G & G Deck and Fence

Clearly a disaster to work with. The contract was to remove the large two story deck and reconstruct it again on the same footprint. I insisted the builder be there for the tear down so there wouldn’t be any question about the desired outcome. They continually wanted to change the design. I will go to another forum with photos and specifics about the poor workmanship. The final blow come when they drilled into the brick patio to prepare for the steps. The original deck did not encroach onto the brick, and the were planning on going out another 18 inches! The builder was planning on one 8 ¼″ step rather than two 5 1/​5″ steps as the contract clearly showed!
The owner Gary finally arrived and after much discussion said — «If we correct our mistake we will be out of business!» I had compromised on many of there «changes» due to the lack of the builder not being able to think ahead. I was not able to compromise on the deck being enlarged and having only one step.
I had paid them for 40% of the contract plus a side job of some dry rot repair on a water heater shed. They did not finish the shed as they cut the sheeting wrong twice and I believe were afraid to tell the boss they needed more material.
There was much blame among themselves for there mistakes. The lead carpenter (Travis) blamed his helper for placing new piers on the wrong side of the string.
I actually thought the builder Travis could build fairly well but our deck was somewhat involved and he could not THINK. He didn’t have a plan for the second story or how to build around our oak tree.
I put most of the blame on the owners of the company. They took on a project that was WAY out of their league. They failed to communicate with their workers the contract or desired outcome. They did not inspect the job as it progressed but we’re busy building fences in Napa. They were trying to be a deck company with slick advertising and employing a real builder to do the work for them. They should stick to fences. They cannot build decks. When they make a mistake they expect the owner to pay for it.

Great company. These guys do excellent work. They built me a fence at a very good price and made it look I payed allot more.
Kept everything clean and I will definitely use them again and recommend them to anyone that needs a deck or fence.

When it comes to replacing a redwood fence, «G&G Deck and Fence» are the best when it comes to quality workmanship. Their fence team replaced our 100 feet redwood fence and a gate in just 2 days. We had 3 different estimates and theirs was in line with the other contractors. If one wants a cheap fence, use your landscaper. But if one wants a quality product and workmanship that will last for years, give them a call and you will be glad you did, because «G&G Fence and Decks» its all they do and they will give you a written 15 year guarantee.

I was very impressed with Gary, Greg and their crews. We needed a fence replaced and a deck rebuilt. The fence guys, led by Luis, were awesome. Fast, efficient and high quality. Great fence materials, pressure treated posts and horizontal support boards and true one inch redwood planks were used. Cleanup was very tidy. You won’t be disappointed with them for your fence project.
As to the deck, originally, we were just going rebuild the stairs, benches and some of the trim. As Steve and Noah got into it, there was rot all the way to the support structures. So we had them rebuild the deck… and I am glad they did. The final product is beautiful.
One caution, Steve is like an artist. And so he takes his time to do it right. You need to be patient and let him do it on his own schedule. I watched while he rejected about half as many 2×6 deck planks as he used. It takes time but in the end, you get a product that is better than anyone else is making.
Gary is the customer relations guy and estimator. Very professional. great outfit.

Not sure, why Unilocal is not showing first review. But G&G did an excellent job on our deck from start to finish late last year. We have recommended them to our neighbors who have called them for other work also. We feel there work is top notch.

What a great crew and quality fence. They work fast and didn’t skip any corners. Great quality work. They were very courteous and really listened to my specific needs and desires. I had a difficult gate to build and they did better than I could have imagined.

I would like to say a few words about G&G, in addition to my wife, Ruby’s rave reviews, for I joyfully celebrate excellence, whenever I encounter it. G&G built us a lovely, extremely strong pergola and backyard fence — that turned out to be a work of art — clearly able to last and please us for decades. (I think the results would do well in a tornado)
1. THE COMPANY, CONTRACT, HIGHEST STANDARDS: Gary and Greg (G and G) have assembled a marvelous firm of the highest professional standards. We count ourselves extremely fortunate to have found them. Gary directed the overall project for us. Easy to talk to, superb listeners, brilliant planners, discriminating selectors of materials — and diligent keeper of promises — including extremely accurate (and fair) cost and time estimates. Their careful attention to detail was astounding. Further, they were trusted advisors, throughout the projects, who helped steer us away from erroneous decisions. They were so fast that the work-​area was gorgeously different, at the end of each work day (4 days for the pergola and 4 days for the fence). As our fence was constructed, they were careful to insure that the area was secure from intruders, during and by the end of each work day.
2. THE WORK TEAMS AND PROCESS: All work was done, on-​time, with incredible conscientiousness by two 3-​man teams of skilled, dedicated, craftsmen [including Gary’s father (also named Gary), Steve, Greg, Luis, Jose, Cesar]. These were happy, kind, proud, skilled men who worked together like a fine symphony (it was fun just to watch them in action) We ended up with seven new friends and we’ll never forget them. He had to get a Pittsburg business license as part of the permit-​process and took care of it in his stride. Naturally, we had changes (and a few things had to be undone to work them in – ONLY because we two customers sometimes changed our minds — as work progress inspired new ideas in us – and we had a flexible company on our side) — all cheerfully and immediately dealt with. They are prompt in responding to emails and phone calls — and are backed by a fine, reliable administrative staff.
3. THE RESULTS: This is a firm that knows how to get things done — right. I would, without the slightest hesitation, recommend them to any who are in need of a happy result, which exceeds their wildest expectations. Truly, this is one of life’s true bargains.
4. ETERNAL PROOF: And, the results speak for themselves — in Unilocal’s photo gallery and my wife, Ruby’s, comments, you’ll see some of the pictures we took. Neighbors love it too. Many in our 114-​home housing colony have stopped to compliment and inquire — for this has enhanced our part of the community, as well as our home. Estimate: requesting estimate til the time that Gary came to our home was faster than other craftsmen with the same Unilocal ratings as theirs. Written estimate was very reasonable, detailed, and was prepared quickly.
Construction: All of the upgrades requested before and during were also calculated and reasonable no slowdown in the construction.
Materials: we used heart redwood and doug fir or the entire project. Absolutely gorgeous
Crews: a great team they were scheduled and showed up on time ready to work. All were hard workers and easy to work with. We highly recommend them. THEY ARE THE BEST!!!

We called G&G to request a bid to replace our front fences and gates. We had little to go on other than a good Unilocal review and a nice web page. Gary promptly stopped by develop a bid and we were immediately impressed with his attentiveness to detail and knowledge of fence material and construction types. Based on their bid and followup, we decided to hire them and are completely pleased with the entire transaction. They did everything you hope a contractor will do — they confirmed arrival the day before their appointment, the crew arrived on-​time and was polite and professional, they worked non-​stop till the job was completed and they left the yard exactly as they found it.
