Tom & Jerry Auto Service

I just paid $ 110 for them to tell me they didn’t know what was wrong with my car and to take it somewhere else. To be fair my car is a Porsche; most mechanics won’t touch them, and the ones who do charge a premium. They were not trying to rip me off, they just never see a Porsche, and they realized it wasn’t going to be a quick fix, so they referred me somewhere else.
The going rate for a check engine light is $ 117 to $ 150 for my car; all I know now is that it is NOT the Mass Airflow Sensor (a Bosch part they said was $ 500, but everyone else sells it for $ 250). Charging the customer because you didn’t know how to work on his car is unprofessional. I understand the mechanics are not working for free, but if my car is a learning experience, you shouldn’t charge me for an hour’s labor.
They are kind and friendly, but this was not professional, and certainly not a good deal.

Edited review August 22, 2015: Unfortunately, I had to downgrade my review from 5-​stars to 3-​stars. I had my tires rotated at Tom & Jerry’s in late July. In early August, I went on a trip to WV and found that my rear wheel was only being held on by one lug nut. The other rear wheel also had loose lug nuts. The wheel was wobbling and we almost went on the highway with it like that! Fortunately, I have AAA and they fixed the issue. However, when I called Tom & Jerry’s to tell them about it, they didn’t apologize (which is what I truly wanted). I was told that the owner would call back but he never did. I’m really disappointed because I had just left the 5-​star review after years of great service. This was a life-​threatening oversight (that came on the heels of another oversight where they failed to reset my oil meter). I can no longer endorse them. I will leave them 3-​stars because of the years of trouble-​free service prior to this mistake.

As other people mentioned they are Friendly and Kind.
I got my car serviced (oil change, transmission service) couple of days ago and when I picked up my car, I found that my stereo volume was set at 25 (3 – 4 is good enough under regular driving condition). It literally freaked me out.
be professional… and just do what you are told or asked.

Tom & Jerry’s auto is a large repair shop, 6 bays of lifts, tools & noise. Tom is the owner and father, Jerry Schwan is the son and major-​league character who runs the office. Communication isn’t their strong suit but they replaced the a/​c compressor in my little honda for hundred$ less than a certain well-​known dealership in Northwest Columbus wanted, and they did it on time and with a smile. Warranty is good nationwide thanks to NAPA. I even got a ride from Jerry in person. Leave yourself an extra minute to hear the man’s stories, he has plenty LOL.

I will not take my car anywhere else to get fixed. Jerry and the entire crew are wonderful to do business with and do a great job!

I love Tom and Jerry’s and won’t go anywhere else in Columbus to get my mechanical work done. Being female I always worry about getting ripped off or taken advantage of for obvious lack of knowledge, but not at Tom and Jerry’s. They are super transparent with the pricing and they thoroughly explain the problem to me every time so that I understand why I need the parts/​work they are recommending. The staff is always friendly and welcoming as well. I am so happy that I found Tom and Jerry’s!

So far so good. I called, told the man my issue and he was very understanding and didn’t make me feel stupid at all… Which is what normally happens. Already impressed. Taking my car there now. I will post another review after it’s fixed!

Well, they tried to rip me off.
A couple of months ago, I got new tires on my car at a place called tire barn in Indiana. The man there told me I needed a new rack on my car. I put it off. Then once my car started shaking after it was pulled out of the snow by AAA, I thought it would finally be a good time to get my car fixed. Which brings me to the day I took my car to Tom & Jerry’s.
When I called, I told the guy that I know I have a bad rack on my car (him and the other guy thought this was funny, which was annoying. Haha she said she has a bad rack… No), and I think it was damaged even more from being pulled out of the snow by AAA.
I Drop my car off and wait for a call.
Man calls me back maybe an hour later. Tells me the only thing wrong with it was there was snow and ice stuck by the wheel and that’s what was making it shake really bad if I went over 50 MPH.
But he says nothing about going ahead and fixing my bad rack, which is why I came there in the first place (and because my car was shaking really bad down the highway.)
He said he drove it on the highway before. Then he knocked off the snow and ice that was stuck. Then drove it on the highway again, and the shaking stopped. I forget his reasoning as to why he didn’t fix the rack or look at it, I think it had to do with snow being on my car. I don’t know.
So cool, it’s not shaking anymore, I guess I’ll just get my rack fixed in the spring or summer when there’s not snow all over my car. Whatever.
So then, he tells me it’s $ 46 and some change.
Um almost $ 50 for you to waste my gas and knock off snow?
I said exactly that to him once I got to the shop.
His response… «Well I took time to work on it»
Well, I’m not an idiot. I told him labor should only be about $ 30, IF THAT.
He said okay, and did a little typing and clicking on his computer, then said it was only $ 23 and some change.
I told him I’d be back when it got warmer to take car of my rack, but once I got home, I kept thinking about it and it made me pretty mad that this guy thought he could take advantage of a girl.
Half of me never wants to go back there and give them my business again, but the other half says do it, because they know I’m not one to mess with. I also would like an apology from the owner. I feel 100% disrespected.
I wouldn’t recommend this place if you don’t know anything about cars and feel like you’d be oblivious if someone tried to rip you off. Disgusting how people treat others.

