Elite Sunday Funday at Splitty

so, I was lucky enough to finally get +1’d to an elite event after all these years, and even better, by Vicki Vics Vixxxen L. this event were definitely worth the trip to Brooklyn on a lovely Sunday afternoon.
my first impression of Splitty when I was walking up on it from outside was it looked kinda old school diner-​ish. cool, I dig that. this conception continued as I walked inside, but with the essential addition of a bar. so they had some kind of pear-​something cider which wasn’t bad, and bloody marys. I opted for the bloody marys. they were very nice, packed with a potent punch of spice — but by the second one it’s easier palated, ifyouknowwhatimeanandithinkyoudo. =) I had three, but no spirit appeared in the mirror or whatever, but I forgot about the part where you’re s’posed to go to the bathroom and turn the lights out and chant kumbaiya or something. oh well.
I didn’t try the baos because I have this paranoia of being perceived as a pig and would much rather be deemed an alcoholic, but they did look mad tasty.
great li’l spot to have a drink, great event, and I got to see a lot of familiar faces, old and new, which was great.

Sunday Funday at Splitty has won the distinction of being the closest Elite Event to my apartment yet. I’m proud that my neighborhood apparently has its boozy weekend priorities in order: Bloody Marys first, chores or literally any other activity second.
I tried all three bloodies on hand — the classic, watermelon, and wasabi. The latter two were certainly inventive… pretty sure that was my first watermelon BM… but I’d have to say I enjoyed the tried and true classic the most. I also tried the pear cider and really enjoyed it. We also sampled some baos, which were tasty and a helpful, perhaps necessary complement to all those beverages.
Although the bar is in my neighborhood, it’s on the opposite end from me, so I hadn’t checked out the space until Sunday. The owner was hanging out and came over to chat with us for quite a while; it was interesting to hear how Splitty and some of the other local places he owns got started. I’ll have to check out this place on a normal night as well. It looks like they have free board games, which is always a plus… especially since some places charge a fee to play them.
This event was definitely a 180 from the huuuuge event at the Royal Palms, and I have to say, I think I preferred this one! Thanks to Peter and the Unilocal staff, Splitty, Ace Pear Cider, and Tito’s for making my Sun. extra fun.

The bloody marys were fantastic. I was skeptical about the watermelon ones, but the people at the bar were enthusiastic enough that I gave it a try and was pleasantly surprised. The classic was my favorite, which makes me feel a little boring, but whatever, all three options were good.
The crowning glory goes to the baos. They were really exceptional. I want them all the time. They’re the sort of thing I find myself thinking about and then reorganizing my plans so I can go to Splitty.
The space was nice, too. They really took the boat theme and ran with it — it’s fun without feeling like you’re in Disneyland or something. I’m excited for it to (maybe one day) be warm again so I can check out the backyard.

In what maybe a Unilocal first there where more vegetarian options than meat. While the pastrami bao was interesting the spicy potato and kale bao was fantastic. (the mushroom one was pretty good).
The Bloody Mary’s were fantastic, I preferred the wasabi one but watermelon was refreshing and interesting.
I really dug the space, it seems like the ultimate local bar. Excellent food, drinks, a backyard area (open in warm weather). I also found out from the very friendly owner that they have bands play here (Tuesday and Friday I believe).
I love intimate events like this and Splitty was great place to spend Sunday !!

