Specialties

We carry costumes for sale and for rent + we have a huge selection of gag gifts and magic. We sell theatrical make-​up and face paint and some of the brand names include: Mehron, Ben Nye, Krylon, Snazaroo, Wolfe Brothers and can place special orders for your make-​up needs.

We sell hats, wigs, masks, capes, and many theatrical accessories.

Halloween is crazy busy so shop early to avoid the last minute crunch.

We personally know most of the entertainers in the O.C. and can book out talent for you parties and corporate events.

History

Established in 1991.

At one time there where 5 locations of House of Humor in the OC. Westminster, Anaheim, Tustin, Orange and Costa Mesa. Inger Stevenson and her Mom, Carolina started them all. Sherry worked for Inger and bought the Costa Mesa store in 1995. Inger’s motto was «Anything for a laugh» and we still strive to keep that motto going strong!

She has expanded the business to include, Magic, Costume Rental, Professional Make-​up and Face Paint and does an Entertainment Booking Service. She’ll help you find what you need in a flash!

In response to the comment on my previous review, I find it a bit rude that I’m not being addressed directly, as it’s me who had a problem and not a potential future customer.
With that, the excuses to the majorly inflated price are based on the assumption that the products are purchased at retail pricing, which seems ridiculous, because as a small business owner, you’re entitled to reduced pricing or wholesale pricing. I don’t walk into sephora, ulta, Macy’s or any other cosmetic store expecting different prices than what the brand sells online. I don’t walk into a target or Safeway Starbucks and see higher prices than a corporate Starbucks, even though they have to purchase their license. I call bs

For Orange County this is a great place to get unique costume and make up products. It’s nice that this store is here as otherwise in oc everything is your standard run of the mill selection. Options are limited in OC but this store has it. We had a great time with the owner and really appreciated all of her expertise!

I arrived yesterday evening albeit late and already knowing I was pushing my luck — however with glee I saw lights on inside and the OPEN sign on — I tried the door and yay it was open.
Imagine my shock to be screamed at from the store room «WE ARE CLOSED» — I couldn’t quite believe that I, a customer, had been spoken to like that so I asked the lady to repeat herself. «I SAID WE ARE CLOSED.»
I answered «I understand that you are closed but it is highly offensive to be screamed at from the other side of the store,» that I was a customer and that all signs (literally) pointed to the fact that the store was open… she then proceeded to race towards me and I thought for a minute she was going to physically lash out…“Do you know that for the last three nights people have walked in at 5.25pm expecting to be served…“
I did try to remind her that I was innocent here but she was clearly in a very bad mood and didn’t want to hear me out.
I have been coming to this place for years — have constantly put up with the owner and her eccentricities… this lady was NOT the owner but did the owner a GREAT disservice — I will NEVER go back. Not even my Mom speaks to me like that!

Ladies, they carry all your ben nye products here! Roughly 16 bucks for one jar of 1.5 oz banana powder. It goes for 15 online BEFORE shipping. What else can I say. =)

It is an oldy, but a goody. It’s kind of like a maze. They boxes are stocked high. I bet there are things in those boxes that they don’t even know they have. They had some fun items, if you are looking for a gag gift. They have some of everything. They have been around for years.

Your response to my previous review was hilarious, to say the least. To say that the owner was yelling to be heard over the wall to wall customers is a joke, as there were maybe two or three other customers in the store at the time, and every time I have been there there has never been more than five customers in the store at a time.
We continue to use the Mama Clown glitters you refused to sell. Plain and simple, we as customers, and frankly as business owners, expect to be treated with respect and to have a pleasant and efficient shopping experience. We do not patronize a business in order to be badgered, and a purchase of one or two items should not take upwards of 20 minutes when I’m the only one being rung up.
I have received numerous messages through Unilocal from others that have visited your shop to tell me they had the exact same experiences I did.

