Defy Gravity

I came here through ClassPass and I am so glad I did. I am a frequent cycler and I am great at cardio-​based exercises, but I always struggle with things like pilates because I’m not flexible and I don’t have much core strength. However, the Bodhi Suspension is awesome. It’s so much fun to use, you don’t even find yourself worrying about the difficulty or if it burns (which it does!). I’ve done the split class which is a perfect mix. Your body gets worn out from spin and the 30 minutes of pilates after feels really good because it stretches you out.
Very, very nice instructors. The classes are small so you get a lot of attention. I feel very welcome here and I’m glad I found a place I can mix up my normal schedule with.

Love this place! I found Defy Gravity through ClassPass and have taken their spin classes, Pilates and «Pilates Solution» classes. I really enjoy Nandini’s Pilates class. She is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly and accommodates my injury (broken tailbone) without holding up others in the class.
The equipment and studio are always clean and the classes are always challenging.
All the instructors I’ve taken have been very welcoming and professional and always take time to explain what’s going on. They also offer adjustments and modifications without being condescending and make sure you’re in the proper form so you don’t hurt yourself.
They push you to your edge and you always get a great workout!

Instructors & Owners (Laura & Shannon) are all excellent and professional in teaching outstanding spin & pilates classes. The instructors works individually with each student to assure you are comfortable with the equipment and set up properly for the spin class & reformer/​pilates class. The instructors go above and beyond to make sure all in attendance get an amazing work-​out, free of injury, leaving the student with the desire to return soon for another great athletic start to your day!
The studio is perfect for teenagers and adults of any age!

I love this studio and it’s owners, Laura and Shannon. The equipment is state of the art and the classes are challenging and interesting. Perfect combo to kick your butt and start your day off energized. The split class is half spinning and half Pilates, and it is the exact right amount of time in each to keep you working at maximum potential in each.

Best cycling and most innovative Pilates studio! The Defy Gravity Studio instructors are super knowledgeable, and very inspiring. They help foster a sense of community, while making sure you’re butt is kicked by the time you leave. Love the workout, love the ladies there. It sure makes going to the gym all the easier on the brain. The body always loves it.

This boutique studio is a total delight-​from the knowledgeable, professional & motivated owners (Laura and Stephanie) to their fabulous team of instructors-​what a positive, pristine, pleasant place to try some new classes! (The Split is a favorite-​half spin class half pilates.) Bravo!

Defy Gravity is beyond 5 Stars, they are 10! The instructors are so knowledgeable, personable, and motivating. I have not had one bad class there even when I have dreaded going to get a workout in, I walk out feeling like a million bucks! The Cycle with Bands class burns major calories (they have consoles so you can see how many miles you ride and calories burned) and their Split class is AH-​MAZING! My favorite. ½ Cycle & ½ Pilates, a perfect combo!
Not only is the location great, the instructors phenomenal but they are always offering some sort of «extras» be it boot camp, nutritional talks, new classes or a new routine to keep the workouts new and exciting. Love, love, love Defy Gravity. I am a devotee!

What a workout! I purchased a Groupon and have tried The Split Class twice now. You get an intense 30 min cardio workout in the cool/​clean cycling studio and then move over to the open air pilates studio for core and strength training for the second half. It is the perfect workout packed into an hour, impossible to get bored with this one. The two owners Laura and Shannon were so helpful, it was my first time ever on the bike. They were genuinely kind, interested in making sure I was using the equipment properly and no sales push at all, just friendly. The same experience the second visit. I can see how you can get hooked! I’ve never written a Unilocal review before, but this was worth mentioning.

I looove this place. Seriously, everything about it is great, so much that I hesitate to post a review lest all the classes completely fill up!
The owners, Shannon and Laura, are amazing, as is all their staff. I’ve both «spun» and done Pilates before, but whether you’re a newbie or have been doing either for years, they are welcoming and adjust your experience to your level and needs. They clearly stress attention to detail and try to provide a great workout for everyone, regardless of experience level and potential «problems.» I regularly have wrist issues (for example) and they always help me work around it.
The spinning classes are guided, but self-​paced, so you can push yourself as hard (or as little) as you want. It’s motivating, but unintimidating. And the unique mix of Pilates they do with the EXO chairs and the reformer together gives you a more intense workout then just the reformer alone. They take great care to explain technique as well, which I can’t say is the case for other Pilates studios in the area I’ve been to. My personal favorite is The Split — 30 minute of spinning and 30 minutes of Pilates — it’s the best overall workout I’ve ever had.
So, you obviously should go!

So after a bumpy start, I came back for a second try. This time, Shannon showed me how to use the exo chair so I didn’t feel like I was going to break my face. After that little intro, I felt much more stable on the equipment and more relaxed. I also felt more confident, like this is something I could probably get the hang of.
The sessions here seem to be diverse and they also seem to fly by. It’s like an hour disappears in this studio. I’m honestly grateful for the intensity here. To be honest, it’s a lot more intense than the Stott pilates reformer I learned on.
So after a second try, I’m excited to finish my series of 5 classes from my Groupon and see what signing up might look like.