I received another round of 5-​star service from Tom and Jerry! I called them early on Monday morning because I suspected that a rock had flown up into the inside parts of my car (yea, i know — it sounds very bizarre… BUT I WAS TOTALLY RIGHT.) Jeff picked up the phone, amicable as always, and told me to bring my car by as soon as I wanted and they’d take a look. Within the next 45 minutes they had found the rock (they couldn’t believe it either!) and i was on my merry way, free of charge! WOW. needless to say, this made my day. When this kind of stuff happens, it reminds me how we should all pay it forward! So not only did I get my car fixed, but I felt like I had a bowl of chicken soup for the soul.
Definitely come here to get honest, friendly service from a great group of guys.

I chose Tom and Jerry’s because of good ratings, fairly reasonable prices and that it’s location was convenient.
The first time I went to them it was to get a mysterious electrical problem solved where I couldn’t get my car started (no spark). Like always, it didn’t materialize. After I pick up the car, I immediately stop to get gas and then guess what — the car doesn’t start. I call them and they show up in 10 minutes, get ‘er started and we drive to the shop so they can do a last minute run through to make sure everything was okay. The culprit — a loose clamp on the battery terminal.
The second time I went it was for routine maintenance, including a waterpump replacement. I take it home and third time I drive it — bamm — white smoke from under the hood. I take it back and it turns out that a clamp on a coolant hose (reattached from the repair) was loose. No charge for the repair and they gave me a free oil change. They were nice about it but gosh, if I were less knowledgable I could have lost my engine…
Bottom line — decent prices and nice staff but not so hot on quality control. I’m sure lots of other folks get great service and I get that folks miss stuff but I think I’ll try some other place and see if they miss stuff too.

I needed a tire patch after running over a nail, and Tom & Jerry got it done within the day! The workers were incredibly helpful and friendly, and I felt really comfortable leaving my car in their capable hands. It cost 16.01 and I am very happy with the services here. Definitely recommend if you hate dealing with auto stuff and want a quick repair.

I really wanted to love Tom & Jerry, especially after reading the glowing reviews here and elsewhere, but in the end, I just couldn’t. Certainly, there are some really good things — the guy working the front desk (whose name I didn’t get) was wonderful, and one of the employees was nice enough to give me a ride to and from the shop. Unfortunately, the guy who actually worked on the car, Jeff, could have been better. I took the car in yesterday for two unrelated issues and was told that he would call me today when it was ready. When I hadn’t heard back by 3:15 (they’re only open until 5), I called and was told «oh yeah, it’s ready.» Fairly minor, but still annoying to have to go all day without a call or a car. Then when I got there to pick it up, one of the problems (a broken external door lock) still wasn’t fixed, even though it was on the bill. He told me I could bring it back tomorrow since «it’s already paid for.» I told him that I hadn’t actually paid yet (seriously, why would I not check the car out first, especially for something like a door lock?) and he asked if I wanted him to take it off of the bill. When I said yes, and that I would bring it back in when I was able, he was visibly annoyed.
I haven’t ruled out ever going back, but I think I’ll check out a different shop first, and I wouldn’t jump to recommend this place.

Great experience with a basic flat tire. I dropped off the tire, came back the next morning and for $ 15 they plugged the hole, mounted the tire, checked the rest and let me take a quick look at the underside of my car. Very responsive by phone, I’ll be back for my next oil change.

i think these guys are the best. i needed some serious brake and wheel repair and they did a super job. They used recommissioned parts were they could to save me money. They were really quick too. I dropped it off in the morning and was able to pick it up when I got out of work. They have been in business for well over 50 years. When I asked around (prior to taking my car there) no one had a negative thing to say about them. They are good.

I’ve been unfortunate enough to need some major auto repair services twice in the past year, and luckily a friend told me about Tom and Jerry’s. Tom and Jerry’s is a little shop in Grandview owned by a father and son team. Jerry (the father, I think) knows the meaning of real old-​fashioned customer service.
The first time I stopped in, I had a ’92 Lumina, «Big Blue,» with not much life left in it. The car was randomly stalling when I was driving at various speeds. I know very little about cars, but I knew that even this was a weird circumstance and was scared both for my safety and for the repair price tag. I had some mediocre experiences with the Firestone downtown and decided I wanted to go somewhere small and local, where I thought I might be treated like a car owner rather than a woman who could be ripped off by mechanics. Enter Tom and Jerry’s.
The shop is indeed small and I almost drove past it the first time. The cars in the lot are of varying degrees of broken down, which made me feel better about bringing in my clunker. I spoke with Jerry personally, and it felt a lot like having an uncle taking over the project. He promised that he would drive the car around until experiencing the problem, and that he wouldn’t stop until he figured out the culprit. I was impressed with his determination.
We finally figured out the problem and I braced myself for the estimated costs, upwards of $ 800. I was pleasantly surprised when my total was in the ballpark of $ 250 because I said «yes» to using used parts if possible. The problem and repair were broken down to me in terms I could understand – what a concept! Jerry also gave me rides to and from the repair shop. Such service!
The car kept rolling along just fine for a few more months, only stopping because of an accident that totaled the car. In the moments after the collision, people were asking me where I would like to have the car towed to. Without a garage or driveway at my apartment, I was at a loss. Then I remembered Tom and Jerry’s was just around the corner. Jerry and his team took care of everything. Although Big Blue had reached the end, I knew she was in good hands.
I can’t say I’m looking forward to any future repairs on my new car, but I know that when I have an inevitable problem, I’ll be going back to Tom and Jerry’s.
