Description

Specialties

Established in 1993, Stearn Design Build is the premier Green Builder in Bryan and College Station. Providing design and building services for new homes and remodeling projects. Stearns Design Build designed and built the first net-metered solar home in Brazos County.

Stearns Design Build developed the Transitions design theory. This approach puts people in a home at the center of design consideration rather than the building itself, as is the norm in modern building science. By connecting people to their natural and community environments Stearns Design Build is able to design and build happiness and sustainability into beautiful projects.

A stearns Design Build remodeling project starts with an energy audit. Creating beautiful kitchens, bathrooms and room additions can provide a great opportunity to improve energy efficiency and monthly savings in utility costs.

Meet the Business Owner

Hugh S.

Business Owner

Hugh Stearns took a course on «ecological buildings» in 1976. Since that time he has continued to study design and building. Having worked his way through school as a carpenter, he has a solid foundation in craftsmanship. With a degree in psychology from Texas A&M and a strong background in philosophy, Hugh has always had a fascination with the psychology of space, which motivated the development of the Transitions theory of design.

It is a strong sense of place that has kept Hugh in the Brazos Valley where he grew up. Love of community has encouraged him to engage beyond the work he does at Stearns Design Build. He has served on numerous committees for the city of College Station including the Planing and Zoning Commission. He has founded several organizations including the Brazos Independent Business Alliance, The Brazos Valley Green Building Alliance and the GrassRoots Education and Action Team. He has also served on many boards including KEOS Community Radio.
