The Cheese Shop at The Mix

What a great find. This was my first experience at a speciality cheese shop. the cheesemonger was helpful and knowledgable. After trying a few, we ended up purchasing the truffle noire to go and a 3 cheese plate to enjoy there. The plate came with a nice assortment of cheese and accompanied with jam, honey, and crostini. The Gouda he selected for us received the majority vote as everyone’s favorite.

Alexis is definitely a cheese whisperer.
She set me up with a wonderful cheese board and I can definitely say I love everything she place on there.
It was worth the wait and man does she have the patience of an angel since the three ladies before me took absolutely forever but I get it. Cheese is life. Lol
I can’t wait to go back to the OC again and visit her again.

Far less satisfied than in the past. The guy behind the counter had no interest in serving me, nor any of flood of customers who came in right after me. Instead he went and answered the phone and spent fifteen minutes chatting away on it (I timed it) before I gave up and walked away… Absolutely unacceptable.

Heard about this place from my cousin. She comes here for their blue cheese and claims that this place has the best blue cheese ever. Every time we have wine nightt, she would stop by the cheese shop and pick up some cheese. It’s always so tasty. I came here to pick up some cheese to make my own charcuterie plate at home with some wine. The employee was very nice and helpful. He offered me samples of different types of cheese and I ended up getting Brie cheese and Gouda. I love their Gouda. It’s the best Gouda I’ve ever had. This is my go to place for cheese whenever I have wine night! The little shop is so cute and also all the shops around the cheese shop is cute too!

I came here on a Sunday walked in with no expectations and saw that you can get a To Go 5 picks for $ 20. I am a big fan of cheeses and meats, so why not give it a try, and boy I was blown away! This beautiful meats and cheese store is beautifully decorated, great rustic feel, like a warm hug with all the woody warm colors.
When I ordered, they kindly asked if I didn’t like anything or like anything. I didn’t have a have particular dislike to anything and gave them the green light to «BRING IT ON» I wanted to see them get creative and show me what they think was the best! And I LOVE IT.
It came out in a white box and the man who created my 5 picks explained to me what they were. The meats were imported and the marmalade, jams and some other stuff were made in house except for the mustard with Szechuan peppers.
That one cheese with caramel sauce was my favorite. I live in LA and was eating this while my friend was driving back on the 405. And we can’t stop exclaiming how delicious everything was. They also provide you with utensils and some cut up baguette. It was perfection and the best $ 20 u will spend. We inhaled it in 5 mins. I never looked back, I have to get a 5 pick every single time I am at the Mix. U never know what you’ll get! :) always something new

I have been so moved by a charcuterie plate (and one cheese pairing in particular) that I feel compelled to write a Unilocal review about it. Noord Hollander Gouda with Lavender Caramel, beautiful symphony of salty and sweet — my life is changed. It was downright magical, like a unicorn giving birth in your mouth. Don’t let that image upset you, instead embrace the miraculous wonder of it all, and go try it at the Cheese Shop at OC Mix. You will not be disappointed.
Side note — nice service, knowledgeable staff, prices are average/​on the high end ($ 15 for 3 item charcuterie plate, $ 21 for 5 items, $ 27 for 7 items)

What is better than some good cut and amazing spread? This place has an awesome deal for a mixture of cheese and meats and everything in between. Their cheese monger got me hooked with my first 7 varietals– he was after my heart! I think this is my 5^th time here!!! Cannot say enough!!! Soppresata, Coco Coco Coconut, Coltswald… droolicious!!!

A week after I had my salami sandwich at The Cheese Stop, I still can’t stop bugging my best friend about taking me back.
I eat pretty damn fast. But the moment I took a bite into my sandwich, I was enjoying every single bite. A relatively simple sandwich gave so much flavor that I found myself unconsciously slowly eating it. My best friend also says that their family orders their charcuterie plates here. Already looking forward to my next visit — this time, not to just grab a sandwich but to take some cheese and meats home too!

I had my eyes on the cheese shop ever since I stumbled onto the OC Mix. The store is a humbling size shop that delivers on everything cheesy. They have all sorts of cheese and jams. I went inside and couldn’t help but pick up jam/​jelly/​peanut butter spreader or whatever they are called. Total was 7 bucks for this small little thing but it was just something I felt I needed to buy (don’t know why).
I really wanted to buy the chocolate bars that they have their since they said it was made with authentic cow milk lol! I also saw cheese paper? Not sure what that is but I am definitely very intrigued.
The service is pretty nice here. It has that mom and pop shop vibe to it. The owners are just super friendly. I just didn’t stay that long since the store was super small and I had seen all I needed to see in about 5 minutes. If I’m ever in need of some cheese or jam then this is definitely the stop for it.
PS they also sell salami and baguettes.

