Specializing in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi and No-​Gi self defense and competition training for men, women and kids. Parents with children experiencing bully or academic problems will find Jiu Jitsu instills confidence. Kid classes 4 – 7 years old 4pm-4:45pm Monday-​Friday: 8 – 15 years old 5pm-6:15pm Monday-​Friday: Saturday 9am-​10am kids all ages. Adult classes Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 830am-​11am: Monday-​Friday 630pm-​9pm: Saturday 1030am-​1pm: Sunday 3pm-​5pm. Many of the adult students with advanced Jiu Jitsu belt rankings are also very experienced in striking and wrestling.

Business Owner

Professor James Boran is a 3rd degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu plus holding Black Belts in Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido. Born and raised in New York, New York. B. A. Columbia University lettering in football and signed as a free-​agent linebacker by the New York Jets in 1978. 5 time Black Belt Senior Pan American Champion and 1 time No-​Gi Black Belt Senior World Champion. Numerous other Gold Medals from other BJJ Competitions as well as Silver and Bronze Medals from Pan American and World BJJ competitions.

I have been doing bjj since 1995 and have known james boran for a long time and I’m a 3rd degree black belt under Mr Boran. If you looking for quality, personal, family friendly environment look no further. From the beginner adults to advanced the instruction is superb at any given time there will be at least 2 black belts on the mats to guide you in your bjj journey under the tutelage of Mr Boran. So in short if you are in the area and want to visit no problem if your looking for high standards instruction this is a one stop shop.

My 6yr old has been going to Boran Jiu Jitsu for approximately 6 months and absolutely loves it. He cant get enough and I cant believe the progress he has made in such as short amount of time. Even for a 6 yr old he is much more disciplined/​confident in himself, stronger, slimmer and physically and mentally fit than he was last year. The girls in the class all appear confident and strong no matter their age. Mr Boran is the most fun, patient and dedicated coach I’ve met, the kids listen to him and try their hardest to perform their best for him, he cares about all his kids and teaches them to become confident and strong individuals with his words, actions and teachings. We love Team Avalanche, everyone here from the other JJ kids, the other coaches, and parents are so welcoming and dedicated to this craft, I hope to continue going here for many years to come. Kids classes are offered every evening and Saturday mornings, with kids as young as diapers coming in and learning! There’s no fixed schedule or appointments, you can show up to any class to participate and the monthly pricing is very reasonable! We love the BJJ family!

What a great school. I’ve trained at a few schools and its really only as good as the coach. James is a great jujitsu coach and makes learning this tough lifestyle fun. He was a gracious host. I unfortunately was sent to nyc for work and didnt commit to the acadamy but if im ever in that area i will definitely be back. Thanks for the hospitality guys!

Boran Brazilian Ju Jitsu is one of my BJJ competition secret weapons! Although I primarily train at another club in Norco, CA, James Boran’s is on my travel training list when I gear up for competition Gi Jiu Jitsu.
Boran has an excellent array of higher level belts at every work out and he himself is a Fourth Degree Brazilian Jiu-​Jitsu Black Belt that’s certified by the IBJJF (International Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation) and the USBJJF (United States Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Federation).
At the particular competition sport BJJ work out I was at, there was 1 Black Belt, 2 Brown Belts and 6 high stripe Purple Belts. Plenty of experience to make my drive worth while! In particular, one of his multiple time Pan American and Master’s World Champion, Brown Belts really helped point out some holes in my game.
Also, I’m a Master’s competitor and had ZERO problems with the younger guys trying to «beat on» the new guy /​visitor!
Also available are Competiton No-​Gi, MMA, No Gi for kids and Kids Sport Jiu Jitsu.
This is my favorite club to tune up my BJJ in Costa Mesa!

Our boys have been going here for months. I would say the main selling feature of this particular studio is James himself. Many martial arts studios have instructors which tend to talk down to the students in order to get them to perform. James is very positive to both parties during a sparing match. He speaks calmly to one to remind them of a move to trap his opponent and then will talk to the other kid and explain a way to get out of his position and gain control. Also very reasonably priced considering my boys could go to classes 6 days a week if I wanted them too. And the classes are and hour and a half so I can get some errands done without the rush of a 45 — 60 minute class. I highly recommend Boran for kids Jiu Jitsu. Haven’t witnessed him with the adult classes but amazing with the kids.

If you have young kids i cant recommend Mr. Boran and his team enough. They are ALL so well trained and great with kids. First thing my kids learned was «how to fend off someone trying to abduct them»… 2nd, what to do when someone bullies them…3rd, to respect your partner who is helping you to learn technique (This ties into not becoming a bully). They have a great time, plus it’s also a whole hour of exercise… In addition to all the above great reasons to try this class, the biggest one is that as a parent I want my children to grow up and feel confident in the world, like they can physically take care of themselves. Helping my kids establish self defense skills, routine, regular exercise and self control are just a few reasons I pat myself on the back as a parent.

I’ve been training with James at Boran Jiu-​Jitsu for 8 years now. I’ve been here for that long because I know I am getting the best possible instruction and training that I could get in Orange County. James’ instruction is as good as it gets. He’s a multiple time Gold Medalist at the Pan American’s and many other high level tournaments. Not only do you get James as an instructor, but there are at least a dozen other black belts that train here on a regular basis and all of them provide exceptional instruction. There is also an excellent kids program at the school. Kids start as early as 4 years old. An average adult class is anywhere from 8 to 14 students. Usually there is a good warm-​up of stretching and drills for 30 to 45 minutes, followed by about 40minutes of technique performed with a partner, then grappling. The school is extremely clean and well kept. I will probably train here for as long as James has the school. If you’re looking for a jiu-​jitsu school just to learn some self-​defence or to stay in shape or if you want to compete Boran Jiu-​Jitsu is the best!

In the past I’ve attended both beginning classes, women’s self defense classes, as well as having my children in the children’s classes. The knowledge and background training that James Boran has is impressive. He is a top notch instructor and his passion for jiu-​jitsu is very addicting.

If you’re looking for an academy that teaches Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in it’s finest form, that is, pure and unsoiled by sloppy mixed martial arts oriented variations and free of strength dominated power moves, this is the academy for you. It is run by James Boran, an ex-​linebacker for the New York Jets and Black belt in Hapkido, Tae Kwon Do, and of course, Third Degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The classes are small but diverse, and usually include numerous high belts and various sized training partners for maximum mastery of each technique. The vibes are very chill and friendly. There are no egotistical meatheads or hotshots, but conversely there are no wimps. All age groups train here, from 5 year old kids to 70+ year old men. The academy’s hygiene can be compared to that of a hospital. The mats, walls, floors, restroom, fans, windows, and changing room are all anti-​bacterialized every night, and the students all maintain excellent standards of hygiene. No ringworm, empetigo, or other skin-​related issues are present, unlike many grappling academies that are rampant with skin fungi. All of these factors come together to form an excellent training environment.
