Johnson’s Real Ice Cream

Pesto Chicken sandwich was very good. The Coney Dog was good as well. They either forgot to tell us to get our chips or they forgot to put them in the bag.
The shakes were just ok. Way too much milk & really thin. The ice cream was chunky on the bottom and seemed to be icey.
Gave it three stars for the sandwich. Two for the ice cream.

Not bad ice cream but nothing special. It tastes like grocery store ice cream to be honest.

It any other town, there’d be no contest; Johnson’s would hands down claim the title of best ice cream in town. Johnson’s however is located in Columbus (ok, Bexley) and therefore has to contend with not one, but TWO ice cream powerhouses (in the form of Jeni’s and Graters). So how does it fare in those match ups? Pretty well actually.
Johnson’s takes a more traditional ice cream parlor approach. More accurately it IS a more traditional ice cream parlor. If you take a look around the store, you’ll see that Johnson’s has been making excellent ice cream for generations. They are nothing if not experienced.
They have the types of traditional flavors that you’d expect. Rocky road. Cookies and cream. Bubblegum. And sundaes. Turtle sundaes. Banana splits. While they often have new and interesting additions to the menu, they’re unlikely to push the envelope in the way that Jeni’s does.
And the atmosphere at Johnson’s is different too. It’s a place that is very much connected to, and part of, it’s community. It’s a place where you might casually run into your neighbors who also decided to walk over for ice cream on a warm summer night.
And although the ice cream is indeed fantastic, that sense of community is what makes Johnson’s truly stand out. It’s welcoming and makes you feel comfortable and at home. I can’t really imagine a better feeling to go with ice cream.

Ok so maybe the ice cream was kind of good, however the place inside was dirty. Tables needed wiped off & floor swept, and there were 5 employees just standing around waiting for customers. The place really needs to be updated! Next time we will go back to graters down the street

Come on get your head out of the gutter and don’t concentrate on the name of this place. Good, now that I have your full attention I can describe the ice cream here.
Oh the endless options, from the traditional ice cream flavors, sorbets, yogurts and shakes there is something for everyone here. I liked the black raspberry chocolate chip but I’m just a stickler for that flavor in general. My friend got the Bexley maple sugar ice cream and thought it was great. My other friend got a shake and described it as a «creamsicle.»
Luckily, I came here right after my walk/​run so this was a great treat and I got a perfect parking spot before it got really busy. It got really busy for the concert they do every Thursday night at 7 PM outside on the patio.
I will definitely be back soon to try other flavors after my run in this area.

I always get one scoop (vanilla) sundae with hot fudge and pecans. The nuts taste freshly roasted. I live on other side of town but it’s worth the drive.

This place is pretty awesome. It’s a combination old school ice cream shop and old school diner. I’ve had ice cream sodas a couple times and they are so good, the ice cream is perfectly crunchy.
I had a reuben and it was solid. The interior is nothing special but reminds me of a great burgers-​and-​shakes joint from my hometown so I find it comforting.
Also, at Weiland’s they sell their version of a drumstick/​nutty buddy and it is REALLY good!

One of my favorite ice cream places. Prices are about the same at graeters but I think the ice cream at Johnson’s is a bit more rich and flavorful.

I typically go to Jeni’s for ice cream, but a friend suggested Johnson’s. Great, traditional flavors. I’ll be going back.

I love their ice cream and I love eating their Kreme Peanut Butter ice cream and other local flavors. But, I don’t think I want to go sit inside this place again. I think I will order and sit outside or just pick up their pints wherever they are sold.
It was a little after 4 on a Wednesday and the place had 2 – 3 other customers in it. Maybe they just finished with a rush of messy kids and I came just after they left but the inside was a mess. My flip flops almost came off because it stuck to the floor. The booths were a wreck with dried ice cream, paper, and other crap on the floor. The tables were not much better and I didn’t touch them for fear of being stuck to them. I was just glad I was alone and not here with my toddler who would have thought it was time to play with stuff on the ground. If it wasn’t for their tasty ice cream then this would have been a one star place. It wasn’t like they were shorthanded either as a girl was sitting off to the side sorting cups and three people were behind the counter.
Love the ice cream but I believe I will order and sit outside next time. I did find one clean table to chill at for 5 minutes. I really want to try their ice cream Buckeyes on my next stop.

We came to Johnson’s for the first time this afternoon. It seems that we got there right after a giant group cleared out, or at least that’s what the tables and floors looked like. Pretty big mess. But the ice cream is great, the service is fast and super friendly, and the prices are cheap! The lunch menu looked really good too. Maybe I’ll go back for a chili dog or a turkey sandwich sometime soon!