The cheese here was awesome, the customer service was not so awesome. I love cheese, so naturally when I saw there was a cheese shop I had to stop in and taste. The first time I walked in, the guy behind the counter didn’t say one word to me, not a «hi can I help you» or a «let me know if you’d like to sample anything». It seems as though he didn’t want to be bothered. I decided to walk around The Mix for a bit and come back to hopefully get another person to help me out.
Upon my return there was a girl behind the counter with the same guy, again no greeting or eye contact. I knew what I wanted after studying the menu from the first time I was in the shop. Finally, the girl makes eye contact (not willingly) and asks what we’d like. I tell her the kinds of cheeses that I like and they end up picking them for us. I got a blue cheese, a brie, and manchego on my cheese plate. The plate was about $ 15, and the girl said it would take 15 minutes for her to put it together.
We sat down and about 10 – 15 minutes later she came over and handed us our plate with yummy cheese. She explained what was on the plate, she seemed a bit happier but the whole attitude thing at first was a real put-​off.
All in all, I would recommend getting some cheese from here just don’t expect good customer service.

Some people love sweets, I love cheese.
The cheese shop is awesome. They have a great variety of cheeses and they are very knowledgable about everything they sell.
When I made my first purchase here I received a booklet called «33 pieces of cheese.» Its basically a little diary where you (or the salesperson) can enter the information about the cheese you are trying or buying. It has a section for flavor, texture, milk, names, origin, and your person rating. I thought this was a neat idea. There are so many cheeses, its nice to remember what you have tried and what you liked/​did not like.
They also sell cheese plates that you can order and eat on site.
Aside from cheese they also sell a variety of things that go with cheese such as jams, honey, crackers, cheese boards, knifes etc.
Everything is fairly priced, and the shop always seems to have most things in stock.
Lastly, a must try is the espresso chocolate chip cookies with sea salt. You will die and go to heaven. Also look out for cheeses labeled «Need a home.» These ones are usually 50% off or more.

After a less than stellar experience here in December, the manager (Alexis) invited me back for a free cheese plate and assured me that the customer service and employee attitude is now a problem of the past.
When I arrived, I observed the Cheese Shop briefly and noticed one huge difference. The employees here were actually smiling this time and actually interacted with the customer. After speaking with Alexis, she began what turned out to be a 30 – 45 min cheese sampling. Alexis is incredibly knowledgeable about the background, history and science behind the cheese. She carefully described each of the cheese she had me sample and really gave me a crash course on the cheese in stock.
After the sampling, Alexis meticulously put together a beautiful cheese box. She asked us what types of cheese we wanted, recommended other cheese based on the taste we preferred, allowed us to sample different cheese before committing to the few we liked, and explained how the various jams, honey and nuts would complement the cheese. As someone who knows little about cheese but enjoys cheese as a whole, this is exactly the type of buying experience any Cheese Shop should have. I learned enough that I was even able to describe (at a very basic level) the cheese I had on the plate to my friends when we devoured the box.
Even if this cheese sampling session was pre-​arranged, this type of customer service is definitely at least a few steps in the right direction!

I came in for a quick bite while at the OC Mart Mix and I’m so glad that I did. I wasn’t starving, but I wanted something to hold me over until dinner later that evening. At first, I didn’t even realize that they served sandwiches until I spotted someone munching on one at a table out front.
They have a limited amount of grab and go sandwiches available that you can enjoy hot or cold. My choice was the salami. The ingredients were fancy, so I’m gonna copy the description straight from the menu:
Brigante (mellow, semi firm sheep’s milk), Molinari fennel salami, roasted tomatoes, arugula, and whole grain mustard. It was delicious! It tasted like a pepperoni pizza without the marinara. The meat was a little spicy, but not too much to take away from the great melty cheese holding it in between the bread.
I washed it down with a Pellegrino and spent less than $ 10 total for everything. Totally worth it.
I saw people ordering charcuterie plates that looked amazing. I’ll have to come back with more time and a bigger appetite, but I’ll be back soon for sure!

Its not so cheesy coming to this place if you are looking for some good cheese. The actual cheese selection is small. It was not comparable to the cheese section of Wholefoods or Gelsons. The staff is not so knowledgable about the product they are selling. They also made us feel our business transaction was bothersome. I am not so sure why this business establishment is highly rated at all.