Tired of those pop-​up Halloween stores? Well, here’s a place where it’s Halloween all year round. This place takes it seriously, too, and has been doing so for decades.
Do you need a real Halloween costume? You can buy and rent costumes, masks, and other accessories (e.g., Frankenstein monster boots). They sell professional quality makeup, too.
How about Halloween props? They actually have a Frankenstein lab for rent! They also have coffins and other spooky haunted house items (and they deliver).
What about when it’s not Halloween? They sell novelty and gag gifts, magic supplies, and all kinds of other products not easily classified. What little they don’t have they can special order. Sherry, the owner, is extremely knowledgeable about her wares.
They also seem to work as a talent agency and they have celebrity impersonators, clowns, magicians, etc. for hire.
House of Humor is like Costa Mesa’s piece of Hollywood. It’s a one-​of-​a-​kind shop that you definitely have to check out at least once. Support independent businesses!

Sherry is awesome! I came in looking for a specific Ben Nye makeup kit for makeup class I’m taking and although she didn’t have it in stock, she special ordered it for me and it was here in less than two days. House of Humor has a variety of Ben Nye products in stock, including the infamous Banana powder which I also picked up. I couldn’t help myself, lol! There’s also tons of other brands and special effects stuff. Will definitely be going back!

I came in about 10 minutes before close to pick out some masks for my nephew’s play. The owner was extremely helpful and informative. She was giving us a lot of suggestions and making conversation with us. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 was because the mask selection was a bit low.

came in here out of curiosity. there were gazillion costumes and fun things! the lady who worked there was super friendly and offered my daughter a flower balloon that she made. i bought a funny tiny happy birthday hat. wish we were closer so we can come back more often. but we’ll be back one day for sure!

I gave a 5 stars to this place because this place has been here many many years,
owner is very friendly and she knows about this business a lot.
I went there to get some props for my PHOTO BOOTH RENTAL BUSINESS.
I saw this place when I was driving by and i thought I should go and check it out.
I am glad I did. There was some mask I have never seen before:).
We spoke about 1 hour with her about many things about props. She showed me how to make custom props etc.
I will go back there and support this local business.

I came to this place a month or two before Halloween because I had a costume party to go to and I wanted to do something new and interesting. I needed a particular product to make scars, a product which was super hard to find. After some extensive research I was able to find that it was carried at House of Humor. I called to make sure they had it and the owner assured me she did. The place was small but with lots of good makeup products and other random costume things. I would highly recommend House of Humor for the hard to find costume items.

This place was great!
I’ve been searching for a very specific wig for weeks now. I’m hoping to get my Halloween shopping done before it becomes far too bothersome to even consider the task. Until today, I’ve had zero luck. The lady who owns the place, knows it in and out. Take the time to ask her for help. If I were to just look around, myself there’s no way I would have come across the perfect wig that I did.
The actual shop itself is crammed with merchandise, but it’s very likely you’ll find what you’re looking for as long as your purchase isn’t too incredibly obscure.
As other reviewers have stated, the owner is a character. She absolutely is! She owns a costume store for (insert deity of choice here)‘s sake. She’s very helpful and knowledgeable. I am a wig novice and she helped me with the In’s and Out’s of a wig cap, how to put the wig on, and general styling tips.
I do worry that the closer it gets to Halloween, the space itself could become wildly crowded … maybe that’s your thing though. ;)
I will DEFINITELY be going back here for all my costume needs.

This place gets a ZERO for service– the owners are an old couple and the lady is downright RUDE. You would think in this economy, any business, let alone a mom and pop costume shop, would graciously welcome its customers and serve them with a smile. The only saving grace for me there and the reason I bought anything was an extremely nice girl that works there named Megan, but she’s apparently only seasonal.
As for the merchandise, the wigs are good — I bought a really cute brunette bob for $ 27 and ppl seriously think its my actual hair so very good quality. They carry pretty much any costume you can think of for rent and some for purchase. Their accessories are little outrageously priced– $ 5 for a feather (yes, one feather) but regardless, a good spot to pick up what you need if you want to be able to try it on first.

Need to color your beard green for St. Patrick’s Day? Need a cap with plastic doggie poop on the bill? No and no? Well for any other costume party needs, or gag gifts, this is your place. It’s a cool local ma & pa kinda joint literally stacked to the ceiling with all that and more, much more. The lady owner is very funny and even offered to dye my goat a normal color for free once I washed the green outa my gray. «I’m a hairdresser too» she announced proudly. Hmm, may have to take her up on that.
Yep, stay out of the mall shops, Wal Marts etc. and patronize a true neighborhood shop. Do it for a better America damn it!
