Contra Costa Powersports is a step below your average used car lot — complete with it’s own cadre of dishonest and slimy bush league salesmen looking to scam you. Imagine an entire sales staff of those mall kiosk creepers chasing you down trying to sell you snake oil. That’s Contra Costa Powersports in a nutshell. I even witnessed them bang a gong after a sale like some sort of bizarre «Wolf of Wall Street» celebration. Gross.
If the feeling of bugs crawling all over your skin doesn’t deter you from purchasing a motorcycle from this dealer then maybe the numbers will. I tried to buy a relatively cheap motorcycle from them knowing with California taxes I’d be paying roughly 10% of msrp in fees. That’s fine… but is it fine paying 37% of the bike’s msrp in fees alone? They think it is. Included in this price was an inflated freight charge even though Honda lists the actual freight price on their website. Not too bright. I’d of paid the true freight and whatever other fees they wanted but they refused and were unapologetic when confronted with the true freight charge. Again, not too bright.
Making a few extra hundred on a sale isn’t everything. The real money in motorcycle shops is made in the service department. This particular dealer and a few others around this area are willing to cut off their nose to spite their face. If you screw your customers over a few hundred dollars during the sale, they’re less likely to be loyal and come back to your dealership to get their service done. Think about it.
That being said, the attitude and ethos of the sales staff drips down from management and it’s more than likely that the cancer has spread to other departments. A lot of people forget that motorcycle shops employ mechanics who are more or less responsible for the lives of every person who brings a motorcycle in for service. If one sloppy worker forgets to tighten an axle nut or doesn’t inspect wear on a sprocket; the result can be deadly for the rider. Trust is key, and integrity has to be maintained throughout the entire staff. Unilocalers, steer clear.

I think they wrote the book «How to Loose Customers and Alienate People» at this place. I spoke with Ian about 1 specific used bike I was interested in buying. I asked if it was possible to test ride it. He said, «Absolutely, as long as you have a class M license and have been riding for more than two years». I let him know that I do on both counts. We made the appointment for the next day. I showed up at the appointed time and introduced myself. He said,“Hi, you’re here to test ride the bike.” I said yes. He pulled the bike out and we chatted while I looked it over. Then he handed me a waiver to sign which I began filling out. Then he goes into the back and comes back out with another gentleman whom, he introduces as his sales manager Lance. Whereupon Lance says to me «I’m sorry, it’s store policy to not test ride motorcycles. But what we can do is you can purchase the bike and take it for test ride and if you don’t like it within 20 minutes you can bring it back for a refund.» Yeah, suuure I’m going to do that. I get up and begin tearing up the waiver I had been filling out and turn to leave. Then he changes his story, saying, «The reason we can’t let you ride it is because the motorcycle is in our we have it on consignment. B what we can do is we can call the owner and have him come down here and he can let you ride it.» And I said to them one would have thought that would have been done yesterday when I made this appointment. At that point he says to me «Well you wouldn’t want to ride it today anyway because it’s been raining.» It had rained the previous night and at this point it was pretty much bone dry outside. I just smiled and shook my head and walked out the door. Needless to say, at this point I will buy my bike from any anywhere but there and I will never be going back for any reason whatsoever.

Awesome customer service! I know some complained on here about bad service but if you know what you want and give them a budget, they will stick to it. This is my first set of gear that I bought and I am a new rider. Maurice and Chris answered all of my questions and had no problem explaining every detail. This will be my shop I always go too.
Since they sell motorcycles they will ask what your interested in and to take a look at the bikes. But they they were not pushy at all, only helpful.

I bought my Honda NC from these guys a few months back. Rob the salesman was very well informed and best of all, low pressure. I paid cash for my bike so I cant give an accurate review of the financing team which is usually where you can tell how a dealer is, but they all seemed trust worthy to me. I will definitely be coming back when im in the need for another bike!

Repair for your bike? Yep. Friendly? Yep. Shopping, you could but the prices seem a bit high. Still, if your repair is daunting or you plain just want someone else to do it, the labor cost is fair. Years ago (2007) my husband bought his Suzuki DR650 here brand new and he still rides it now.
Just last week my son purchased a Honda 450 from a private party whom dropped it here for a once over before we picked it up. They had it 1 day and it was perfect when we picked it up.
The clutch lever is broken at the moment but thats only because my kid likes to fall. :)

Don’t waste your time with these guys. Went in to buy a new bike and it was like dealing with used car salesman. Save yourself the aggravation and go to Berkeley Honda Yamaha.