Just what the doctor ordered… Endless amounts of booze and good times! We were invited to spend the afternoon at Splitty’s sucking back Bloody Mary’s (three flavors!), beer and pear cider and I can’t imagine a better way to spend Funday ;)
I started off with the pear cider, because, yumm. I then moved on to a watermelon Bloody Mary (hashtag no judgements) and it was surprisingly delicious! A nice take on a classic hangover cure. The wasabi was delish and as spicy as one would imagine, and the original in all it’s glory did not disappoint.
I moved on after the first couple drinks to guilty pleasures of another kind… Food! More specifically, bao’s — which is a kind of taco-​sandwich made from fluffy (corn?) tortilla. I was ecstatic that there were two vegetarian options (AND without avocado to which I am allergic) whereas I was buffalo wings and fries, standard pub fare.
So you can imagine my delight as I bit into the spicy kale and potato bao. I cannot think of anything else that is so small and yet so packed with kick (- Oh yeah, here it is:
) A spice lover myself, I was also delighted that there was sriracha nearby to dump endlessly (much to the disdain of my GI. Take that, ya’ jerk!)
The mushroom bao definitely delivered as well with it’s savory scrumptiousness lulling my insides to rest after hyper-​spice-​activity. Another Bloody Mary, please!
The owner, Ed, was very welcoming and made sure to greet all of his guests for the night. While pressing him for information, I found he has a super cool bar /​live music venue in Brooklyn I must try (Beach Candy Shop), can’t wait! Thank you to Ed, Peter D, and all my fellow Unilocalers … Especially Miss Sarit for not letting me dance on the bar no matter how hard Nadia pressured me. ;)

Bloody Mary Sunday was just what I needed!!! It was a beautiful day for a nice long walk to a cute little bar on Mrtyle Ave. The place is very casual and a pretty good size for a get together with friends. It has a long bar w/​stools fully stocked and a few booths on the opposite wall. Very surprised with the amount of seating, especially for an elite event:)
Anywho now the important stuff… Bloody Mary’sssssss!!!
Classic — was good with the traditonal taste and had a lil kick to it
Wasbi — my favorite because I like it spicy with full flavor and this delivered
Watermelon — Sooo surprised how good this tasted! Class flavor but with a very strong note of watermelon. I gave it the side eye becuase it just didn’t sound right… but it was right!!!
Buns of Delight
Pastrami — was a dream come true… it was so DeLish fulling my not heavy and it left me wanting more of them… like a six pack to take home!!!
Kale & Potato — this was a party in my mouth all the way down to my tummy… spicy curry deliciousiness!!!
Mushroom — Im not a fan of mushrooms… but my friend said it was soooo goood:)

Did anyone make a Sunday Bloody Sunday joke yet? No. Okay.
Splitty can best be described as a deconstructed Airstream trailer that also happens to be a bar and was the perfect place to spend a Sunday afternoon while the last tar-​black patches of winter slush slowly melt away.
Even if bloody marys aren’t your thing they sure make a damn good one here and served us up some very generous samples. Wasabi is not only a palette cleanser but also a hangover remover with a nice afterburn. The pastrami bao, slathered in cheese, russian dressing and a kiss of kimchi made the perfect complement too.

Just a typical Sunday event. After celebrating your friend’s 30^th surprise party on Friday, going to work the next day, running to the gym, heading to an engagement party, followed by another birthday party, you just wake up to head to a Unilocal event with Bloody Marys. Before going to a wedding later in the day of course. All of which is on about six hours sleep for the entire weekend.
Alright so it might have been a long weekend and losing that hour of sleep definitely hurt. DAMN YOU GEORGE VERNON HUDSON! But I had to still make it. I mean it’s free booze. And oh yeah… friends…
I entered and immediately got a bloody mary, the ultimate hair of the dog cocktail. Note, I hate bloody mary’s. I’m much more of a screwdriver fan for my brunch. Luckily they did have some cider but even that got to be a bit much. It was super sweet and by my fifth one I couldn’t take another sip. Luckily the super kind bartenders let me have some lagers for the rest of my time there. Thanks guys, I appreciate it.
Was walking around, chatting with people. I had to let Peter D know that Miami was having a Game of Thrones themed event. Less than a month to the première, get on it man! Sure enough ten minutes later Steph C was super cool enough to let me know about the event at the Barclays. While I was super bummed that no more tickets were left, a friend of mine posted they had two more, later that night. Score! Thanks Steph, I owe ya.
Walking back to the front I noticed a beautiful seat, in the corner, right by the sun. Was this seat covered in vomit? Had someone passed gas? Why would such a marvelous seat by open? I stopped pondering and snagged the best seat in the house. Sunlight, window, fresh air and people watching. Eventually people migrated over and had fun over there.
I also grabbed one of the last Bao sandwiches. I got the kale and it was delicious. I saw one jerk take two earlier. I would have told him off, but then the awkward scenario of seeing him every day would caused problems. It was my roommate. I let him know proper Unilocal etiquette after that move.
Had an awesome time chilling with my fellow Unilocal peeps and would like to thank the staff at Splitty. I had a great time. I look to come back and think I’ll be recommending the spot to coworkers for some post work drinks.

