The Piano Studio

I have been a student at The Piano Studio for about 6 months now. The curriculum taught there is called Simply Music. It is a «ground-​breaking music education program» developed in Australia. One of the things which makes it unique is that that the piano classes are taught in groups rather than the traditional one-​on-​one method. For me this has made a big difference. Besides making it a lot more fun, the energy and enthusiasm of the other students helps to support my learning process.
The thing which makes Simply Music most unique is that from day one you are playing enjoyable, great sounding music with both hands without reading music. The founder of Simply Music has said that «expecting students to read music before they have learned how to play, is like expecting children to read and spell before they have learned how to talk!» In other words, it’s backwards! In this method reading comes later after you’ve developed a large repertoire of music from contemporary, classical and blues genres.
The teachers at the Piano Studio are some of the most enthusiastic, friendly, fun-​loving people I know. All excellent musicians, they are also warm and patient, qualities which make for exceptional teachers. The classes are kept light and fun and the pace of the classes are geared towards student’s abilities. An effort is made to match students with those of similar learning aptitudes so students are neither bored nor overwhelmed. Although there are numerous adult groups, kids make up the bulk of the students. I wish I’d found this method when I was kid. I probably would have avoided a lot of the frustration that I encountered in my early years and be much further along! Fortunately, I’m making up for lost time and building a good foundation for a lifelong enjoyment of the piano.
