Hands down the worst most backwards financial institution I have seen. Doesn’t reply to E-​mails, transfers you to three different people, blames any and all errors on the computer system, has yet to take any actions to correct any mistakes, ¾ the tellers are rude and incompetent, it’s like a daycare for adults, makes me really appreciate all the things Hills Bank does for me on a daily bases without batting an eye.

Have done business with UICCU for the past 30 years. Over the past 5 years, have seen a rapid decline in customer service. Previous posters have already covered most of the key issues. They have lost our business. I would not recommend this institution to anyone… there are much better options in the area where customer service is #1.

Discrimination is their policy!
According to this bank’s policy, if someone signs a check over to you, the person who signed it over to you has to physically go to the location with you in order for you to deposit it.
This is physically impossible for many people, such as the sick, disabled, hospitalized, those who live in another state, work during bank hours, etc etc etc…
Even if the person is willing to call in and provide proof of identity, they will not accept the check. Even if the check is from someone in your family with the same last name as you. Even with proof of social security number, security questions, mother’s maiden name, etc etc…
Even offering to Facetime or Skype the bank, they will not accept anything short of a physical visit.
If someone could go with you to the bank, wouldn’t they just have done that instead of writing the check over to you? Isn’t that the whole point of signing checks over?
This policy not only makes no sense, but it is open discrimination, unrealistic, and causes hardship for people who need to access their money.
All my family members are closing our accounts with this unethical bank.

If you have the option for this bank and it seems like the tiniest better value-​do not bank here. They truly do not believe in customer service or manners of any kind.
The ONLY person that has ever been apologetic was the person in HR that called me when they lost my check of almost $ 500 and were going to make me repay AND fine me. To the point where we almost had to get a lawyer involved before they solved the problem because the mistake was on THEIR end. That’s the first time they lost my money, it’s been 8 times since then (nine counting the first.) Eight. EIGHT TIMES where a bank did not apologize or take responsibility for their mistakes.
It’s gotten to the point where they don’t send me customer surveys anymore because I bring down the average so much.
It’s so unfortunate that they feel like they have to do business this way and I often feel anxious and unsure about trusting them with my money.
Once my car is paid off, I will never do business with them again.
I should have done the higher interest rate at Hills Bank, I would have been happy to be paying the salaries of people that care about their customers.
Bottom line: avoid this place like it has Anthrax.

I wish zero stars were an option. We begin our journey in 2010 when I was a naïve freshman at Iowa. I thought that opening a checking account would be a great idea since they had a location in the memorial union. Wrong. There were fees for everything. After running up $ 20 in fees in one month I decided to stop using that account altogether and would close it out. Winter break came and went and I forgot about closing the account and just let it sit. Eight months later I received a notice from a collection agency saying that I had overdrawn my UICCU account by over $ 100 and now my account was in collection! I called UICCU and asked how I could have possibly overdrawn the account since I hadn’t used my debit card in eight months and there was almost $ 200 in the account when I stopped using it. I was told by the unhelpful woman on the phone that there was nothing she could do and I needed to go to the Coralville location during one of the two hours they’re open each day. When I was able to get to the Coralville location I explained my situation to the teller and he pulled up my account. He told me I wrote a check for $ 300+ six months earlier and overdrew my account. How interesting because I NEVER had checks for that account! Apparently the signature of the person who wrote the check caused their system to read the 9 on the check as an 8 and then it withdrew the money from my account instead of theirs. The name on the check was not even remotely similar to mine. Instead of taking 2 minutes to pull up my account and view the check that had caused it to be overdrawn, they sent it straight to a collection agency. If you value your time and credit score, avoid UICCU.