This is a cool spot on my old street, Myrtle. Myrtle is now flooded with restaurants and bars and sometimes it’s hard to choose and you miss out on the good ones. Thankfully, I was introduced to Splitty at this cool YEE. Very laid back, and the perfect place to start or end your evening. Try the Potato and Kale buns, my favorite of the three offered. The owner made the round and was very nice.
Glad I came out on a cold, windy Sunday. Definitely worth it.

Beautiful day for a long, leisurely walk to Clinton Hill (thanks MTA for crappy weekend service). Really liked Splitty’s retro-​looking décor. Everyone seemed really laid-​back and chill, none of the usual drinking/​feeding frenzies. The bartenders were efficiently mixing up those bloody marys. I tried the Classic and the Watermelon. Wow! The Classic packs a punch. I’ve never had a bloody mary with such vibrant flavors, it was really refreshing and yummy. Nice move on the fancy garnish, sure I’ll take a salad in my drink! The Watermelon was definitely more smooth and had less kick. Not sweet like I had imagined but very interesting and pretty good.
We also shared a couple baos. Yum! The pastrami was delicious. Tender meat, tangy sauce, melty cheese, it was a mess to eat but soo good! The mushroom was also good, but I liked the pastrami better.

Sundays tend to be a drag sometimes, but not this time. Elite Sunday Funday at Splitty was time well-​spent. I love unique spaces and Splitty is one of them. The wooden décor was different and there was a subtle feel of a retro bus. Visiting their website, there is a reference to a 1960s VW bus. I don’t get the opportunity to venture into Clinton Hill and there was no time like the present.
You can’t beat a sunny day in winter, making new friends over a game of Apples to Apples, and trying a Bloody Mary for the first time. Thought the staff was pretty cool, attentive, and professional! Thanks for hosting us Splitty and organizing the get-​together Peter D. Hello Spring!

When the weather gets nice out all I do is walk and walk and walk, lay in grassy fields, and then hope for cocktails in the sun. At least, this was as close to that as we could hope for in this crazy weather we’ve been having. I’ve been wanting to check out this spot for a long time with the allurement of a 1960’s kind of retro vibe and bao buns being on the menu and with Hawker bar now being deceased I knew inevitably I’d find my way over here. This place is awesome though and is meant to look like a VW bus. While taking in what we all thought was initially gospel music I sipped on my watermelon bloody mary, which was surprisingly spicy as hell but made with the right consistency that I like in a bloody. Normally, I’m not a huge fan because they’re so salty and heavy but this was super boozy and made just right. Though, I switched to that super delicious Pear Cider later on.
The bao buns were awesome! After my little friend Stephy P. came she inquired if she could get the Pastrami by any chance without kimchi on it and the guy was more than happy to personalize her bun. Tee hee. Personalized buns. I think my favorite was the carmelized shroom bun though with the crunchy peanuts, cilantro, and Sriracha Aioli. Sriracha is LIFE. Steph found her precious Cholula sauce and had a mind-​gasm. Then there was the Poblano Kale and Potato bun that had just the right amount of heat and savory goodness.
After socializing a bit someone found Apples to Apples and we went to town. Had a nice relaxing Sunday and really enjoyed this place. Thanks Peter D.

What can be better than baos in a canoe in the middle of Fort Greene? That’s why Brooklyn, and by extrapolation America, rock. It doesn’t have to make sense. It just has to be a bunch of awesome shit together in one spot.