Love, love, love. I’ve taken classes w/​both the owners, and they were both great workouts. The spin bikes are new, and bonus for the pedals which accomodate both types of clips (Look and SPD, if you care) plus cages if you haven’t invested in spin shoes yet (you should).
Multiple pilates apparatus, chairs/​reformers/​etc, and everything looks new and clean. The only issue I could see would be parking, once this place gets really busy the lot isn’t huge but that’s what you get in CDM.
I originally came here with a Groupon, but I’ll for sure be re-​upping for a standing class package. Warning — be ready to sweat!

Defy Gravity is the most amazing gym I think I have ever been to and it is solely because of the staff. Don’t get me wrong, the studio is great too. The equipment is all top of the line and taken care of nicely. Due to my schedule I am not certain I will really get to go back that often, but if I could I would be there at least 5 days a week. I highly encourage anyone who is looking for a great Pilates and/​or spin class the check-​out defy gravity. You will not regret it.

This place is great! Laura and Shannon are so nice and friendly and they made me feel really comfortable on my first class. It was my first Pilates class ever and I had an awesome workout! We did 30 minutes on the Pilates chair then 30 minutes on the reformer. I’ll be coming every week for a Pilates class now and will try the cycling too!
I’ll definitely recommend this place to my girlfriends!

This place is the bomb for indoor cycling… Excellent music, wonderful instruction mixed with a warm and welcoming and a non-​judgmental environment. Makes this an extremely awesome place to spin.
No Dancing on the bike, none of that «round the world» crap. You don’t have to fight for a bike. I really like this place.

I recently bought a groupon here for 5 classes because I wanted to try out a different kind of workout– I had never done a pilates reformer class nor a spin class.
My friend and I went to the Pilates Solution class one night and we were a little nervous and didn’t completely know what to expect. Right away we were greeted with some of the most friendly and welcoming and non-​judgmental fitness instructors ever! I felt like I was completely welcome to come and try everything out without feeling like a weirdo.
The Pilates Solution class was split in half and one group started at the reformers and the others started at the EXO chair. As a newbie, I didn’t even know that you don’t wear shoes for pilates! There were three of us that particular session on the reformers together and I literally felt like I was getting a personal training session. The instructor was patient with me being a newbie, helpful in teaching us how to use the equipment and get into the right positions, and very clear in her instructions– which is important when you are new and would have no clue what to do on your own! Then on the EXO chair, our instructor was helpful, clear and concise, and totally patient with us newbies! It was fun, challenging, and a fantastic workout. On the EXO chair, I still felt like I was getting a completely personal experience!
Then, my friend and I tried out a spin class. We both had never taken a spin class. I got there about 10 – 15 minutes early and the instructor right away helped me out, got the bike set up for me, and showed me how to get it set up as well as what to expect in the class. She took time to show me how to adjust the bike and once I got on, it only took a few minutes for me to feel like I knew what I was doing. The music was great for the workout and the fans in the room made me feel like I was right there pedaling next to Cancellara and Wiggins (my husband watches cycling and I’ve heard a lot of it in the background the last month…). The class was AWESOME! I loved it! I don’t have another spin class to compare it to, but I’ve taken enough fitness classes, to really see that the instructors have perfected the art of personal attention to each of their clients. There were 8 of us in the class, and of course since we were new, my friend and I were in the very back row– but after the first class, I feel like I could move up a row and be fine with it. The instructor during the class was motivating, energetic, fun, challenging, and everything I needed to huff and puff on the bike. I felt like I was a part of a group class yet still got enough personalization that I didn’t feel lost at any point and I felt like I got a great workout afterward. It burns to good!
The studio is clean and modern. The parking is fine and there’s even a small lot right there, plus the regular street parking right there. All of the equipment is new and it gets wiped down after every use. The online website is well made and user friendly. And again, the instructors are personable, helpful, welcoming, challenging, motivating, and fun. A great place to workout for sure!

I’ve been to this studio twice. They’re pretty new, but seem to have things moving along pretty smoothly. I like spinning, so I looked online to see where the good ones were… and this place popped up #1 on the list! Their equipment is nice and new, the studio is kept very clean, & the spin class I took was a great challenge! I usually have to go all the way to Hollywood to take a great spin class, but now there’s one in Orange County that is amazing! If you love spinning, this place will kick your butt. I especially liked the Tabata section of the class. Not all places do that, so it was great. :)

We are spending a week in Newport and happened upon Defy Gravity by chance and I have to say what a stroke of luck. I recently started Pilates and take reformer classes up in Northern California and classes by Defy Gravity make the classes I’m taking look silly. Laura was my first instructor and she was awesome. Defy Gravity does 30 minutes on the Pilates chair then 30 minutes on the reformer. Wow, what a workout. I am 200lb man in fairly good shape and both instructors really wring out the most in you. Shannon especially was excellent in how she instucts you. The detail in how Shannon instructs is what stands out. I’d move to Newport just to take her classes. I am looking forward to taking another class before we leave. Thanks Shannon. Also the new reformers they have are incredible machines.

This studio just opened and it is GREAT! Went today for the start of their Première Week, which ends Thursday Jan 19^th and will definitely be back tomorrow! Today I did a half and half class (first 30 min spinning then 30 min Pilates) — AWESOME workout…
The place is clean and the instructors are friendly and informative.
Looking forward to more classes there… highly recommended!!!
