The largest archaeological site north of Mexico, where about 70 mounds are preserved on this 2200-​acre tract in Collinsville, IL. An interpretive Center has a site model, 17-​minute orientation show, and gallery islands that explain the culture of the Mississippians who lived here 1,000 years ago. Climb the 150 steps to the top of Monks Mound for a wonderous view of St. Louis, Alton, and the Grand Plaza.

History

Established in 1989.

The site was built sometime around AD 800, with it becoming a regional center sometime around AD1050. The Site was named a US National Historic Landmark in 1965, and in 1982, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization designated Cahokia Mounds a World Heritage Site for its significance in the prehistory of North America. The Interpretive Center was constructed in 1989, which includes a World-​Class orientation film and gallery exhibits. There are also events and educational programs scheduled throughout the year.