My review is for the service department.
I brought in my TL1000 for an on the bike fork seal replacement. The cost for the labor and fork oil, I brought my own seals was $ 275. This is a reasonable cost and it was done all in the same day. Like any good service group they did a once over on the bike and found other things to fix at additional costs. I did have the bleed the rear brake for $ 50.
When I picked up my bike, the battery was dead. It was not the dealership’s fault, but got great service in charging it back up and figuring out why it was not charging right. Brian, the mechanic, came out and gave me a good 20 minutes of diagnostics at no charge. That was way above and beyond service.
They earned my business in the past when they opened and continue to do so with this most recent service.
What did I learn today? The service desk is around the back of the building.

Scheduled recall work on my gsxr750 for master brake cylinder. Dropped the bike off on Monday when they were closed. Someone happened to be there and took the key with a piece of paper with my name on it. She let me know that it would be put in the parts managers desk. Mind you the appointment was scheduled at 9am for that Tuesday. I called in at 2pm only for them to tell me don’t come by till 4pm. I think to myself why isn’t it done since my appointment was at 9am? I had a few errands to attend to and coordinate. I had scheduled with my friend to drop me off. I showed up at 4pm as I had to be in SF by 5pm. I show up and they go back to the shop only to come back out and say it hasn’t been done! I ask why it hasn’t been done and they said they worked on another bike before mine. I said I had a 9am appointment how is it that all day my bike hasn’t been serviced? They don’t have an answer. Well sorry only goes so far. By the time we go back and forth and the bike gets out to me it’s 425 and I don’t want to kill myself trying to race to SF to take came of another appointment I had. At that point I just told them to do it which means my other appointment had to be canceled. Poor planning and organization skills for a business ! The reason you make an appointment is so both parties can be on a time line. Won’t ever be using these guys.

They do good work, but they are SLOW and don’t communicate well. My boyfriend’s bike has been there for over 2 weeks now and each time they have a different excuse to why the bike isn’t ready. He has been coming here for years, but it’s DEFINITELY time for a change.

Love this place! It’s where I get my servicing for my cbr done. They have pretty reasonable prices, and their customer service is pretty good too. I went to buy a helmet and they price matched it from Amazon!

My Suzuki DR650 got stolen — and then recovered (trashed) — after dealing with bozos on Craigslist who think that their 8K mi «mint condition» 4 year old DR650 is worth just under MSRP, I gave up talking to those wackos and filled out a form on the Suzuki website. I had calls back from four local dealerships.
Ian from Contra Costa Powersports e-​mailed me right back, we also chatted on the phone about what I was looking for. In the end — he gave me a better deal on a stock DR650 than the dealer on the peninsula could do – but they did not have a DR650 in stock. He said if I gave him a down payment, he could have one in on the very next truck arriving the next day. (Ironically — East Bay Motorsports was also «out» of DR650s and gave me a song and dance about how they were «out» and didn’t return my queries about when they could get one in the shop).
The next day, Ian confirmed when the motorcycle would arrive and I set a time with him to get to the dealership to fill out paperwork. He even got me a VIN number so I could pass it along to my insurance before close of business and get it covered before I even put my hand on the throttle!
Right when I walked into the dealership, there was my motorcycle with a «SOLD» sign on it – so of course I checked the VIN and saw that it was mine so sat on it right away. I think that’s Ian’s trick to figure out what his customer looks like without asking for a photo like a Craigslist blind date! He came right over and introduced himself, and then took me around to introduce me to Maurice in parts and Dan in finance. I got a nice heavy chain and U-​lock to keep my motorcycles from escaping the paddock at home, and then spent some time with Dan on the paperwork. We closed the place down and Ian & Dan topped off my afternoon with all kinds of sweet talk before Nelson very kindly helped me roll out so I could ride home.
And then — three weeks later — I went in for my 600 mi tune up — normally, I would just check my valves myself (already adjusted the chain at the end of the second week) but I had a date at the Concord Airport, so Brian took care of me and made sure I could get my bike checked out — Steve did a great job, and Ricky was super nice in the check out process and getting me my keys back.
Overall — a really nice group of people and not a «high pressure» environment. I’m very pleased with my purchase and with their friendly customer service.

Awesome bought my first bike here cbr 300r Ian and the crew are the best in the biz I went back twice for help with the bike and no charge I love these guys they really honor the warranty when u buy new from there dealer I am getting my next bike very soon and yes from them again as I am loving the 300 Honda 2015 I would like to live a little more now maybe 600;)

Service, oh my god, horrible…
Took Brand new (170 miles) KL650R purchased from them to see why it wasnt getting fuel, and it wouldnt start, anything that happens this quick in should be covered. After 4 days of waiting they found the problem, and now they want 99 $ for a diagnoses? Lol, honestly its not the money, its the fact they care about swindling their customers, than earning business. Never shopping here again. Shameful to the Kawasaki name.

