In 1972, when Nick San Filippo graduated from Rutgers University, Newark, New Jersey, he had more on his mind than most of the recent graduates. He went to college after serving in the military and, at graduation, was already 30 years old with a family to support. Nick needed to make a living. He had been working part time selling mutual funds and, following his graduation, added financial planning and life insurance to his repertoire. Nick partnered with the owner of a small P-C agency. Over the next 10 years, that agency’s premium volume grew from about $ 300,000 to reach $ 5 million. Nick and his partner eventually split and took his $ 2.5 million in volume or revenues of about $ 325,000 and formed American Insurance Services (AIS) in Kenilworth, New Jersey, in 1986. The agency moved to Clark, New Jersey, in 1998.
