My 5-​year old LG washing machine died this fall, and my search for a replacement brought me to Terry’s. I told the salesperson that I wanted a reliable washer like my Mom’s Maytag from the good old days, and he said this is the one: the Speed Queen AWN412. It really does look like my Mom’s old Maytag:
*Washing instructions are printed on the underside of the lid, which you can keep open while the tub fills.
*It’s manufactured with more steel and less plastic than my former washer.
*It has mechanical rather than electronic controls, so no silly songs.
*Being a top loader, it won’t easily develop a mold problem like a front loader.
*My SQ AWN412 was made in Wisconsin, not South Korea. Americuh!
*When I have a problem, I call the little local appliance store, not New Delhi. Americuh!
*Warranty: 3 years parts and labor; 5 years motor; 10 years transmission.
*Speed Queen is the most reliable brand, yet Consumer Reports does not recommend it because CR says it is not energy-​efficient. But how energy– and resource-​efficient can it be to manufacture, ship, purchase, use, and dispose of a machine that works only five years, like my junky old «top-​rated» LG?

Not sure what to think of this place. Might be OK if I was buying new appliances. Called them about a used refrigerator for my son who was moving into a new place. They had one for $ 150 (or so they said) but when we arrived, it was gone and we spent $ 225. OK — the first one could’ve sold. Anyway, it was «reconditioned» and supposed to be in good working order. We got less than 5 months out of it and then it went kaput. They said «Sorry — we only warranty for 30 days on used stuff.» But after a little cajoling, they finally replaced it with another used one — free of charge. Kudos on that.
