The Corning Community YMCA is a non-profit organization that focuses on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Our mission is to put Judeo-Christian principles into practice through programs that build a health spirit, mind, and body for all.

History

Established in 1966.

The Corning YMCA originally opened in the late 1800’s following other Y’s already in existence in Elmira and Addison. It ceased operations in the early 1900’s but was reborn in 1966 by a group from the First Methodist Church of Corning. The new Corning YMCA operated out of many office sites from 1966 to 1978. In 1972, the YMCA was working out of the newly renovated Riverside Imperial Club building, a gift from Ingersoll-Rand Company. The facility and the property were completely destroyed during the flood of ’72. Although a major set-back, the YMCA board and staff still operated out of a small house in Riverside providing programs to the community. Then, in 1977, The New York State Armory was gifted to the Corning YMCA from the Corning Glass Works Company. The facility has since grown over the years with the addition of the Corning Glassworks Activity Center in 1981, the completions of the Nautilus and Fitness centers (Studio’s A & B) in 1986, and the brand new Aquatics center in 2001.