«What? Is that an old Airstream?»
That was my exclamation before even entering Splitty. Yeah, so I was a vintage/​antique dealer up until last year and still kind of dabble in it (as you can tell by my not-​so-​pimped-​out profile). Plus I belong to about a jillion mid century groups so stuff like that I love! But I held my expectations as the interior doesn’t always the exterior. But it did and I’m glad. And in love.
Ok, so besides the total Airstream redo inside and out and all the cool mid century remakes, the place itself was just kind of awesome. It’s the type of place I would have totally gone to back in my youngin’ days when I’d hang out in Ft. Greene a bit too much. It was a cool space all around and the music was really good. Plus, they had board games. Which turned out to be a great way to break the ice, as Stephanie (hope I’m spelling that right) pulled out Apples to Apples and invited us to play along. I, of course, lost.
Anyway, I’m not really a Bloody Mary fan. Ok, I’m not a bloody Bloody fan at all. Nevertheless I ordered the watermelon Bloody since it sounded interesting. I really liked the way the watermelon picked it up but then the rest of the Bloody Mary kicked in and I had to hand it off to the husband. He absolutely *adores* Bloody Marys and has had too many bad ones. I heard nary a complaint from him. Bloody Mary success! I settled for the pear cider, which was really good.
I also tried a mushroom bao and pastrami boa. I live right near a really Asian neighborhood so it’s always hit or miss with fusion type places. The baos were definitely a hit. They were both different but equally good in their own way.
My only thumbs down on this event is regarding the music, which was entirely too loud. It always confuses me when a place blasts their music at social events where the intention is to mingle and talk. Oh, and boo to being a +1 yet again.

Getting up at any point before sundown on a Sunday is a difficult task, but i made the necessary sacrifice to drink bloody marys and the like with Peter D. and the BK crew, and I’m glad I did. I’m not even a Bloody Mary guy, but the watermelon one i had was rather tasty, and rather interesting as well. the best part was listening to people try it for the first time and then all say «wow…thats sooo interesting!»
Also, those baos were yummy. That potato one MIGHT have been even better than the pastrami one… they were both super yummy. I hope you guys came through and enjoyed it with us.

An event that let me show up in my jeans and pair of old chucks on lazy Sunday afternoon is a winner in my book.
«I am a bum in a sun and I am having some fun» — oh, yea.
And Splitty — oh, Splitty matched the mood perfectly — low key, no frills — just good drinks, great music and awesome company, of course.
We had brunch before the event, so those refreshing pear ciders hit the spot. Not too strong, not too sweet, just what you would want on sunny day like this one!
Still, I had to try a bite of food… Shroom Bao was delish! Great bar food to munch on while catching up with friends!!!
As usual, socializing with everyone was a blast — my good old friends, and some of you that I met for a first time in real life, but knew on Unilocal forever! Awesomeness.
Music selection was fantastic, btw. (And you peeps who promised to dance on the bar — you know I gonna hold you to that!)

Loved the décor of Splitty — with the stone seating, unique lighting, chalkboard menu behind the bar and 1960s retro feel.
The baos were delicious, with warm soft buns and the perfect amount of kick (since I am very sensitive to spice). The ace pear cider is a new favorite!
I look forward to coming back soon!

Ahh … a new year, and finally I’m making good on my promise to myself to be more social and less hermit-​esq. What better way to break the dry spell by whetting my appetite while indulging in some Sunday day-​drinking?
Splitty was the perfect venue on this lovely, surprisingly sunny Sunday afternoon. The space in the front is mostly dominated by a long bar, but there’s also some smaller booths and a few communal tables sprinkled throughout. While I was busy admiring the circular suspension lighting in-​between inhaling a delicious vegetarian mushroom bao, I did also notice the bar had some fun board games stacked in the corner. I could definitely imagine coming back here on another night with some friends for some drunken jenga (cuz i mean, put the word «drunken» in front of any game and it’s automatically 10x more fun, amiright?).
Overall, while I rarely hang out in Clinton Hill, I’d definitely pop by Splitty if I was in the area and had a hankering for some bao, booze, and debauchery.
