Sanders is a classic national brand featuring premium chocolates, dessert toppings and baked goods using original recipes dating as far back as 1875. Started by Fred Sanders in Detroit, Michigan, the brand is now owned by Morley Candy Makers, Inc., with its own rich history dating back to 1919. Sanders products like Hot Fudge, Bumpy Cake, Sea Salt Caramels and Chocolates can be found in multiple retailers across the United States, at Sanders Chocolate & Ice Cream Shops in Michigan, or online at www.sanderscandy.com.

History

Established in 1875.

The first Sanders store opened on June 17, 1875. By the 40’s and 50’s Sanders products and stores became woven into the traditions of Detroit families. Going to Sanders for a Sundae during a downtown trip, blowing out birthday candles on a Sanders cake and sharing laughs over a bowl of ice cream covered in Sanders Hot Fudge became the standard. Sanders went through tough times in the 90’s, but when Morley Candy Makers purchased the brand and its original recipes in 2002, they knew its value and started the Sanders revival! The new ownership focused on bringing back beloved Sanders products and keeping true to original recipes, while also bringing the brand into the 21st century. Packaging changes were made, new products were developed and old classics made a huge comeback! Today, there are 9 Sanders locations and our products are shipped throughout the world via our online shop.

Meet the Business Owner

Fred S.

Business Owner

A young German born Fred Sanders Schmidt arrived to Illinois, USA with his family as a toddler. Fred received his confectionary training in Germany, married, and opened his first candy store in Illinois around 1870. He called his new candy store «Sanders’. Fred Sanders Schmidt chose to use his middle name when he went into business because he did not want to appear to compete with his father, a successful baker in the same area. It is said that the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 drove Fred and his wife and young child east to the next biggest town… Detroit. Although the Sanders family no longer owns the brand, its new owner, Morley Candy Makers is proud to continue Fred’s tradition of providing customers with premium confections and exceptional service at a fair price.
