Barrett Koren, N.D.

Dr. Koren Barrett is the most knowledgeable hormone specialist I have ever had the pleasure to worked with. She is my one-​stop doctor on most of my health needs. A master at diagnosing and treating the most simple to complicated case, she has helped me heal issues that five other doctors could not. Her offices are clean, run with a friendly staff, and completely charming.
When it comes to communication and follow-​up, this staff is as good as it gets. The front office staff, Theresa and Elizabeth, are wonderful, kind and clear. I actually look forward to my visits and appreciate how compassionate and cared for I feel with every interaction. As a sensitive type, the natural approach, mixed with plain good ol’ medicine, totally works for me.

Dr. Barrett put on thyroid medication when I did not need it. I had a normal TSH and no antibodies. Per Dr. Friedman, chief of endocrinology at UCLA, she basically put me in a hypothyroid state and now have to take thyroid hormone for life. Do not let Dr. Barrett put you on thyroid medication without a full lab work up. You will regret it. Many years of pain because of her misdiagnosis.

I have ME/​CFS and there are very few doctors in the OC that are able to understand how involved it is and how to treat it. I emailed Dr. Barrett and she said she could help. That is the best email I ever wrote.
I cried at my first appointment which was an hour long. Someone finally got it. It was such a huge relief. She asked a lot of questions about my history, how I got sick, what I had done previously, and went over lab work, etc. It was very in depth.
She is smart, and informed about a lot of things including Methylation. When I talked about some things I wanted to try that she wasn’t familiar with she researched it and then wrote me a script. At one point I was worried she might «fire» me because I was doing some pretty crazy stuff on my own but she assured me she would not and is supporting my choices.
I live maybe 2 miles from Dr. Barrett but because it’s so hard for me to get out all our ½ hour followup appointments are via Skype. I don’t know why more doctors don’t do this.
The other reviewer, April B, was right when she said Dr. Barrett is not arrogant. We are partners and her only goal is to get me feeling better.
I can’t imagine not seeing Dr. Barrett. Seeing her is the best decision I’ve made in a long time.

Dr. Barrett is the best doctor I have ever worked with. She listens to all of my concerns and is thorough in seeking an answer to any problem, including referral to specialist when necessary. She never gives up on a problem. She and her staff are courteous and follow up on ever issue. She extends her connections to emails and phone calls. I was very sick when I first saw her, but now am in good health and a regular patient. They have blood testing in the office which is very convenient. It is very rare to find this type of care anywhere.

I found Dr. Barrett when looking for a licensed naturapath that had a specialty in women’s health and she’s been everything I hoped for. She’s on-​time with appointments, communicative via email, very patient, has a supportive and educational approach and most importantly I’ve seen results in the form of improved hormone levels and shrinking cysts from her supplement therapies. Thanks to Dr. Barrett I’ve been able to avoid harsh medicines or surgeries. AND!!! She will continue to work with me by phone when I have to make a move cross-​country!

Dr. Barrett is a rare breed of doctor in the best way possible!
I have been seeing her for 5 years now for a variety of things and her treatment plans are more thorough and effective than any other doctor I’ve seen (and I’ve seen some «high profile» doctors in their field of expertise). She is extremely personable, down to earth, knowledgable without the arrogance of some physicians and helps you devise plans that accomodate your particular budget and lifestyle (ie; she never pushes things that are only sold through her clinic and always provides several options). In short, she’s truly a doctor who is a partner in your health plan.
Dr. Barrett is a LICENSED Naturopathic Doctor — I emphasize the licensed part because it is crucial that, if you go to an ND, that they are licensed just like an MD as there are currently no requirements that an ND be licensed in a given state, rather it is optional and proves their education, residency background, etc. Because she is licensed, she is able to write prescription drug orders just like an MD or DO.
She’s so awesome that she even does phone follow up visits if I prefer as I can’t always make the trip out to behind the orange curtain (her other office is in Costa Mesa). She doesn’t nickle and dime you either and she will write resonable prescriptions for you without having to go for a visit.
As for her staff, they have always been curteous and helpful.

Koren Barrett follows the DAN! protocol and we are working with her to treat our autistic son. She is intelligent, thorough, and friendly, and I don’t feel as though she is taking advantage of me, as I have with another DAN! doctor. I have only met with her once so far, but I’m looking forward to working with her to help our son!
