a sliding ladder for the bartender to pull pints from the top row.
I, however, didn’t sit at the bar. I sat in the raised seating area in the main room. From my table, I had an easy view of about six televisions. Perfect for watching the game. Also, the bar seemed to be packed with people who were there to watch the basketball, so when we got there (as the Florida-​Butler game was ending), it was rowdy and exciting. I hate going to a sports bar where people appear uninterested in the sports – this is certainly not the case at the Pig & Whistle. There was screaming, whistling, hootin & hollerin of all sorts. It made for a very exciting venue to watch the games in.
That said: recognize that this is not an ideal place for a quiet date, or even for a long conversation. You go here to watch sports. Period.
While the place was packed, we had pretty decent and regular table service, which was nice. The food was also quite decent. I ordered the black bean burger and it was delicious and satisfying. Some of my friends ordered the pretzel bites with beer cheese and the chicken caesar salad – both found their food very satisfying.
The bar also has a large second room with a huge projection screen, which would certainly be fun for a big game. All in all, it’s a good, solid sports bar, and I’ll be back for more UConn basketball soon.

Decent spot to catch a game and have a beer. Had the ½ Pork/​½ Chuck with american which has really good. Not overcooked. Fries were ok, but beer were a little warm, but it was a really busy Friday. The reason it loses a couple stars is the fact that the bathroom was disgusting. Toilets over flowing and no employee seemed to deal with it cause was still that way on a return trip 45 min later. We are not on a college campus. I would have expected more. TVs also could have been in better locations. They seem really spread out so was constantly swiveling in my chair to catch multiple game when not seated at bar. Our waitress was also having a off night and was not that attentive. It was basically just your average sports bar. Would go back but wont be first on my list.

Pig & Whistle took over the space where Mulligans was on Madison in Hyde Park/​Oakley near Rookwood. I stopped by to check it out and was glad to see they still had their «Wall of Beers» with a pretty decent selection of the most common beers as well as 5 – 10 popular craft beers.
Happy hour has $ 2 domestics, discounts on wine, wells and draft beers, and $ 2 off most appetizers (all that don’t involve pulled pork…).
Outdoor patio is huge and will be a great spot when spring comes, and the indoors is large and can accomodate large parties.

I think this place is still going through some growing pains, so I will give it the benefit of the doubt. Our bartender was very pleasant and friendly, but sometimes was a little difficult to flag down so we could order food. The wall of beers is pretty amazing and definitely a redeeming factor, especially now that you can «Climb the Wall of Beers» which basically means you have a card and if you drink all 30+ beers you get a free t-​shirt (not in one sitting though, that is just ridiculous). I had the chicken quesadillas which were nothing special. I will say that they are making a big push at having the pig part of the pig and whistle and there are a lot of pulled pork items on the menu, which apparently come from City Barbeque. My friend had the pulled pork nachos and really liked them, so maybe next time I will go for the pulled pork quesadillas and see what happens.

Decided to try to this out to see what it was like now that it isn’t Mulligan’s. Our server hovered over us until we ordered and then he disappeared. It took forever to get our bill because he was standing over at the bar chatting with his coworkers. If I had cash I would have left it on the table and walked out — something I’ve never done. The place is pretty spacious and wasn’t half full on a Friday night.
When making decisions about the menu, we asked our server because he was hovering so much he should have just sat with us and he didn’t know much about the menu items — he had to leave and ask a cook.
While my friend opted for a chicken wrap (12 hours later he was not feeling good) I went for the chicken nachos, which turned out to be a platter of mostly chips, cheese, black olives, a few tomatoes and chicken — overpriced.
Bottomline: go if you know what beer you want and have time to kill.
Hopefully they work on their service before college basketball season is in full swing, because I imagine they will only do well if they can handle the overflow crowd from BW3’s.

32 draft beers on the wall… need I say more. Also, a good selection of appetitizers… the full menu is just average. This place used to be called Mulligans Hyde Park Pub… why they changed it to the Pig & Whistle is anybody’s guess.

Gotta have the beer cheese and a Pulled Pork Quesadilla. The bartenders were not very helpful, so know what you want from the beer wall or ask for a taste.
