Wicked Whisk

Perhaps the best known burger from the Petrol Station’s menu (
) is the Rancor, a beast of an Angus beef burger with bacon, bacon, and more bacon, topped with a fried egg — fully living up to its portcullis-​prone Star Wars namesake. Finishing one of these monstrosities is a feat unto itself, as patrons tackle the towering patty, lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onion crowned with crispy bacon and oozing with runny yolk. All of the burgers at Petrol are good, especially the lamb burger, but the Rancor is iconic, and almost as synonymous with the bar as their craft beer selection. Though patrons have had to go without their Rancors while the kitchen is undergoing renovation, there has been a steady stream of food trucks keeping bellies full. But only one truck has seen fit to pay homage to that epic burger: the Wicked Whisk.
It was sort of gilding-​the-​lily, but the Wicked Rancor did an admirable job of recreating the classic. It was a bit smaller than the Petrol version, but the beef patty was a perfect medium-​just-​shy-​of-​medium-​rare, with runny egg crispy at the edges, expertly sliced fresh veggies and the coup de grâce sorghum-​candied bacon, all on a lightly toasted bun with Japanese-​inspired mayo. Petrol proprietor Ben Fullelove eyed the proceedings curiously, asking me how the effort came off. I assured him the original can’t be topped, but the Wicked Whisk version was excellent, particularly with the house-​made chips I ordered on the side, dusted with a Cajun cayenne seasoning, and a cold craft brew from the taps.
The Wicked Whisk is part of a larger catering company, so they have considerable culinary resources at their disposal. They can work your private event, or you can just track down the food truck for some of their scrumtrulescent fare, like the kimchi wings, pork belly udon, or the Saint Arnold Santo-​braised pork bolillo they’re always tweeting about.
It’s barely 9 am, but like Will Hunting, I’m wicked hungry already.

Wicked Wisk= Wicked good! The el bolillo is the way to go for me: pulled pork marinated in Saint arnold beer, plantains, chile aioli, beautiful roll (the namesake for the sandwich).
They’ve got a number of offerings that just sound amazing (kimchi chicken wings!) but so far the El Bolillo has been too irresistible!

After trying several items on the menu i decided it was time to review…
First off I want to say I have loved it all, my favorite is the Texas melt. OOOHHHH so yummy! the burger is juicy and perfectly cooked with an awesome char on the outside, topped with melty creamy peanut butter, jalapeño jam, super crispy awesome bacon (I really don’t like bacon, but it goes perfect with the burger and peanut butter) this sandwich and all its components are a match made in heaven! Now onto Emma’s wings, let’s just say crunchy, sticky and you’ll crave them everyday till you get them again! The pork bolillo was just so good, I was so full and kept pushing on, the plantains were carmalized just right the cheese was so yummy on the pork and the pork was just soooo good! I absolutely loved the creamed corn crab crouquets the batter was to die for, you bite in almost like a crab cake but super creamy and not overpowered by crab just a perfect amount, love love them! last but for sure not least the crab and brie flat bread the bread was so good followed by sweet flakes (real unlike a lot of places) of crab meat, with melted brie seasonal sweet cherry tomatoes oh it all just melded so perfectly together! can’t wait to eat another. All in all I have enjoyed every bite from Wicked Whisk and so has my husband. One thing to remember go with an open mind food trucks are not restaurants with unlimited storage and space, they run out and that’s just part of it! Know that when you get there everything is great, try something outside your normal comfort zone, you’ll be glad you did!

Food trucks are one of the hottest trends in urban dining. If you’re in central Houston or Austin, you have dozens of options for fast, affordable street food that puts fast food chains to shame. But if you’re in the suburbs, your choices are far more limited.
Pioneering the food truck culture in the Woodlands is the Wicked Whisk food truck, a new truck from ninja chef Jay Stone. Jay’s truck is a big, black Mercedes van, decked out with a state-​of-​the-​art mobile kitchen, plasma screen menu, music, and exterior lighting.
But as cool as the truck is, we’re here for the food. Our attention was immediately drawn to the Texas Melt, a hefty burger featuring hand-​formed Angus beef, applewood-​smoked bacon, a schmeer of peanut butter, and housemade jalapeño jam, all on a fluffy cheddar roll.
Biting into this substantial burger revealed a perfectly prepared medium-​rare patty, rocking an aggressive char. It was juicy without being runny, and comported itself with a bold, beefy swagger. The crispy applewood-​smoked bacon added a nice accent, and we were pleasantly surprised by the creamy peanut butter flavor, which melded beautifully. The mild jalapeño jam was a wonderful finishing note, with plenty of flavor but only a smidgen of heat. Even burger purists will enjoy this outstanding burger.
On subsequent visits, we tried the outstanding bolillo — braised, pulled pork, friend plantains, smoky cheddar, and a peppery aoli on a fresh, toasted roll make for a very satisfying sandwich. We also sampled the fascinating pork belly sliders, dressed with a minted cucumber — a unique flavor that really made for a delicious slider.
The only downside of the Wicked Whisk food truck is that currently (as of April 2012) they’re only in the Woodlands on Thursdays at lunchtime, and their location on Robinson road is a bit out of the way. But we keep going back; they’re worth the drive.

Tried a few items on their menu and i really liked the chicken larb. I tried the beef rice balls and they werent too good. My coworker tried the bollilo and he really liked it.
Next week i’ll hopefully try the chicken wings.

Was finally able to try this place out at the Urban Harvest Market in front of City Hall. I arrived about 1240 and they already ran out of one item on their menu which is really a shame. I ended up getting the rice w/​sesame seeds, korean beef, and kim chi. Like any catering business their food wasn’t horrible but it was far from being good. For a whopping $ 10 you get one cup of rice which was over cooked and had a slight crunch to it. The beef was good, well seasoned, but served at room temperature and only given 4 slices. Then there is the kim chi, its your standard kim chi, nothing special to it and you only get about ¼ a cup. For $ 10 at any korean restaurant you get unlimited rice and kim chi so naturally I felt the meal was way overpriced. At least the service was fast.

Tried the Wicked Food truck (part of Wicked Whisk catering) when they came to Urban Harvest market outside of City Hall. It was late afternoon and they seemed to be running low on just about everything. Ended up splitting a pulled pork sandwich with plaintains with a friend. There was a massive amount of meat in this thing. The plaintains were an especially nice touch, and I liked the concept, but the sandwich could definitely have been better. There was way too much pulled pork in it, and it wasn’t drained enough when they put it on the sandwich, because the bottom slice of bread got incredibly soggy. I really, really hate soggy bread. It made it almost impossible to eat and my hands looked like I was bathing in meat instead of eating it. Also, there was no spicy kick at all to the pork itself, even though it tasted good and was very moist.
Advice:
— Take a measure of how much business comes in during lunch and stock food accordingly
— Amp up the heat/​flavor on the pulled pork
— Cut down on the grease/​water/​liquid that gets transferred over with the meat
— Toast the bread so it holds up more
The menu ideas looked promising but I think they need a little more time to refine everything. I’ll give them another chance sometime at the start of lunch rush and hope things work out a little better.
