Ghai’s Tree Services & Landscaping

We wish we could give «zero stars» and a «sad face». We should have listened to Annemarie’s review here on Unilocal,and never hired them… please read on to see for yourselves how things evolved with this company.
We requested a bid for tree services including tree trimming, banana tree and bushes removal, and tree planting.
Got the bid, agreed on price and dates of service (Friday, Saturday and Monday ⁰¹⁄₀₈ through 01/​10/​2016).
Although both of us had taken the day off from work on Friday ⁰¹⁄₀₈ just for this activity, and asked the Ghai company to let us know when they were going to be in the front trimming the tree, and they agreed to it, it didn’t happen. By the time we arrived from the back yard, they had trimmed… the wrong tree!!!
We have 2 trees at the front, the understanding was to trim the one that was going over our neighbors’ fence, just to be a nice neighbor, however they trimmed the wrong tree (the one that is entirely on our property and hence clearly did not need any trimming)!!! Our poor beautiful mature tree, the pride of our front yard, got absolutely «butchered», with lots of branches cut out in a sad and sickly looking way.
The banana tree by the house got removed, but the roots were left in the ground (???), and the roots were actually the main reason for taking it out, so that the invasive roots don’t damage our foundation. So now we need to bring another company to remove the roots! In addition the irrigation was supposed to be put back in place but it wasn’t!
When the crew arrived on Friday 01/​08, in spite of the contract clearly stating the days of service, and the weather being sunny with NO RAIN, they abruptly notified us that the day of service on ⁰¹⁄₀₉ (the next day i.e. Saturday) just got canceled! We wanted to know why, because the written understanding was that the dates of service were going to be ⁰¹⁄₀₈ through 01/​10, and the weather was fine with no rain. One person said it was because they had a family emergency, and had to go somewhere, and another (Josue) said «we don’t work in the mud» without even having checked our backyard to see how the ground looked like (?!)
Later that day we called Josue at the company to ask how did they make the decision to abruptly cancel service the next day without even testing the ground to see if it was fit for planting??? We asked how did he determine that the dirt was «muddy» without even testing it?
There were indeed two areas at the back of the yard (where a pipe got broken) that still had muddy terrain, however this was not the case for the rest of the yard where the ground was just fine. And 90% of the project was going to take place in areas where the ground was fine and not «muddy».
Completely baffled, we dug ourselves (!!) in the yard to test the ground, and we were able to prove there was NO mud; so now with this proof we asked again: now that the «mud» excuse didn’t work anymore, why were they still canceling work for Saturday?
Seeing this, they still canceled Saturday, but now they rescheduled us for Sunday. We still don’t know the true reason for the cancellation, but based on the two conflicting stories we got from two different staff members, we assume something else probably came up for Saturday, a «bigger fish to fry», and they felt entitled to throw us and our job like a «hot potato».
Around noon the next day (Saturday), we were out running errands (because the job in the yard had been canceled for this day), when we got a call from Josue regarding a «contract question»: an irrigation matter that had been clearly covered in contract, but they now wanted to change the scope (?!?) The matter was only $ 100 (in a $ 4,500 contract). We responded politely that when we get home we would look at the contract and let them know the answer, and we followed up with a respectful and polite email stating we were out and didn’t have the contract with us, so we would check on this matter later and let them know before their arrival the next day.
A couple hours later however, we got an email note from Josue completely out of the blue, telling us that «the contract is cancelled between us», and adding statements such as «you would not be happy with our work anyway». Where did this come from, when they hadn’t even started planting the trees, and what prompted this, considering that a couple hours earlier they were still communicating with us about our contract?
We responded by another polite email, stating that we have treated them politely and respectfully all along, and that we could not understand how a simple question regarding a $ 100 line item in the contract, that we had not even answered yet, could trigger a contract cancellation?!?
Now after JOB ABANDONMENT by the crew, and unjustified personal attacks from Josue, we are left wondering what have we done to trigger all this?!
If reading this you are as baffled as we are, you know what to do: to protect yourself and your property, do not use this company.

Ghai’s removed 15 eucalyptus trees from our condominium property in east Costa Mesa. We couldnt have been happier with their service.
As a homeowner-​run HOA, we are pretty judicious about our spend. We had received quotes form 4 different tree removal companies and found Ghai’s to be the most reasonably priced. We also took comfort in that they were insured for property damages.
From the minute we called for an estimate, to the onsite evaluation to the tree removal process, they were extremely responsive, on-​time, considerate, and efficient.
They cut down and grinded the roots of all 15 trees within 3 days. They were considerate of the neighbors and time they conducted the service.
Also, they did a fantastic job on clean up. We would have never known they were there if it wasnt for the missing trees.
We recommend Ghai and will continue to call upon their services for our abor needs.

Josue and Crew are one if the most professional tree removals I have ever contracted! They are extremely knowledge and efficient in what they do. They pricing is also exceptionally fair. They are very friendly as well. Highly Recommended.

I needed some trees trimmed and another tree removed and Jose returned my call and came over and gave me a quote same day. He then emailed me the quote by end of day so I could have it in writing, and called the next day to make sure I received it. After trying to get another quote from a different business and no success (the quote I got was very reasonable, I just wanted to make sure), I called Jose back and he had my tree services done same week. They did a great job, were very friendly, and took all the debris away + more. Very quick, reliable, and friendly. Would definitely recommend Ghai’s Tree Service to anyone in the area needing large tree services done.

Terrific in trimming my canary island palm trees. Price was very reasonable and job was done quickly.

I was shocked to see someone gave them five stars. They came to give us an estimate on trimming our neighbor’s tree that hangs into our yard. They came, looked at our yard, the access to the tree, etc and quoted us $ 100, which seemed reasonable. As he was walking out the door, he changed his mind and increased it to $ 125. Still reasonable so we scheduled a time for them to come. He came by on the scheduled day and just left an invoice in our mailbox for $ 125 and a note saying they would be by over the weekend. They showed up on Saturday morning and told us that the price would now be $ 200 or more. No explanation when I asked why. I understand an estimate is just that… an estimate but they were way off and overpriced for such a simple job. Not impressed with their customer service either.

Very professional, friendly, family run business. They did an AMAZING job on our trees. Didn’t hack them to death or rush through it like other tree services in the past.