My first experience as a customer was pretty solid. I worked specifically with Ian, Nelson (Brother Mandela) and Dave in finance. I went in to check out a Honda CTX 700 DCT (yes I know, a big scooter) and they didn’t have one on the floor, but let me check out the manual version. They ran my credit and approved me for finance within 15 minutes while Nelson brought me around and had me meet the whole team, including people selling gear, service department guys, finance, and the rest of the sales team. After deciding to purchase, they called around to 4 other dealers to have the bike I wanted transported on a flatbed the following Saturday.
When I showed up the following week with my trade-​in, they had it appraised within an hour and made a market rate offer, which I accepted. While I was waiting for the financing paperwork, I sat and chatted with Nelson for a good hour and ate salmon jerky with him at his desk (a little tough for my taste, but I appreciated the gesture). Dave in finance was super thorough and clear with me about the terms and conditions and made it a very quick and painless experience. After that, Nelson took the time to go over the pre-​sale checklist with me made sure I understood all of the basics about the bike, even though I had done my own research on the bike and have plenty of riding experience, he made sure I felt confident in how to operate the new machine.
Nelson even helped me with the difficult insurance rep over the phone when I called to change the vehicle on my policy. Then he spent a good half hour with me on google maps showing me a scenic route on inside roads from Concord to back to Oakland. He even wrote down the directions on a piece of paper to tape to my gas tank.
A week into riding my new bike, the computer that controls the automatic transmission on the bike started acting a little funny and I called them up to consult, and they assured my they would have no issue taking a look at it and have someone experienced check it out. It’s a new technology on a model that has only been on the market for two years, so I can’t say that the issue with the bike is any reflection on the dealership, just seems like an issue with the manufacturer. Oh well, those are the risks you take as a buyer and I don’t think it warrants knocking a star off of my review.
Like I said, solid experience here. They went a lot further than I would expect a dealer to go in making sure I had everything i needed and didn’t feel shorted. I would recommend them without a doubt. Will provide service update after I get my bike looked at. Thanks Brother Mandela, and Ian, and Dave!

I am new to riding and at 39 took a lot of time to build the nerve to take the MSF course and get licensed. I had come here occasionally before I bought my first newbie 250 and figured I’d come to them when I was ready to move up to a bigger bike. Ian and his colleagues clowned me for buying my first beginner bike used and not from them new. If it’s your first why buy new? Their attitude is garbage. I was there today actually to buy back protection and will take my purchase and my near future bike purchase elsewhere. They just want your money there’s no community here. Beware of these people they’re not looking out for you.

Stopped by to look for a commute bike. I was greeted by Nelson and was shown several bikes to choose from. Being 6’7 is challenging in a bike.
Within a short time I walked out with a new bike. Was happy with the price, sales staff and the finance department.

The worst place to buy a used motorcycle ever!
I bought my 250cc Motorcycle only two months ago (7000 miles). They overpriced it for me for the excuse of doing full inspection and changing what needs to be changed and all that nonsense that sales reps tell you to fool you into accepting that price tag. After I bought it, It did not start smoothly in cold, and when it gets warm it revs very high. I took it back to the service center and they claimed that it needs to adjust the idle and everything should be fine. Because I’m new to Motorcycles, I wasn’t familiar of the symptom. I took it to an independent mechanic to find out that this is an overdue valve adjustment!!!
The mechanic also told me that the original break fluid was still there. It was all dirty and black, which should have been changed since you expect to buy something properly maintained from a dealer! But NOOOOO. they were so cheap to properly do that!
Also, The back tyre was in reverse!!! When I bought it, they said they changed the tyres. But to change the tyres and not know which direction should they be on is a disgrace!
Never ever ever will I go there or even refer somebody to them.
If I can go lower with the stars, I would.

I used the Costco Auto Program and found that this was a participating dealer. Knowing the price was fixed and no hassle would be had I went ahead a decided to pay them a visit. I dealt with Ian who was delightful to work with and made my buying experience the best I have ever had.
Over the last 10 years I have purchased 6 new motorcycles and not once have I had such a great experience throughout the entire process. Lance came over to Ian and I to explain the complete process– cost breakdown, otd price, ect., I decided to make the purchase. Finance came over and was also very professional, once that was done Ian took me around and introduced me to the service and parts departments.
Overall I would highly recommend this dealership, customer service is outstanding and the staff is knowledgeable.
