Specialties

At Jake’s Place we work with local and outlying shelters, as well as the general public, to rescue, foster, socialize and rehome cats and kittens. Our goal is also to educate and create awareness about the plight of stray, abandoned and homeless animals, the importance of spaying & neutering, and the necessity of committing to care for your pet for his/​her entire lifetime.

Jake’s Place Cat Rescue holds Marin Cat Adoption Events every Sunday at Petco San Rafael in the Montecito Shopping Center 12noon-​4pm.

History

Established in 2013.

The volunteers at Jake’s Place are a diverse group of dedicated animal lovers. Some of us have worked in rescue before, some are new to it. Some of us have known each other for years, others more recently involved. Having all come together in the last few years and finding that we had the same passion to help cats, we started thinking about the possibilities of putting our various expertise to work in creating something wonderful. While Jake’s Place is a relatively new organization, our work goes back 17 years and our energy and drive is stronger than ever. We are committed to rescuing responsibly, fostering in loving & caring homes and finding the best possible forever homes.

I had been thinking about getting a cat but wasn’t sure about making a total commitment. I was in Petco in San Rafael one Sunday and stopped to look at the cats that Jake’s Place had showing for adoption. Debbie listened to my concerns and suggested I might start by fostering a cat to see if I really wanted to adopt. I decided that was a good idea so we talked some more about what kind of kitty I might want.
I decided to foster and brought home a small black male cat named Gismo. (It seems Black cats are harder to adopt, so I felt like I was doing a good thing right from the start). He was pretty shy and I had a lot of questions about being a cat owner and taking care of this cat in particular. Debbie gave me lots of info and advice. She answered all my questions and helped me understand what he needed and what he was trying to tell me with his behavior and body language. It was a big help to be able to ask questions since I never had a cat before.
Long story short, I’m what they call a foster failure and Gismo is here to stay. He’s a great cat and I’m glad I stopped by and talked to Debbie. She was very friendly and honest about what I needed to know to be a good cat owner. I’m thinking of getting Gismo a friend and will be back to visit Jake’s Place again. Thanks to all the folks at Jake’s Place for all you do to help cats and kittens find good homes.

I was in Petco in San Rafael on a Sunday and saw the signs for Jake’s Place Cat Rescue, so I went to look at the kitties. They mostly try to find forever homes for older cats that get overlooked in favor of kittens. But they also had some kittens, too. All the cats are in foster homes and you can go visit most of them if you are really serious.
At Petco, the kitties were in large cages with covers so they felt safe. And each had a little bed and toys to play with. It was very clean and comfortable looking. I already have 4 cats, so I just wanted to see what Jake’s Place looked like. If I ever get another cat, then I will come to Jake’s Place and adopt an older kitty.
They also have a really nice web-​site which shows you all the kitties they have for adoption, because they can’t bring all of them to Petco at the same time.

I adopted my lovely boy kitty Max from Jakes Place. The folks were so nice and were really interested in making sure that Max and I were a good fit. Well Max is home and we are loving him and his antics. If I want to adopt another kitty, I would go to Jake’s Place first. A great group of people!

I met, Debbie, the Executive Director of Jake’s Place years ago when I’d brought back some feral kittens from Montana. She helped me in the process of finding them wonderful homes in Marin. Lucky little kittens! Debbie is dedicated and driven. One of those animal people who is also a people person. She is selfless, tireless and is in it 100% for the cats. We foster kittens for Jake’s Place now when we can. Our kids love it and it’s an easy and entertaining way to volunteer.

My sister and I tried fostering a cat through Jake’s Place, and failed. LOL. We kept the kitty! Jake’s Place is one of the nicest rescue organizations I’ve come across. If you’re looking to foster or adopt a cat in Marin, this is your go to. The founder has dedicated herself to rescuing all types of cats in need of rehoming — kittens, adults, and most touching (IMHO), seniors. I’m a cat lover (my boyfriend might say cat lady) and have always made a point of seeking out the kitties that need the most love (old, special needs, etc.). Seems Jake’s Place feels the same way and that’s why I naturally gravitated to them.
Deb is a total sweetheart and set us up with special food for Louie (he had crystals in his urethra when he was younger and eats S/​O as a preventive measure) and prepared us with a starter kit (litter box, scratching post, toys). All we needed to add was the TLC. Sometimes I head over to Petco now just to ogle the sweet cats and chat up the volunteers. They are there every Sunday. And, kitten season is just winding down, so I still get my cuddle time in with the lil’ ones before they are snapped up. But the sweeties that are 2, 3, 5, 7 years old even are just so darn appreciative of the love. They get me every time.