I love their ice cream!.. black raspberry is the best not too heavy in sweetness… but what I don’t like is the way they do the service they cashiering and doing the ice cream at the same time… not trained…

How can a business in financial trouble offer multiple deals on Groupon, Living Social and Google? And Johnson’s Ice Cream offered a limited amount of coupons so it isn’t like they couldn’t control their offers. I had not been to Johnson’s for some time but was enticed by the deal. Typically I am exactly what they want, a customer who will return at full price. I try to be courteous and not use my coupon at the beginning or the end of the deal. wish I had… less than two weeks after I bought it, Johnson’s in New albany was out of business even though it’s website said it was still in business. That is alot of gas to get there. And Johnson’s did not even value my potential business to be honest. Not a way to run a business

Yuck! Store smells. Ice cream just okay. Better off going to Graeter’s down the street.

After being cut off in line by some Jewish lady trying to get pints to go, I was finally able to get some pumpkin ice cream goodness.
This place hasn’t changed in years, and it’s just as good as usual. It’s ice cream that’s «just right», and really hangs well at a place that’s on «main street».

I was thinking about giving this three stars, but it truly was a «meh» experience today. I feel bad saying that because the people were nice enough, but I found the ice cream mostly subpar – out of four scoops that hubs and I had, only one of them I found palatable, the Egg Nog. I also had the Fresh Cranberry Sherbet. .. which tasted like sugar and not really like cranberries at all. Hubs had the Pistachio and Almond, which was day-​glo green and tasted mostly like almond extract, and the Black Walnut, which I tasted and literally couldn’t finish eating my spoonful. I suspect that the black walnut flavor uses black walnut «flavoring» in the base, which makes it taste like a caricature of black walnuts. (I’m not automatically anti-​extract or flavoring, but black walnut flavoring is the yuck.)
Mostly, everything just tasted like sugar with some extract added, no real flavors. The texture was a little wonky, too; the ice creams weren’t really as creamy as I’m used to. Except the egg nog ice cream. That one was really good – so much like egg nog that you’d get at any store that I wonder if they didn’t just churn egg nog that they bought. It’s a custard, like egg-​based ice creams, so it would probably work as long as the sugar content was high enough.
I generally would give a place multiple chances before settling on my rating, but not much about Johnson’s beckons me to come back, especially since there’s a Jeni’s AND a Graeters between where I live and where Johnson’s is. (I’m no huge fan of Graeters, either, but that’s another review.)

This is my Favorite Spot for Ice Cream! The owner Jim makes all the Ice Cream himself and is great to talk to. They have so many flavors and compaired to the other Local Favorites Jeni’s and Graeters, Johnsons is my fav! He also has another store in New Albany which is very cute and also has cupcakes, cake and cake pops, but the Original here in Bexley is a must taste!

This is one of my top 3 ice creams of all time, nationwide. The quality of their ice cream is top notch, no extra air churned in here! Thick and creamy and every flavor I’ve had is delicious. My favorite is the French Butter Fudge which tastes similar to a Jello Pudding Pop (if you remember those) but waaaaaay better!
They are typically staffed by high school students but they are all very friendly and happy to give you a sample to try out a new flavor.

Been going here for 30+ years, it’s a Bexley institution. More flavors than Graeters, less expensive than Graeters, better ice cream than Graeters. Doesn’t have those ridiculous large chunks of frozen chocolate to break your teeth like Graeters.
They have a ton a flavors here, it is a bit overwhelming. I’ve never had the «food» here but the ice cream is the best. Where else can you go and get cinnamon (favorite) ice cream year round? Burgundy cherry is my other weakness.
Great for kids.

Not bad! As a long time Jeni’s fan, I was hesitant to give kudos to anyone else. But Johnson’s is pretty good. The store isn’t near as simple as Jeni’s, it’s more like a never renovated Graeter’s. They sell cookies, pies, and other treats as well as lunch. They offer a about 20 different sandwiches ans soups and salads.
The sweet service is what really made my day. I first I felt like I was getting the stare down when I didn’t know what I wanted immediately upon entering. But then after trying a few, I realized that the server was getting an understanding of who I was.
Of course, I couldn’t try them all, but the tops tastes for me were the Apple Strudel ice cream and the Cappuccino yogurt. She offered the kids scoop for $ 1.60. I got that and it was just enough.