Ive banked at this bank for about 10 years. I cant really say anything good about them. These are some of the problems I have with them.
1. They do not have any ATM machines on the university of Iowa campus.
2. The ATMs that they do have don’t work half the time when you try and deposit a corporate check. It tells you that it cant read it and you end up having to go to the bank during business hours to deposit your check.
3. Horrible customer service. They randomly sent me a new ATM card saying that they have reason to believe that my previous card had been compromised. I activated the new card and then tried to use it at Costco. The card was rejected. I called customer service and they told me they would send me a new card in 7 – 10 days. They wouldnt overnight it unless I paid $ 35.
4. They do not have real customer service after hours… only basic stuff like lost/​stolen card.
5. They do not have any electronic check deposit (unless the check is more than $ 100) or iphone app to deposit checks by photo like other banks do…

Terrible services outside of student checking, many hoops to jump through regarding credit cards and various functions.
Would certainly recommend a different bank. And I used UICCU for 4 years. Fed up.

UICCU sums up everything that is wrong with modern banking. Their lack of service, constant greed, and anti-​customer policies make it a nightmare to do business here. I’ve had bank accounts with close to a dozen different banks — including the national ones — and this has by far been my worst experience.
1) Greed is all that motivates UICCU. If they can find a way to charge you a fee, they will. UICCU cares only about making money, not about customer welfare.
Under my plan, I’m charged a fee everytime I use my card as debit and whenever I use a non-​UICCU ATM. This is a problem since the credit union shut down almost all of its direct campus ATMs, meaning that you either get stuck with the fee or effectively have no ATM access.
Once I misplaced my checkbook and asked them for one temporary check. They printed it off. I thought it was awfully nice of them and then I saw a charge against my account for a few dollars.
UICCU will kick customers when they’re already down. When my card was lost/​stolen, I was told that I’d be charged $ 15 – 20 for a replacement. Even the mega-​banks like Chase have never imposed that kind of fee on me. The worst part is that my replacement card never showed up. That was a sign that I needed to bank elsewhere.
2) UICCU employs hyper-​aggressive, deceptive sales tactics. Also aimed at earning them money to your detriment.
For several weeks, everytime I came in, I was bombarded with sales pitches about their new credit card. I told them every time that I was not interested and that I probably wouldn’t qualify anyway (as a student with low income). They persisted in asking me for weeks after that. Finally my resolve broke down and I asked for more information. I explained my situation to the banker, that I had only RA-​income and income from a small business that was a few months old. He assured me that I qualified and would receive the new loan, so I went ahead and signed on the dotted line. Days later he told me that there was a problem with my application, since I didn’t have enough year-​round income (which I already warned him about). I sincerely tried to follow up and get the application through but received no response. I did nothing but waste my time and injure my credit score by giving UICCU a fair chance.
The bottom line is this — don’t bank with UICCU. There are few incentives and you do so at your own peril. If you roll the dice and bank at a random credit union, you almost certainly be happier. It does not get worse than this.

We handed over 2 car titles for a loan to make some home repairs. We were told that if we needed the titles after a year or two before the loan was payed in full, we would be able to get them as long as we made all the payments on time up to that point. 2 years in, we asked for one of the titles and they handed it over no questions asked. With 3 payments left to go on the loan, it was time to buy a new car so I asked for the 2^nd title. They told me they do not release titles until the loan is payed in full. We have made every payment on time for 4 years and have 3 payments left and they won’t release the title on a $ 500 car. That’s absolute crap. Why did our initial loan officer tell us it would be no problem? Why did they give one title back but not the other? And the teller was especially snarky about the situation. At least the loan officer I spoke with was apologetic.

The 4% checking is great, we got a really low rate on a car loan and we were able to get a great home loan. The folks here are professional, very friendly and they often have coffee and cookies for your enjoyment upon entrance!

I started an account with the UICCU when my car dealership established it had the lowest rate for my loan. I have never looked back. Well staffed so there are no lengthy waits for simple transactions, and a very comfortable sitting area for waiting for loan officers. When financing a new house, the loan officer truly made me feel I was his only customer, and gave me great advice on when to lock in on a rate. One star was lost due to a rude teller, but it only happened once, and I have never seen her again.
