BAKERY?! no, and calling yourself a «cuban bakery» is offensive to cubans and misleading. its like a cuban café/bistro thing way more than it is a bakery. and the croquetta i bought was a frozen one they just fried. if you want cuban bakery items, you are better off at your local publix… or drive a little further and go to brazo fuerte on 16th that is a real cuban bakery with delicious croquettas!

Ok so I went for happy hour and enjoyed the tostones rellenos con camarones — green plantains stuffed with shrimp DELICIOUS! Also had a cortadito I must say it was great. I went back for lunch and had the grilled chicken breast with grilled onions, rice and maduros — sweet plantains also very good. Once again had a cortadito which was still great! Nice atomsphere, parking available friendly staff.

We had high hopes for a new bakery café in the Gables area, but our first visit was a disaster. The service was very, very sloppy, and we had a tag team of two waitresses. One waitress would take our drink order and leave, then another would come and ask for our drink order again. Same with our meal, coffee, check, etc. Two people in our party ordered the special of the day–«mahi mahi with 2 sides». Only when the food arrived did they discover the fish was fried, as it was not mentioned at all in the description. Another person asked for a ham and cheese sandwich and was instead served a hamburger(which was then corrected, after an additional wait). Finally, I ordered a turkey club wrap. When the wrap arrived it had exactly ONE slice of deli turkey inside. There was maybe 1oz. of turkey in the turkey wrap. I had to take out all of the meat and re-wrap it all on one side of the sandwich to have anything resembling a turkey wrap. I can at least admit it was tasty, though. That said, the cuban coffee and cortaditos were *excellent*. Hopefully this place can work out the kinks, because we do need this type of restaurant in the area.

Ok, even though I make fun of the fact that it’s named after a gay club, I have to admit this bakery is pretty awesome. Coral Gables really needed this! A Latin bakery with so many options, you’ll have a hard time deciding on just one thing. Azucar offers everything from breakfast and lunch combos to pastelitos and cakes. They even have burgers and deliver for free which is kinda a big deal in the Gables. We recently had a big event at the office and were in need of catering, for the simple stuff: pastelitos, bocaditos and a cake. We order a butter cream cake that was big enough for at least 300 people and about 600 pastelitos and bocaditos. Azucar truly exceeded our expectations. Everything was fresh and yummy. I definitely recommend this place if you’re in the Gables area and in need of a million options for breakfast and/or lunch. I still have so many damn things to try, it’s going to take me a while…
