Clothes Mentor – Cordova

The staff is so rude especially a lady named Janis. She was so cold when I came back in to get my cash for my clothes. No eye contact and just no customer service skills whatsoever. I WILL NOT BE GOING BACK. I do not recommend this place at all. Not to mention that they low ball you on your items.

Good store if you want to buy something. But don’t get your hopes up if you want to sell anything! They won’t buy anything unless it is brand new with tags on it or barely only worn once. And then they only offer $ 2-​$ 3 MAX for each item. One of the items they purchased from me still had a $ 60 price tag on it and they offered me $ 3.00 for it. You can make more money donating stuff to Goodwill and taking a tax write-​off! But like I said… If you are there to shop/​buy, they have decent stuff

I have visited this location with a wide selection of dressy, business and casual clothes to sell. From the moment I walked in I felt a negative attitude from the staff. They were very cold and made me feel as though I was bringing in used junk they could not be bothered with.
When you walk in the door, there are bags and crates of items people are dropping up and picking up and you are left to figure where to go to start. I had many name-​brand items (many with price tags still attached) and after waiting for almost an hour was told that they were not the high quality items they buy. (I found this to be odd since I saw alot of items on the shelves that looked straight out of Wal-​Mart and quite used.)
Not a good first impression and I won’t be back.

Great atmosphere, lots of business wear. I love the fact they carry plus sizes and have a large selection. Quality of the clothing that I viewed was near new. Excellent for those who like a wardrobe of variety. Items were reasonably priced. Will definitely be a regular.

After hearing countless radio commercials for this place I decided to stop by and check it out. The store is very well organized but everything was way overpriced. I mean, they are selling USED «better brands» (read — shopping mall labels) for prices that you would find on retail clearance racks. Everything I looked at was in good condition, but if I’m buying used clothes it better be one heck of a deal. Needless to say, I didn’t buy a single thing. I MIGHT walk in this store again if they have a half-​off sale.

Awful experience. Will not go back. I drove all the way out here on the 20^th and dragged 4 bags of stuff to the door. The door was locked. They finally answered and said they had changed their mind about buying before their grand opening. I asked «Why didn’t you put that in your Facebook ad instead of saying you were still buying? «. So today we drove all the way there through massive traffic, dragged all 4 bags inside to be told we stopped buying at 6 you missed it by 10 minutes. I explained my situation but the man would not waiver. I won’t be fighting again to take stuff out there. Stuff didn’t look too good inside the store either. They are not too worried about their business when. they are so shabby to customers.

If you like thrift stores, then you are in for a treat! Organized confusion is what I like to call it!!! I love looking for treasures and in here you will find a bunch. Some of the earlier reviews are from before the store opened and maybe one after it opened. Of course if you are in the news and publicized you are going to be slammed with people coming. So any reasonable person would understand this when dropping off clothing.
The prices are fair when buying and selling, and it doesn’t matter what they offer, it is clothes you were giving away for free anyway! (duh) Forget a price tag, you were giving them to Goodwill or away to somebody, so stop complaining! I am tired of Plato’s Closet turning me down about everything because it is to «mature», I am so glad this opened in Memphis.
I bring items in every week almost. And shop almost every other day! (shrugs) I LOOOVVVVEEEE this store and will continue to buy and sell!

I agree with other reviewers. Takes too long, give you pennies. They were happy to buy everything I brought in (which was a lot), but I took many things back because of their ridiculously low offer prices. And I also agree about the Chicos point. I can buy things on sale at Chicos for less than they charge at Clothes Mentor. Their racks and merchandise in general, though, were very unappealing. I don’t think I would ever buy anything there. And it took way too long, and I was told I had to come back too. A complete waste of time! Donate your items and shop at TJ. Maxx, Marshalls, SteinMart or Macys sales.

I got to the grand opening in the afternoon so I expected the selection to be pocked over. I can see in the future that this well organized consignment store could be a place for bargains.

Nice people, crowded on first day, good selection of purses and misses clothing but need more plus sizes preferably in one section.
Scored baseball leather Coach bag and Nygard jacket. Selection will improve once women find out they can sell outright rather than wait for consignment and buy brand names at discount that are very gently owned.
Not my high end fav Clothes Heaven but I’m not living in Pasadena anymore!

RIP OFF… These people are very uneducated. I made several trips to drop off items. There seems to be no reason as to how they select their clothing. They informed me they only sold name brand clothing. They offered $ 1.60 for a silk blouse that still had the tag on it for $ 50.00, turned down two pair of dress pants from Talbot’s that both still had $ 108.00 tags on them. They offered $ 6.00 for a pair of Stuart Weitzman heels that still have a $ 250.00 sticker on them and never worn. As I glanced a few racks, I came across a pair of white Old Navy jean shorts with no hem, frayed bottoms and a Walmart solid black t shirt. They also turned down a purse with tag still attached and told me it did not match store criteria which I pointed out one just like it on a rack in a different color. They do seem to pride their self on Chico’s brand selling jeans priced at $ 20 and $ 22.00. I have bought Chico jeans on sale for 16.99. They are polite but have an air to them. They need to realize they are a Thrift Store. Don’t bother, take a few extra steps to Marshall’s or Steinmart and get just as good of a deal on NEW clothing.

