When I was a grade schooler, back in the day, there were 40 or 50 kids in a classroom to one teacher. Conditions were difficult, to say the least. The nuns and lay teachers did not spare the rod nor spoil any child. It was challenging in many ways to attend this school. I did get an excellent education.
After having been a teacher, I can understand better the pressures the nuns and lay teachers were under, and why they acted the way they did, but without condoning their actions.
I believe times have changed and that the methods of keeping order and disciplining are different now – I hope so. I still believe the quality of education I got was the highest. I doubt that quality has changed.
