I take my wife here for date night anytime we can. The prices are super great, waiters are awesome, food is excellent! Best place to eat in C-ville by far!

Rolled into town late on a Monday after a long drive from MN and found this place on Unilocal.Reviews didn’t let me down. Quality, class, great service and excellent food at a good price. Small town America at its finest. Don’t let the exterior appearance scare you away. It’s a linen napkin nice place. I saw reviews in regards to the food being substandard. I personally disagree but I must admit I had beef. I don’t know why anyone would expect seafood to be good and fresh in WI but that’s neither here nor there. Being a West Coast native I just expect the seafood to drop in quality every mile it travels from the ocean. Order rib eye. Won’t disappoint.

Mathews Supper Club is an oasis in Clintonville. We were staying in Clintonville for the Iola antique car show and ate at Mathews two nights in a row. He makes a great martini and really knows how to take care of customers. I had a New York strip steak one night and prime rib on Saturday… both delicious and priced well. The meat quality was awesome and they were cooked to perfection. Mathews in not a gourmet fine eatery like you would find in a big city… but a cozy well managed supper club that has wonderful food and thoughtful attentive service.

I’ve only been here once, but I had a very good experience. I had not been to a «dinner club» before, but my Wisconsin-native friend explained that dinner clubs are popular in Wisconsin. The menu is broad, kind of like a diner. There is a pasta section, seafood, steaks, sandwiches, chicken, and pork. There are starters, sides, and deserts, too. This is a fairly small place, but it’s warm and homey in a good way. The proprietor, Matt, welcomed us at the door and followed up with us(and the other tables) to make sure we were taken care of and happy. Just inside, there’s a full bar, with lots of bar stools and small high-top tables. The ceiling is low, and it’s woody and a little dark in a way that reminds me of an English country pub. I liked it. There are two dining rooms. Ours was modestly decorated, somewhat dimly lighted, and cozy. I had a traditional, mid-western meal: salad, soup, steak, and a baked potato. My mixed-green salad was not remarkable and was small, but seemed fresh. The cheddar soup was hot and good. My steak was excellent, seasoned properly, cooked a perfect medium, and with just enough char and finish on the outside. And tasty. My baked potato could have been cooked a bit more — it was a touch crunchy, but I did not complain. My dinner guests had the twice-baked potatos, and they looked better than my baked. Next time! If I am back in Clintonville for dinner, Mathew’s is top of my list and I would love to come back here for another meal.

Now Clintonville is a very small and very tight knit community. You spit out of your car and everyone knows it. It’s a very nice town so it comes as no surprise there would be really good local restaurants. I never expected Mathew’s. The Supper Club is run by Mathew(not sure if it was his first or last name), an old Canadian hockey player who also mans the bar. When you walk in, you usually start out in the bar where Mathew is a wonderful host. He makes a wicked Martini and the stories of his days as a hockey player are great. One thing Mathew will tell you«Whatever you want, you can have.» He means that too. I wanted a different cut of steak with the Surf and Turf, he made it happen. No fuss, no huge extra change charge, just said let him have the strip instead of the filet on his surf and turf. That is service. As we went into dinner, he made sure to tell us to come back to the bar after dinner as he had something special to share with us. The dining room was pretty simple Midwestern steak house. Nothing amazing, but very comfortable on a winter night. The starter was a homemade tomato bisque which was to die for. I think we had two bowls each it was that good. The steaks were flavorful, juicy and cooked to perfect order. One thing to know about Wisconsin steak houses, your steak is usually going to be topped with a little butter, so if you don’t want the butter, let them know up front. The sides and salads were also of the freshest. Mathew informed us that he gets all the stuff locally sourced and it is all processed and made on premises. We finished dinner and went back to the bar. Mathew presented us with a Butterzoid, a concoction of his own design. He shared his recipe with us, but I don’t want to give it away. You’ll have to go see him. Imagine an alcoholic Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup and you have the Butterzoid. Served in a large glass and big enough for two to share. It was the perfect end to a wonderful night. If you find yourself in Green Bay, make the 45 minute drive out to Clintonville for a dinner at Mathew’s. You won’t be disappointed.

Wow, what a disappointment!!! We were hoping to find a jewel in back woods Wisconsin but, sadly, all we found was the same substandard fare we find in most places in northern WI. We’re from Milwaukee and have both experienced fine dining. This is no where close. From the orange roughy to the clam chowder to the Mediterranean white fish it was all a huge disappointment. If you’re traveling through, stick to Culvers. The only redeeming quality was that our server was nice.
