History
Established in 1863.
Started first as the Columbus Street Rail Company operating a horse-drawn street car down High Street, Columbus then got an electric street car in 1888. By 1892, the entire city is using electric trolly cars and the Columbus Railway and Light Company forms, getting a 25-year contract to provide transit to Columbus, while a deal with Edison Company makes the company not only the sole provider of streetcars, but also of electricity.
In 1937, Columbus Railway, Power, & Light become Columbus & Southern Ohio Electric Company, which then in 1949 sold all the trasportation assets to the Columbus Transit Company who operated until COTA formed in 1971 and took control of operations in 1974, making the organization a publically held agency providing transportation for the people.