I’ve sold clothes to Clothes Mentor three times now — three consecutive Saturdays.
The first time was great — short wait time and they bought 95% of what I took in.
The second and third times were a bit of a disappointment — much longer wait times (the word is spreading!) and they only bought a few items. And I took in my best stuff on the third visit so I was a little dumbfounded. I’m sure they would have explained why they rejected things if I had asked. But really it doesn’t matter.
Overall I’m pleased to get a few bucks out of my old clothes that I would have taken to Goodwill otherwise.
I’ve dealt with several different employees — including the owner — and everyone is very nice.
The racks are getting pretty full. The owner said they’ll be open to sell in mid March.
My advice — don’t take too much at a time (it’s a little embarrassing to have to walk out with as many bags/​boxes as you brought in) and be prepared to run errands in Cordova while you wait. My last time in, the wait was over 2 hours.

I have to say, I was extremely disappointed with my experience here today. They are only buying clothes right now (not sure when they will begin actually selling them), so I stopped by around 3pm with 6 items. I was promptly greeted and asked if I knew how this worked. Well, I’ve done consignment before, so I said «Yup, you look at my stuff and tell me if you want it.» The girl laughed and added that, unlike consignment, they offer cash on the spot. Ok, sounds good!
Except, when I asked if I could browse while I waited (the racks were pretty well-​stocked), I was told that I needed to come back before 6pm. Wait — come back? Confused, I explained that I live in Midtown, and drove to Cordova specifically to sell these items. I was told that my items would be checked over in turn, and that I would need to come back in a few hours. But, even though they normally require that you return the same day, she assured me that I could come back at my convenience. Further attempts on my part to explain that no, I did not want to come back at all, fell on deaf ears, so I beat feet for the parking lot, figuring I’d sort it out later…
…leaving my driver’s license behind (which they require for the drop-​off process, and had not returned to me at that point). A guy came out looking for me as I headed back in, and I explained once again the incredible inconvenience of having to return, since I don’t live anywhere near Cordova and I was led to believe that «cash on the spot» meant, you know, sometime around now-​ish, not drop and come back in a few hours or days.
Apparently he is the owner/​manager/​guy in charge, and he told me that I could come back at my convenience or have someone else come back for me (even though, again, that’s against the rules), but I could not cut in line to have my items looked at sooner. So some rules can be broken, but not others, apparently. I could call around 5pm, he said, to see if they had gotten to my stuff, but that was all he could do for me… and he then launched into a lecture on how we are «blessed to be vertical and breathing,» he is «blessed with so much business» which is causing the delay, I am «lucky to have a car and a bed,» yada yada. Sorry, but I came to sell some clothes, not for a sermon on how lucky I am!
I made my escape at that point and found some errands to run in Cordova, which took me till about 4:30pm. I called and asked if they had gotten to my stuff, was asked for my name at least twice, overheard everyone being asked, and told that no, they hadn’t gotten to me. I asked if they would in another 20 minutes (since I was about 20 minutes away), and was told… maybe. Fine. I showed up again around 5pm,
I waited patiently while they helped some ladies with multiple trash bags of clothes (yikes!) that were left in front of the counter for me to trip over, and was then told by the same guy that my stuff was, yes, still 20 minutes out. Ok, I said, just give it back to me please and I’ll be done. He asked if I was sure (I was), and then proceeded to hunt around for the basket with my stuff. I was a little confused about how he knew how long it would take, if he didn’t know where my basket was! He finally produced my items, and gave me a loyalty card fully punched-​out for a 20% discount on a purchase, which I’m sure I’ll never use, since, as I said repeatedly, I live in Midtown and do not ever go to Cordova.
Overall, it was a much more frustrating and time-​consuming process than I had been led to believe. In the amount of time the manager guy spent telling me why my clothes hadn’t been looked at, why I had to come back, etc. etc., he could have just LOOKED at my whopping 6 items, made a decision, and sent me on my way. Why no one did that, I have no idea, but it would have made for a much better experience!
Also, at least while they are only buying, their hours are 12pm-​6pm on Saturdays and closed on Sundays — apparently the hours on the card I was given are for when they start selling as well. Very confusing, so I suggest checking hours before you go, as well as being prepared to come back in a day or two to collect your «cash on the spot.» Though, I don’t actually suggest going here at all.