Ohhh miss Neals Dairy Farm so badly!!!

Wow, okay. I came here with one other person a few days ago to purchase cheese/​meats and was SO horribly disappointed by the customer service. Since we went on a weekday afternoon, the entire area was pretty void of foot traffic, which (I mistakenly thought) would be nice so we could take our time to browse our options.
Nope.
I was so excited to visit this place upon reading other reviews (and hearing from other people) about the really friendly customer service, samples, recommendations, etc. and I got NONE of that. The lady who was helping us was so curt and borderline rude. No smiles. I asked her a couple questions and all her answers were given with attitude. Totally sounded like she didn’t want to be there or help me at all. I started feeling BAD for asking questions and rushed my decisions. I asked her for a recommendation after choosing two cheeses, and she responded with «what do you mean?» … Uhh could I not be any clearer?
There was another couple who was checking out the store, and she basically made them wait until she finished helping us, which made me feel even more rushed. Every minute or so she just kept repeating, «Anything else?» I understand why you would want to help one customer at a time if you were ACTUALLY spending the time and effort to help me out, but you weren’t! So I don’t get why you can’t stagger helping customers, so I have sufficient time to look while you help the other customers. Jeez.
I’ve been to other cheese places, both in California and out, that have been amazing. Quality service and amazing customer service, with the staff going above and beyond to help you out. I see in other reviews that other Unilocalers had great experiences here, but mine unfortunately was bad. Do not recommend. Or only go when she’s not working. Or get some better freaking customer service. Disappointing.

How does this place have such amazing reviews? I came all the way from Diamond Bar to Costa Mesa because of all these raving reviews only to be disappointed.
This review is about their service or actually the lack of service. I came here to grab a cheese plate for a party. The Asian male worker had a really mean and impatient face and terrible attitude the entire time I was served. He looked and acted like I owed him a million dollars. I was asking him about the different types of cheese plates they offered and the specific type of cheese they put in each. First of all, he was like you do not get to choose the cheese. Fine, I will trust you to do it. Then, I asked so generally what type of cheeses do you put in. He was like basically whatever we have in the back. UH? How does that even answer my question?
I definitely will not be returning.

If only The Cheese Shop made sandwiches to-​order. I mean, they do if they run out of the ones in the case. But considering they’re going for a gourmet angle, it seems almost cheap for them to use the pre-​made display ones to fulfill an order. I don’t want the sandwich with the wilted arugula that’s been sitting inside the display case. What is this, a Ralph’s?
That being said, the sandwich was quite good. You can taste the quality in the sliced meats, and the fact that they’re pressed sandwiches makes them even better. But really, it’s nothing that I haven’t already experienced elsewhere in other sandwich shops and panini stops. And at those other places, I get everything made to-​order.
And for all of you eyeing dessert, just know that the chocolate chip cookie here is an abomination. It may look delicious, but it was one of the worst cookies I’ve ever had. One step above Chips Ahoy. Completely hard and crunchy on the outside, dry on the inside, and cold all around (who eats cold chocolate chip cookies?). No amount of sea salt could save that piece of overpriced cardboard.

SO GOOD! I love cheese so much and was really happy that I was introduced to this nice little shop through Costa Mesa Restaurant Week. Although not technically a restaurant, I was more than eager to try out some good cheese.
The restaurant week offering was 3oz of fromager d’affinois, 4oz raw wildflower honey, and a demi baguette. I was a little apprehensive at first that the cheese of choice was the fromager d’affinois because, although I love soft cheeses, I don’t particularly like brie all that much (and fromager d’affinois is very similar in production to brie). But I love trying different cheeses, so I decided to try this one as well. It was so good. Even without drizzling the honey on top of the cheese and bread, it was delicious. While it had a similarity to brie, I found that it packed more cheesy flavor (probably because of how it is produced). But with the honey? Phenomenal! This particular wildflower honey has such a unique flavor (it kind of reminds me of a honey version of a REALLY good crème brûlée).
I also got a bottle of blackberry and walnut jam. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’m excited to!
Go-​to cheese shop? Yes!

This is a cool little cheese and epicurian shop within the OC Mix Mart. I love their cheese selection and their baguettes from OC Baking Company. And it is rare that I get away without a landjaeger sausage.
They have a great staff who listen to what the customers are looking for. They also have some awesome gadgets and miscellany from honey to jam to sauces to cookies to candies to…
Highly recommend an exploration.
