You know, for the longest time I thought Clackamas was an onomatopeia like «smack» or maybe the sound a duck with Tourette syndrome makes. Right. Apparently it’s not just an Oregon Native American tribe, it’s also a county & a suburb & a river. Can you tell that geography is not my best subject?
Anyhoo, when your flooring contractor sends you out to Clackamas to pick out flooring for your 104yo money pit you say, «Uh, really? M’kay.» My tragic hodophobia aside, Seaport is not somewhere you’re going to wander into off the street when the urge to spend thousands on your walking surface strikes you. It’s not cuz it’s in [gasp] the ‘burbs nor the fact that it’s in a really industrial stretch off of I-​205 nestled near the train tracks, although the line of cars waiting and waiting (and waiting) to turn at the light when the trains are running could make even Mother Theresa fantasize about extra-​thick pennies or even a kiddie ramp… Where was I again? Right, flooring. Joe PDXer & his sidekick Brittany won’t be wandering around Seaport cuz they don’t sell to the public, only contractors/​builders/​people in the business. Normally this would mean that the wholesale prices are offset by surly staff who communicate in grunts interspersed with acronyms and arcane calculations that make years of calculus seem like a fond dream. Zeb & all the guys at Seaport were very patient, friendly, & helped us find hardwoods that fit our needs (Read: spastic 85lb dog with the traction of a banana peel on wet cobblestones) & design sense or lack thereof. They even sent us home with a few different pieces of flooring so we could see what they looked like with the rest of our woodwork, no charge.
Had a few issues with availability where our original choice hadn’t left dry dock yet & wasn’t going to be available by our install date which was easily fixed with a couple trips back & more discussions with Zeb & co. We get lots of compliments on our hand-​scraped pre-​finished Siberian oak floors & Seaport carries the only prefinished flooring that our contractor feels is good enough quality to use (very minimal bevel edges & higher quality wood grades). They also carry lots of unfinished hardwood flooring for you old school traditionalists out there. At ~ 30% off retail with quality not found elsewhere I know where the new flooring downstairs is coming from. See, I’m slowly getting over my hodophobia & exploring the greater PDX metropolis… one expensive housing project at a time. [harumph.]
