Specialties

HOMEMADE! All of our desserts, muffins, donuts, biscuits and sausage gravy are homemade. We also make daily homemade specials which consists of meatloaf, chicken and biscuit, mac and cheese and many more. For our sandwiches we use fresh hamburg, chicken and pork.

History

Established in 1978.

The year of the diner was made in the mid 50’s, and it was brought to Coventry Vermont in 1978 from Massachusetts. It has remained open for business 7 days a week.

I have been a part of the diner since 1985 which is when my parents had purchased it. I learned many tasks from working with my mom, and when I graduated high school I started working full time. In 2002 I purchased the diner from my parents and now I have my daughter working with me. She now has learned many things about the diner business, and she cooks and is a waitress. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to keep the diner in the family and also to have the 3rd generation having an interest and some day taking it over. Marthas Diner is a big part of my life, the customers are like family to me and also the diner was named after my mom which has a special meaning to me. I lost my mom to cancer in 2006 so to have my daughter working with me and taking so much pride, I know my mom would be very grateful.

I drive by here a couple times a month on the way to a work site. I stop here because it is the last chance for food and a bathroom, not because the food is outstanding. It is, however, inexpensive, and breakfast portions are very generous. That’s what the fourth star is for. My one complaint is that I usually sit at the counter where I can see my breakfast sit and sit and sit after being cooked. Is this place unionized? It seems like only one employee is authorized to deliver food, and if she gets tied up elsewhere your meal will arrive cold. When I waited tables at a Friendly’s many years ago we helped each other out if someone got tied up. Here I watch other staff wander by my meal a dozen times without even seeing it.
Update: May 2015
For the record, two eggs, a huge slab of ham, and toast cost me $ 4.50. Coffee is extra. If you want to pay more you can add homemade toast or potatoes. This place is at the north end of Coventry village, where US 5 and NH 14 branch heading north. This visit the cook handed me my breakfast instead of setting it out to cool;-)

Great spot, I like the authentic metal diner car feel. On the way to Jay at early hours of the morning there are few and far between spots but this was a great stop! I definitely would suggest it would return too on mountain trips.

Monday morning ritual. Great/​no bullshit service, fast, affordable and colorful locals. And they don’t bitch when u ask for egg whites. Good stuff.

Leaving Jay Peak, food options are few and far between. This place was a good find because it was cheap, quick, and had decent food. The food was nothing to write how about, slightly below average diner fare — but the place was clean and the staff was friendly. This may become a regular road stop when leaving the mountain hungry (and don’t want to pay base lodge prices).

The most interesting thing to me about Martha’s is its history. This is a classic stainless steel diner made by Jerry O’Mahoney Co, in the heydey of the diner era. It is said there are very few of these left, and this is the one found the farthest north of its NJ factory. The staff believes this one came to them from Boston, and Martha, now deceased, made it a household name in Coventry/​Irasburg. The day I was there for lunch the food was plain but adequate, the service prompt. It appears to have a local following, and I would recommend it for families. The counter is so worn from the decades of use, that its original design is nearly gone. Charming to think of how many cups of coffee that counter has seen. I hope this diner will be preserved and serve many others.
