I took Capt. Bobby Gibson up on a full day of Permit and Bone Fishing in gorgeous Key Biscayne. I couldn’t have been happier with the outcome. I had one shots at two Bone Fish and 8 – 9 shots at Permit. I also had a shot at a Tarpon, which surfaced just a we were pulling into one of the flats. Permit were the primary targets; it wasn’t exactly peak Permit season, so I consider this a great outcome.
Bobby was relentless in his pursuit of the fish. We bounced around to many different flats throughout the day, many more than I would have expected. We of course spent more time in the active areas. When fishing for Permit your really need a captain who understands where the fish hang, what to look for in the water, and how the fish reacts to bait. It’s truly a cat n’ mouse waiting game of sorts.
We never waited too long in one section. Bobby did a great job of balancing patience with movement from spot to spot. Bobby has great eyes and provides excellent direction precast and post cast. I am pleased to say that I landed my first Permit fishing with Bobby, and would not have been able to do it without him.
Despite me missing a few Permit «layups», he set up for me early in the day, Bobby remained patient and kept working the flats. I landed my Permit in the early afternoon, what an experience! I’d recommend flats fishing to anyone, beginner or advanced– it was my first time.
I would describe myself as a novice fisherman. I’ve fished but don’t own any gear and don’t know how to tie my own hook. I know many who fish regularly may cringe or applaud my good fortune. I actually hadn’t fished on anything other than the occasional party boat once every two years. over the last 4 years.
In addition to these phenomenal opportunities at the targets we saw a ton of stingrays, lemon sharks, tarpon, barracuda, birds, and a dolphin. Being out and on that flats boat, right on top of the water is a real thrill, especially when a tarpon surfaces right next to the boat, as was the case on my trip.
In addition to being a great guide, I’d describe Captain Bobby as patient, kind, passionate, friendly, and generally knowledgeable about Florida and its waterways. I’d highly recommend his services to anyone looking ftto flats fish in Miami’s Key Biscayne.
